French Dip Sandwiches

Anyone have recommendations on where to find a restaurant that serves a good French Dip sandwiches?

It seems like not as many places serve them nowadays. I wouldn't even care if it's a chain- TGI Fridays used to have a pretty decent one but they took it off the menu a few years back. Most recent one I had was at Chammps, it was ok but they totally skimped on the broth (which was too salty anyway). It also didn't have cheese on it.

I get the craving for one every now and then and think there must be a hidden gem somewhere around here.

There's a bar on Rue Crescent in Montreal that has a great french dip sandwich. It's called Hurley's.

why thank you, but I'm mainly interested in places that are in Fairfax county, preferably close to Vienna or Falls Church.

Not really sure if any places even serve that around here. All it really is is roast beef on a baguette. It's not Fairfax or even Nova, but Roy's Place in Gaithersburg probably has a good one. It's an all sandwich place that has been around forever. You might want to stop there if you are ever in Gaithersburg. It's not that far from I-270.

Have you tried Santinis? I'm not sure if they have French Dip, but they have some killer other sandwiches. Worth a shot.

The Capitol Hill Club in DC has an outstanding french dip sandwich. It is right across the street from the Capitol South Metro station.

It seems like almost every diner, deli, or chain had one on the menu years ago, shoot, even Arby's used to serve them (with really gross, processed "broth"). It seems like they've been slowly dropping off menus over the past 2 decades. I was disappointed when Fridays got rid of theirs.

thanks for mentioning the Gaitherburg place

There is or use to be a place called Neighbors. It was in the Park Cedar shopping center at Cedar and Park in Vienna. They had a great french dip years ago.

Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon serves a great Beef on Weck sandwich which is delicious with au jus and grated fresh horseradish on the side. This is Buffalo's version of the French Dip, and the "Weck" refers to the Kimmelweck roll, which is a Kaiser-style hard roll dipped in au jus and dusted with caraway seeds and salt. Glory Days also has something similar, but it isn't as good IMO as Jimmy's

Fat Tuesday's in University Mall used to serve one that was quite delish. Sliced prime rib on french bread. Do it right and order extra cheese.

Bungalow in Chantilly has an alright dip on their menu, but no where near as good as could be found at Fats. (They either don't toast the bread or use a hoagie roll vs. french bread.) That being said, they do have a slammin sammich called the "Bungalo Italiano" (or something like that). It is THE BEST sandwich I've ever had in a restaurant. Ever!

Funny that NoVA has become so pretentious that even Reston is considered trash.

Jackson's is pretty good, but for $20, it ain't worth it. There's a pool place in the Herndon Clocktower that has an excellent french dip and good wings.

Best in the area:

1) Any of the La Madeleine restaurants in the area
2) Yves Bistro near the Alexandria AMC Hoffman theater
3) Arby's. I actually like these a lot.

Houlihan's in Herndon, across Elden St. from Worldgate, attached to some hotel. Great French Dip.

Have not got around to trying the Beef on Weck at Jimmy's, but there other stuff is good, so would guess it is as well.

I work near Yves' Bistro in the Hoffman area, will have to give that a try as well.

Get the Prime Rib dip at Red Robin.

Tender prime rib topped with caramelized onions, horseradish sauce and Provolone cheese, on a rustic baguette with au jus for dippin'. Served with a side of coleslaw and Bottomless Steak Fries.

Another vote for Fat Tuesdays at the University Mall next to GMU. Cheap, loaded, delicious, and comes with those fat fries you can sprinkle the cajun seasoning on. Mmm!

Something goes wrong every time I go to Red Robin in 7 Corners.
I've tried about 10 times. Liked RR from the midwest.

Most recent visit a couple weeks ago: hairs fried into my fries.

Not going back...

There is a place right outside the horse tracks in West Virginia, in Charlestown that sells the French dips. I think its one of the best I have every had. Can't remember the name but it has been there for a long time. It's a family oriented restaurant.

Hands down, Jackson's in the Reston town center has the best french dip I have ever had in my life. To be honest they shouldn't even have anything else on their menu it's so damn good. Make sure you get the horseradish sauce on the side and put some on there and prepare for an out of body experience.....
