Even cheaper if you hire illegals and then murder them at the end of the job to avoid paying them. Just sayin'.

We were promised a grade-separated intersection. What happened?

Sorry, we needed the money to pay the extremely generous union retirement benefits for vdot employees who put in 10 years' time.

They need to make it an overpass.

This is work that combined with the GMU east/west campus bypass (road under 123 nearing completion that allows access to main campus from west of the 123/Braddock interchange) and the recent widening/improvements at Roanoke River/University mall entrances, will create two left turn lanes in each direction, and hopefully alleviate the backups that occur primarily because of people headed to GMU. As it is, the traffic counts at the intersection rank it 178th in the county in traffic and congestion, so its the peak demand traffic to GMU at patriot center events and GMU arrivals/departures that create episodic jams. Otherwise, there is no need to build a $225 Million overpass when there are 177 intersections in the county (plus I-66) that are better uses of taxpayer funds.

The problem with this thinking is that we build something to be "adequate" for today and then it becomes obsolete before its expected time.

Used to be a time when we over-engineered for the future. Saves money in the long run and serves for many, many years. Think I-295 around the East side of Richmond, Dulles Airport in the 1970s, the first thirty years of the beltway, the high schools of the 1960s. Some called them "white elephants" at the time, but the projects outlived many of the naysayers.

Good enough isn't.
