Was just there for a work going-away party. Mediocre at best.

Yeah, de gustibus non disputandum, but I've tried them several times over the years and always said "meh". Disappointing. Not terrible, but I like Uncle Julio's better, meself.

That sucks. When it first opened as a small family run restaurant the food was great. I guess once they expanded I noticed things were starting to go downhill, just did not know it has gotten that bad. The "great migration west of 28" drove another business to cut corners, skimp on quality and lose sight of their brand.

A half-dozen years ago, it was good. But, I've noticed the same thing. Not sure if they just started using cheaper ingredients or hired some mediocre cooks.

Admittedly I only tried it once, but I'd third the lackluster sentiment. Cold beans, congealed cheese, tough protein. El Fresco is less than a mile away on the same side of 50 and is a better option, and their food is lacking seasoning.

Picante has good salsa and giant quesadillas. Other than that, they are a waste. El Fresco has good food, but lacks flavor on just about everything except their breakfast items.

I also agree that El Paso is good. They have a location at Fairfax Circle too.

Is Tequila Grande (near the Vienna Metro) still open? That place was pretty good a few years ago.

Tequila Grande is still there. I haven't been there in years but I thought it was good the last time I went.

In another recent post, someone said the El Paso in Fairfax Circle is closing.

Anyway, if your relatives have ever lived in the southwest, don't bother trying to take them our for tex-mex anywhere. Even the best places here are just mediocre.

If your relatives like live cockroaches and rats scurrying under tables, Anita's is the place to go. They've really upped the ante on authenticity since Anita passed away.

I've been to several Anitas locations (Herndon, Vienna, Ashburn, Leesburg) and never seen anything like that.

Did they fire you or something?

I miss their original chicken tortilla soup. It was not even on the menu, but you could order it. Before they closed down the Fairfax store they had modified the soup recipe and it no longer rocked. Their salsa was rather good.

Speaking of rock, most of their employees seemed to be of the "Goth" variety for a while there. Not sure what was going on.

Coyote Grill just up the street in Fairfax City is awesome! You could call it gourmet Mexican. Cowboy salad with steak is great. Salsa is the best I have tasted.

I knew a couple cooks at Carlos O'Kelly's back in the day - fun dudes to party with!

I've eaten at Coyote Grill a few times and was always impressed, never a disappointment.

Give one of the old cooks a call and see if they have the recipe for their original tortilla soup. Post it here for all to enjoy.

Forgot about this one...agree that it's excellent. As an added bonus, they also have huge margaritas/sangrias that are delicious.

Tequila Grande is solid. If you're looking for ambiance, go somewhere else. But I've gotta say that the food is pretty good and if nothing else, they've got the best burrito ever: the Burrito Gordo. This thing is HUGE and is tasty as hell!

Take them to the nearest Taco Bell and get a pic so we can see the look on their faces when you tell them this is the best Mexican food in Fairfax.
