Good Places To Walk?
Posted by: Gentleman ()
Date: May 24, 2012 11:40AM

I've been walking at various high school tracks for the past couple of months. Unfortunately, the temperature is starting to rise and I can't really handle walking outside when it gets too hot. So my question is are there any indoor tracks in the Fairfax area? Or any indoor areas to walk that would be open to the public. I wouldn't be able to walk until after 4PM. I've looked into gym memberships but they're quite expensive. I've thought about mall-walking but there are too many people during the evenings and I wouldn't be able to do mornings. Thank you!

I know you addressed Mall Walking already but you should try Potomac Mills - it's never crowded and it's a really long walk from one end to the other.

Thanks for the quick reply. I would consider mall-walking if there's no other option. Potomac Mills is aboout 20 miles from my place. I would like something a little closer but I'll definitely consider it. I live closer to Fair Oaks Mall but it gets really crowded. I've never really surveyed Potomac Mills but I'll head down there to check it out. Thanks! Any other suggestions would be great.

Take a long walk off a short pier. You won't get hot.

wow, how old are you? 80? seriously, what a fucking pussy. and how is walking at length on a hard tiled floor of a mall appealing to anyone? use the indoor track in the field house at gmu, though i doubt you'd find any other old fogies there who you could socialize with.

You could also walk Reagan National from New(er) end to the Original end. Its sort of like a time warp.

The New terminal was completed in the late 90's and the oldest part the 50's???

How about walking to Potomac Mills then!? 20 miles sound like a good walking plan...

Does Udvar Hazy charge for riding a bicycle in? Or have a place to keep bikes? I was thinking of parking over near Dulles Discovery and riding over the 28 bridge.

Do you need a student I'd to walk the gum indoor track? Pay a fee? Tia.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Yes, I am an older man, although not 80 yet. Your suggestion of the Mason Field House is a definite possiblity. Their prices are a bit expensive but it might be better than nothing. Not looking to socialize. Just walk. But thank you for the suggestion.

You can come walk with me. Just kidding.

The Town of Clifton is a lot fun to walk around. Just watch out for Liz Bradsher. She will rob you blind.

Old Town Alexandria. Slight hills and lots to see, plus it is safe.

Loehman's Plaza Bally's has a track on the second floor. You might try walking the trails around Wakefield Recreation Center.

Agreed. Good spots. Burke Lake named one of the top #25 in the nation, even with its only 4.75 mile distance or so.

Burke Lake is prob the best place in Fairfax but you have to watch out for the Lance Armstrong wannabes. They fly down the paths and get pissed if you dont immediately get out of their way. The same douches who ride their bikes in the car lanes of 123 even though an extra wide asphalt path runs alongside 123.

Is Burke Lake Park safe for women (well, insofar as any place is)? Is there enough foot or bike traffic or proximity to others that you don't feel isolated?

Burke Lake is extremely safe. Families, lots of good people. The only police report out of here for a serious crime, turned out to be a false report in the past few years, per my understanding.

Go there all the time, never a problem. The path is about 4.5 miles around. I see plenty of people walking, jogging or riding a bike. I think the riff raff goes elsewhere. The surrounding neighborhood is upper middle class so that helps.
If you are worried take some pepper spray with you.

It's great that this thread has become so popular. But, if possible, I'd like more suggestions for indoor walking areas. All these outdoor walking areas sound great but I really can't handle being outside in 90+ degree weather. Thanks!

Try Wakefield. I think most public gyms' indoor walking tracks just go aroound the multi-purpose courts. Your walk may get disrupted by other sports that are going on at the same time.

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/wp-glance001.htm

Go in the morning.

Use outdoor trails that have a lot of tree cover. For instance, the W&OD's parallel gravel path is heavily shaded between Reston Parkway and Hunter Mill Rd. There are some designated bike trails in the City of Fairfax.

What about the County Government Building?

Its quite large inside, layed out similiar to a high school inside and is a public space.

I bet a few times end to end is 1.5 -2 miles

+1. Those faggot bikers think they own the fucking trail. That and the Koreans from the cult-church across the street.

There always has to be one individual in the crowd to make a person NOT want to follow this site. Your stuck with that mouth and the filth that flows from it, however, I do believe there is always the possibility for change. The one thing you will never ever have any control over is...growing older. You too one day will be that old fart!
