We looked at homes out there but they are a bit out of our range. Seems to be nice so I think you are being sarcastic.

People die in Clifton all the time. Plus, they have shitty restaurants. Stay clear.

Hybla vally is a great community. Cheap housing with upper class Caucasians residents. It's just heavenly.

Personally, I'd avoid the Baileys Crossroads area at all costs. That is unless:

1) You feel you need to have access to a lot of cheap (Undocumented Citizens) labor.

2) You'd like to be close to the Peking Gourmet Inn - and feel that the front bullet-proof glass would somehow make your dining experience safer.

3) You need quick access to Columbia Pike.

4) You need quick access to I-395.

I'd stay away. There was a triple homicide in GF about 10 years ago not to mention a newspaper exectuvie's wife burning her two daughters to death back in the '80s and the kid that killed his family because they rejected his girlfriend. The PD discovered the concealed bodies while the current homeowners were living there.

We have done some research but found this site while performing different google searches. We are not rich and we are not poor but we are educated and make have nice incomes and we are moving to the DC area because we both found great jobs! At this time we don't want to live in DC because the areas that we like is too costly and don't provide enough space for what we need. Fairfax County seems ideal for our needs.

Most of the areas on either side of 123 as it winds from McLean in the east to and then even beyond Fairfax City in the west will have a lot to offer, People at FFXU are probably not the best bunch to seek advice from however. If you wanted to know whether helicopters constantly circle over Centreville or if area contractors make any habit of hiring illegals then killing them and dumping their bodies all over the place in order to avoid paying them, this would be the spot. Otherwise, not so much. Have you tried the NoVa forum at City-Data?

The best areas are: McLean, Great Falls, Vienna, NORTH Reston, Oakton, Clifton, and specific parts of Alexandria. Anywhere else is a roll of the dice.

Hate to seem nosey but you left out some critical details. You talked about how pricey Great Falls was, but most of the really good neighborhoods such as McLean, Vienna, Oakton, Clifton, Mantua, Fairfax Station and the better parts of Alexandria and Arlington are going to run well above half a million dollars. If you are looking to spend $400-600k they may be too expensive for you. Parts of Alexandria and Arlington are nice if you don't have kids, but may not work out as well if you do. There are decent neighborhoods in counties west or south that may be a little more affordable and family friendly, but the tradeoff is a longer and more expensive commute.

Depending on your budget, Arlington County 22204 in the south. Or 22207 in the north.

The homes that we liked in Mclean and Great Falls were overpriced to us. There are affordable homes in those areas but not the homes we need or want.

Burke or Fairfax (county section south of George Mason Univ.) is still a pretty good choice. Good range of prices (cheapest prices get you more of what you hope to avoid though).
