Otters

I do a lot of hiking along the stream valley's in Fairfax County but have never yet had a confirmed otter sighting. But this morning on the way to work a friend came across a road kill otter on Route 606 (Old Ox Road). Yeah, I know it's in Loudoun. Was curious if anyone spots otter's in Fairfax County and how frequently.

Otters are legal to trap in Virginia but you must have a trapping license.
The raw furs can bring between $25.00 and $70.00 depending on size and
quality. The season ended February 28 but good luck next year and happy
trapping. :)

I saw two otters swimming in Bull Run at Hemlock Overlook Park a few years back. It was the first and last time that I saw any there. They seemed to be playing and chasing each other. They would dive under the water then resurface 40-50 feet away. They got out of the water at one point, ran after each other, then dove back in the water and continued chasing each other until they swam out of my view.

That bridge crossing at Horsepen Run on 606 is turning into a slaughter house for wildlife. Another dead otter this morning. A road kill beaver and muskrat two weeks ago. I don't know what kind of engineering work is going on underneath the bridge but it seems to be re-directing wildlife to cross via the road instead of the river.

I've got a stretch of road like that near my home, regular charnel house. Not two days go by without there being a new deer or raccoon dead along the side - clipped a possum there myself one night. It's so regular the buzzards have taken to hanging out there, just waiting.
