Make Recycling a Holiday Tradition
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/recycling/holiday.htm

This holiday season, take advantage of several recycling opportunities:

•NEW!! Recycle Cooking Oil: Fairfax County has launched a new pilot program to recycle waste cooking oil at the I-66 Transfer Station. Residents with large quantities of waste cooking oil will be able to recycle it in a specially-marked container located by the motor oil and antifreeze recycling location at the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) during normal operating hours. This program allows for the collection of deep fryer oil, vegetable oil, peanut oil and other oils used to prepare or cook food on a grill, griddle, frying pan, fryer or wok. See additional details online or call 703-324-5230, TTY 711.
•Christmas Tree Recycling: If you receive curbside pickup of trash and recycling, you can recycle your live Christmas tree (less than 8 feet) on your normal collection date. The cost is included as part of your regular, paid collection service. For larger trees, contact your collector for recycling instructions. Christmas trees may also be recycled during the first two weeks in January at either the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex. There is a small processing fee of $2 per tree. Please remove tree stands, ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree toppers before recycling.
•Electronics Recycling: Fairfax County’s electronics recycling program — Electric Sundays — is set to continue in 2014 beginning on Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the I-66 Transfer Station. We will accept televisions, computers and peripheral devices – including keyboards, speakers, printers, external drives and other such materials – and unbroken fluorescent lights. See a schedule of dates and more information.
If you still have questions about any of these recycling opportunities, please call the Solid Waste Management Program at 703-324-5230, TTY 711.

http://www.insidenova.com/news/local/manassas/recycle-that-christmas-tree/article_8bea1f86-6ddc-11e3-9239-0019bb2963f4.html

Don’t throw your holiday greenery to the curb. After all the lights are off and the ornaments are put away, give your Christmas tree, wreath and other cut greenery a fitting final resting place – the recycling.

Be sure to remove all ornaments, decorations, tinsel, nails and the tree stand and take the greenery to one of locations in Prince William County listed below to be recycled:

•The Prince William County Landfill at 14811 Dumfries Road in Manassas, Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. or Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed New Year’s Day.
•The Balls Ford Road Compost Facility at 13000 Balls Ford Road in Manassas. Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed New Year’s Day.
•Leesylvania State Park at 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Drive in Woodbridge (off Neabsco Road). Trees may be dropped off at Shelter 2 and will be used for habitat.
•Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) at 5399 Wellington Branch Road in Gainesville from Dec. 26 to Jan. 13, 2014. The drop off area is in the parking lot in the area outlined with safety cones to the right of the building. For more information contact NOVEC at 703-335-0500 ext. 1633 or 1661, or rightofway@novec.com. NOVEC will deliver the wood-chip mulch to interested customer-owners at no charge. Visit www.novec.com for details.

How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Alexandria
Trees will be picked up curbside for recycling on regular refuse collection days between Jan. 6 and Jan. 17.
http://oldtownalexandria.patch.com/groups/holidays/p/how-to-recycle-your-christmas-tree-in-alexandria

With visions of sugarplums a near distant memory, it's time to put that once grand Christmas tree on the curb.

But that tree can come back as mulch in the spring for Alexandria residents who place their former Christmas trees at the curb on their regular trash day between Monday, Jan. 6 and Friday, Jan. 17.

The city asks that residents please remove any tree stands, lights and decorations from the tree before placing it at the curb.

Trees placed prior to Jan. 6 will be collected as regular refuse.

I heard somewhere that some Christmas trees can be recycled by feeding them to goats. Is this true? (Serious question).

I heard the same thing too. It might have been in Herndon or Sterling.

Herndon has a lot of Hispanics. Given the chance, Hispanics will cook and eat goats. I've seen them buy a live goat and then kill and roast it on a spit in their yard.

News flash: lots of people eat goat, because goat is delicious.

I'm sure it's quite tasty as well. However only hispanics actually buy a live goat and cook it over a fire pit in their yard.

Or they'll eat the tree and cook it with the goat. Either is fine.
