Nearly 10,000 Lose Unemployment Benefits

Congress may revisit the issue when they return from recess.
http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/nearly-10000-in-virginia-lose-unemployment-benefits-fairfaxcity

While the overall employment picture is good in Northern Virginia, compared to the rest of the country, the Commonwealth saw 9,700 people lose their long-term federal unemployment benefits Saturday, which are the benefits that kick in after Virginia unemployment benefits have expired.

The average weekly unemployment benefits check for Virginia residents is $296.95.

Across the entire country, 1.3 million Americans were expected to immediately lose their long-term federal unemployment insurance coverage Saturday.

Why? Congress passed a budget compromise before Christmas that did not include extending the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program.

"No one got everything they wanted out of this deal," Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said in a statement. "Indeed, I along with many of my colleagues would have preferred to see an extension of long-term unemployment benefits, which has a very direct and significant benefit on more than 1 million families and our national and local economies."

"Every dollar of assistance generates $1.64 in economic activity in the community," he continued. "Sadly, it was not addressed here, but we will continue to push the Speaker to bring it up separately to help those still struggling to find work."

The federal program was started in June of 2008, when Congress approved a 13-week extension. In Virginia, it added on to its 26 weeks of unemployment; the length of time varies by state.

As the recession got worse, Congress passed additional expansions. But those expansions are gone as of Saturday.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates by not renewing the program, the country will see a savings of $25 billion a year.

Now in Virginia, instead of getting 40 weeks of unemployment insurance, Virginians will go back to getting just 26 weeks, unless Congress decides to revisit extending long-term unemployment benefits when they return to Washington this coming Friday.

In Virginia an additional 31,800 people are set to lose their unemployment benefits in the first six months of 2014 when they hit the 26-weeks mark, according to Democrats on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.

President Obama is pushing to renew the program. Gene Sperling, the director of Obama's National Economic Council, said this week, "Never before have we abruptly cut off emergency unemployment insurance when we faced this level of long-term unemployment, and it would be a blow to these families and our economy."

Sperling noted that Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) "have put forward bipartisan legislation to extend emergency unemployment insurance for three months, which would prevent these 1.3 million workers and their families from losing benefits while giving more time for consideration of further extension through 2014, and Leader (Harry) Reid will bring it to a vote as soon as they return."

The unemployment rate for Virginia is currently 5.4 percent. In October in Fairfax County, the rate was 4.1 percent, and in Falls Church, 7.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The U.S. unemployment figure is 7 percent—though some say it's even higher, with some people giving up entirely on getting a job.

If you live in Northern Virginia and have questions about unemployment insurance in Virginia, you can stop by the Virginia Employment Commission at 5520 Cherokee Ave., Alexandria, or call 703-813-1300.

For other assistance, see information here on local food pantries and social services by location in Northern Virginia. You can also call Department of Family Services at 703-324-7500.

What do you think of Congress saving the country around $25 billion a year by cutting off federal long-term unemployment assistance?

Good lord! Oh no! What will the libs do? Dare I say, get a job? Holy shit! What a great idea.
I mean at the most you don't even get $300 a week from unemployment. Why does the government even bother. If somebody can't make more than $300 a week in NOVA they have serious problems and are probably already on disability or medicaid or some other freebie liberal handout.
Fuck them! Work.

Do you think that Downs kid walked into that grocery store, applied for a job, and they hjred him? Not a chance. The taxpayers are paying that grocery store to employ him.

How do you know his mom didnt go in there with him when he applied? Show me where the taxpayers are the ones cutting the kid a check and not the grocery store. Last point which seems lost on you is he is WORKING. The stores always has ads up wanting help. I guess the reason I see all these help wanted signs is I am not sitting at home all day collecting a free check.

How is this off-topic? It clearly mentions the figures for Fairfax County and Falls Church...

"The unemployment rate for Virginia is currently 5.4 percent. In October in Fairfax County, the rate was 4.1 percent, and in Falls Church, 7.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. I imagine his mom did go with him. She also filled out the government program forms.

The government cuts the store a check and the store cuts the kid his paycheck. And there is probably some schnook in the middle taking a cut.

Look, I'm not saying this is a bad program. It's certainly better than paying slugs to do nothing. I'm just saying there's more to it than meets the eye.

I run a small business in the construction industry. I was forced to lay off most of my employees during the downturn several years ago but I have stayed in touch with them. As business has begun to bounce back, I have offered many of them jobs and several (all low skilled laborers) have turned me down because they'd rather stay at home and collect benefits. They have been out of work for over 2 years and are still collecting. I want to hire them back and they won't take it! Crazy system we have. Rewarding people who don't want to work.

Indeed it is a crazy system BUT I can't say I really blame them for taking advantage of it. I'm retired, but if I had a choice between busting my ass for some dude that will dump me again in a heartbeat and a (likely larger) unemployment check for doing nothing, I might go for the unemployment check.

But hey, call 'em now, they might be ready to come back.

