Who Times the Lights in FFX County

A more accurate question would be who is supposed to time them? Doesn't matter if its the Fairfax County Parkway, Springfield, Burke, etc they are completely hosed. Herndon is the post child for this. An ungodly amout of traffic lights in a short span, all out of sync. Half the traffic issues in NOVA could be solved with better F'ing timing.

In fact, when one brings up the topic, the responses are all "but what about traffic the other way?"

Teh stupid, it burns.

VDOT has general responsibility for traffic light timing and phasing. You can reach them with your well-thought out suggestions at 1-800-367-7623.

Other jurisdictions around the world have been able to figure out how to time sets of lights at appropriate speeds. If VDOT is unable to sort out the basics of road signals, well...

Just going by observations but there appears to be two light timings. One during "rush hours" which appears to start around 0600 along Route 1 during weekdays. Rush hour timing tends to prefer to keep traffic moving along Route 1. Outside this range, it appears to be some sort of demand timing. If there is side street traffic waiting, the lights change without regard.

It's very frustrating to drive during non-rush hour timing.

The retards at VDOT. Big surprise. They aren't allowed to hire anyone with an IQ over 80. If you doubt this, just drive on I-66 between the County Parkway and the Beltway sometime. What a mindfuck mess! Guaranteed to generate huge backups day and night, 7 days a week!

The non-rush hour timing is the retarded one. Every fucking cross street goes red as traffic approaches because one car pulls up. Do a hybrid for non-rush hour. The lights stay timed for rush hour and when its cycles around it checks for a car on the senor. No car, don’t switch lights until the next cycle and check again. It will be a long wait from a side street but once you’re on you’re golden.

That still doesn’t address sections like the Burke Lake Road between Lake Braddock High School and Burke Center Parkway or Centreville Road/Elden Street in Herndon. You literally sit as one light watching next cycle towards red as yours finally goes green.

exactly. it's extremely common, during non-rushhour times, to see a 50 car jam generated because one dude is turning off of a side street. it's absolutely fucking insane.
