Columbia Pike Streetcar - Virginia kicks in $65 Million in Funding

Commonwealth of Virginia is contributing an additional $65 Million in funding for the Columbia Pike Streetcar that will eventually terminate in Bailey's Crossroads.

Good News for the Mason District. The streetcar will ultimately catalyze revitalization in the immediate Bailey's Crossroads area. There is already a project that is in the pipeline: http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/breaking_ground/2014/07/avalonbays-big-plans-for-the-crossroads-of-baileys.html

Full story:

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- A plan to run a streetcar between Fairfax and Arlington counties has received a boost after state officials announced they will increase funding for the project by up to $65 million, even though they say they can't get enough money to expand Medicaid for the Free Shit Army.

Plans for the $333 million project have been questioned in Arlington as cost estimates have risen and critics have derided the streetcar as too expensive and virtually useless with only a fraction of the cost borne by locals who would benefit most. They're also suspicious of applying 19th century solutions to 21st century problems.

Most of the proposed 5-mile line would run in Arlington, connecting Pentagon City to the Skyline section of Fairfax County with no obvious connection to Metro.

On Friday Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne notified the counties that the state will boost its contribution by up to $65 million, meaning the state will pay for nearly half of the project as Arlington blew through its funds constructing several million dollar bus stops.

The funding also accelerates the planned timetable by a year, and the compressed scheduled is alledged to shave $25 million off the project costs.

Its a lot of towel heads out in that area.

Between Ubery, Lyft, and the rail car, they should all be in Mannasas by 2020.

Sounds good, I'm expecting my property value to jump up a nice little bit when this thing gets built.

I don't know who wrote this, but what do they think has a stop in Pentagon City, Jeff and Ahmad's rickshaw service?

Does it make you jealous when those towelheads are richer and more successful than you?

Don't answer because I already know.

I don't work a shit jobs like they do, or live in an ugly garden apartment in one of the worst parts of Fairfax county.

My single family home in Vienna will always be nicer than anything near Baileys, streetcar or not.

Essentially connecting two sets of DoD employees with the second set at the Mark Center. It doesn't really help much unless you live along the line as well as work there.

Bulova and friends are fixated on this. If the House of Delegates wants to help her waste money, they need some coaching. Tell Kaye Kory and the rest of them to knock this off.

So instead of using the phone or possibly video conferencing (that is a bit futuristic for most civies) they can now save money by subsidizing a system no one wanted.

...subsidizing a system no one wanted.

Streetcars are so 1920.....

It will be so much fun to be caught in the traffic jam after the first streetcar accident. Maybe the other streetcars behind the accident will pass them?

Great idea..... the good news is, now Arlington doesn't have to subsidize it alone. Now the rest of the state gets stuck with it.

It should only take about six to eight hours to bring in a crane and flatbed to remove the damaged streetcar and restore service.

Ah but streetcars don't break down. That's why they were abandoned as a form of transportation.

No need to worry, the towel heads and spics will stop any chance of prooprties going up more than 5% after a street car is put in.

Well, I myself and my coworkers are. That's all that matters.

When Juan Gonzalez is trying to purchase a 2 bedroom condo in Baileys for $200k, and the appraisal comes back at $120k, Juan will need to bring an additional $80k to the table. Juan had enough trouble saving 3.5%, ain't no way he is getting that $80k.

I wonder why things are worth so much less around Baileys Crossroads...

Maybe tio, abuela, y primo Miguel can kick in since they all plan on living with him anyhow. At least until his six kids join him after getting clean underwear at the border.

Currently, it will stop at Skyline, not the Mark Center. The Mark Center is in the City of Alexandria, which evidently wants nothing to do with this and is unwilling to participate.

For all of you naysayers out there. The streetcar has been done before in Portland and Seattle and all over Europe in mixed traffic. It works. If some of you homebodies would just get out of the DC area to see what other cities have done, you would realize the amazing potential a streetcar has for this corridor.

The problem in any major transit investment is people who are scared. People scared of change, people who just want to keep with the status-quo. People like driving their cars and usually investment in highways goes without much hostility. Public transit is not as easy, even though transit is sustainable. It has a lot of opponents for various reasons. I am so glad that things are moving along. In the long run the Columbia Pike streetcar will pay for itself time and time again.

Kthxbai.

What works some other place doesn't automatically mean that it works here. Or at what cost which in order to do what's envisioned is far beyond and many times the already very expensive cost of the streetcar project itself.

Oh god, really? We have to hear about "how they do it in Europe" and shit. Fuck them.

And what do you mean by "even though transit is sustainable?" and "in the long run the Columbia Pike streetcar will pay for itself time and time again."

Really? You mean like Metro? Ha!

It's only taxpayer money - what's the problem? As I always say, easy come, easy go! Now STFU and fork over your damn money - you don't expect my beloved illegals to walk from their free luxury housing to the welfare office, do you?