I was on unemployment for nearly two months after being employed for seven straight years (right out college) and the check didn't even begin to cover what I was making and I was getting the maximum allowed for VA. Yes, it paid the bills, but left little else for things like gas/metro (which you need to use if you are interviewing at places). The thing about it is that your supposed to be looking for a job while you're getting it and you're supposed to be reporting who you applied to so the VEC can check behind you. I don't know if the ever checked behind me, but I didn't want to be on umeployment forever. Eventually, I got a part time job making a little more than my employment check, but a job nonetheless. I don't have enough to pay rent cause earning a check requires you to wait two weeks, but lucky for me my boyfriend owns a restaurant in DC and has the money for rent. But, I can understand how it is easy to fall into the umemployment trap cause being umeployment is a hit to your self esteem and you carry that into every interview and people don't want to hire a person who is over eager for the job or is unemployed even if at no fault of their own. My new job doesn't pay as much as my old job and is part time, but I use this opportunity to use that time to go back to school to get my MBA. If you are umeployed use the time to get an education to make yourself more desirable to employers and you can use that as a reason for being unemployed instead I fot fired/layed off/whatever. I can't spectulate on why one would choose to remain unemployed cause I don't like to judge, but if you want a job then a job you will get, but you have to LOOK.

Prob not there are inside ways to extend the checks for up to five years.

Just what the world needs another MBA from a no name school. Did you also get a PMP? Did they teach you about spell check in MBA school?

Yeah, it's just awful that you may end up having to work for a living rather than leeching off productive society. What's this country come to?

Yes, that is sad. How can someone get so lazy and just expect to leech? As to criticizing corporations being culprits, that is a farce too. If it were not for corporations, where would most of the higher-paying jobs come from? Not everyone can work for the U.S. Government as a GS-14 or GS-15. It just isn't possible.

America is in vacuum. Yet, it's really starting to suck. The "other" side who doesn't embrace capitalism, yet embraces socialism is most likely curious as to why the supply of higher paying jobs are going away. They think they'll have the cherry-picked dream life with large government control running many facets of their lives. Such delusions they have!

Unlike food stamp and welfare recipients, many unemployed people (all of which previously held jobs) are Republicans. If the news media shows one person saying: that he had always voted Republican but if the House leadership does not allow a vote on extension of unemployment benefits he will never vote for a Republican again, the Republican will cave as 1.3 million voters could be a critical in the next election. The joke used to be that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. The new version will be a Democrat is a Republican who had his unemployment benefits ended. "..It is not just a coincidence that tax cuts for the rich have preceded both the 1929 and 2007 depressions. The Revenue acts of 1926 and 1928 worked exactly as the Republican Congresses that pushed them through promised. The dramatic reductions in taxes on the upper income brackets and estates of the wealthy did indeed result in increased savings and investment. However, overinvestment (by 1929 there were over 600 automobile manufacturing companies in the USA) caused the depression that made the rich, and most everyone else, ultimately much poorer. Since 1969 there has been a tremendous shift in the tax burdens away from the rich and onto the middle class. Corporate income tax receipts, whose incidence falls entirely on the owners of corporations, were 4% of GDP then and are now less than 1%. During that same period, payroll tax rates as percent of GDP have increased dramatically. The overinvestment problem caused by the reduction in taxes on the wealthy is exacerbated by the increased tax burden on the middle class. While overinvestment creates more factories, housing and shopping centers; higher payroll taxes reduces the purchasing power of middle-class consumers.." http://seekingalpha.com/article/1543642

If you were making a good salary when you lost your job, sometimes unemployment is the only option because it will rake you in more cash than say working full time in a supermarket, etc. But yes, anything longer than 3 months is ridiculous.

There are PLENTY of jobs in the DC area. Most of the people on unemployment are simply too lazy to work. Instead of working hard they feel entitled. Welcome to the new generation of lazy-ass Americans.

Welcome to ANTITAX IGNORANCE ON PARADE, 2014 edition. Newsflash. Unless you are an employer yourself, which I very much doubt, then the taxes you pay are not going to cover someone's unemployment taxes. Unemployment benefits in Virginia and most other states are paid out of state and Federal unemployment taxes on employers.

Yep. I heard a story on the news where a woman was out of work for a year and claimed she couldn't get a job anywhere and she's from this area. When questioned about getting a job in fast food, security, data entry, or any other of the other jobs posted on a jobs website, she simply replied that it was easier for her to get unemployment and get cash for babysitting.

Why work when you get a free ride. If the system worked they would get a list of jobs and be sent for an interview. If offered the job they would either take it or not get unemployment and that means any job. Enough of the free loaders being able to pick and choose. If you find a job great, if not then you take what is offered. If you get fired because you are lazy and want to go back on unemployment then the benefits terminate.

Obama has become an enabler where it is not your fault you are shiftless and lazy its because rich people have too much money.

I favor a program under which welfare is eliminated for the able-bodied. In place is a govt jobs-of-last-resort program, doing labor-intensive, meaningful work like picking up trash, mowing grass, etc. for minimum wage, much like the old Civilian Conservation Corps. You don't show up or work hard, you don't get ANYTHING from taxpayers. Participants would be eligible for free training/education classes on weekends ON THEIR OWN TIME if they wish to better themselves and improve their skills for better paying jobs.

Beggars shouldn't be choosers.

Able-bodied? Every Obama supporter has a handicapped parking tag hanging from the rearview mirror of their Cadillac so they can park closer to the casino after trading their EBT cards for cash. The Obama crowd are masters of feigning handicaps and collecting workers' comp. Good luck.
