The NRA is another entity that has changed its stripes, especially since the ascension of the twisted asshat extremist, Wayne LaPierre. The NRA was founded in 1871 (by a journalist and a Union Army General) with a mission of providing training in gun safety and marksmanship. That's all. And that continued to be its principal mission for a century or so. The NRA of the day supported the now-hated Gun Control Act of 1934 and the also now-hated Gun Control Act of 1968. That's George Wallace, the noted reactionary and integration and civil rights hating governor of Alabama who insisted that he be sworn into office while standing on the very spot that Jefferson Davis stood on as he was sworn in as President of the Confederacy. What a nice man. Nixon of course also appealed to dim-bulb honky reactionaries distressed by the Freedom Riders of the early 1960's and vietnam War protesters of later in the decade.
