At about 5:30 a.m., detectives from the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office, assisting a Virginia State Police narcotics task force, arrested Lafonzo French, 40, after an investigation in the 5600 block of Beach Road near Casanova.
Sheriff's deputies had custody of French when he escaped his restraints, said Lt. James Hartman, spokesman for the sheriff's office.
French is a black man, 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing only white boxers.
He has a lengthy criminal history dating back 20 years. In 1993, he was convicted of shooting into an occupied vehicle, malicious wounding, and the use of a firearm in a felony.
In 2008, French was convicted of felony possession of cocaine.
At 7:45 a.m., sheriff's deputies put out a warning that French was on the loose in the area, cautioning residents to lock their doors and windows until further notice. Police are searching the Casanova area with bloodhounds and a helicopter.
Around 10 a.m., officers carrying assault weapons were seen coming out of the woods near Beach Road.
Deputies set up a staging area at the intersection of Beach Road and Delee Lane, while State Police parked an armored personnel carrier near the 5500 block of Beach.
Deputies are still trying to determine how French got loose, Hartman said.
