Is there any way to find out more specific details of a sex offense crime?

On the registry, it only has the crime they were charged with- "taking indecent liberties with children". Could this possibly be an overblown case of a 19 year old dating a 17 year old?
The language sounds pretty serious to me, and this man has been allowed around my children, and I see him at their school during functions/dances/PTA- I'd like to make sure he is NOT a danger to my kids or their friends, but I always hear about people getting stuck on the registry for peeing in public or something else undeserving.

What to do? Other than not letting my kids around him, which I've already done.

I don't get it, are you comparing me not allowing my child to go to a persons house that has been convicted of taking indecent liberties with children to keeping them in a bubble? Or just suggesting that I do so?

FYI, consider two kids in high school, one is 17 and the other is 16 (very normal, very typical). The 17 year old turns 18 (birthday). Now, its an 18 year old and 16 year old. It suddenly turns into a crime. A situation like this should not destroy someone for their entire life.

The 18 y.o. needs to keep it in his pants. As the father of a girl, I'd be perfectly willing to destroy his life given the chance and would pursue him to the ends of the Earth to do so.

So you were perfectly ok with him when was still 17 years old.. but suddenly you change your attitude when his birthday comes up?

"taking indecent liberties with children" is not what a 18yo would be charged with for screwing his 17yo girlfriend. In VA its not even a sex offense.

The guy did something that fits this or something worse and had his charge plead down to this -

§ 18.2-370. Taking indecent liberties with children; penalties.

A. Any person 18 years of age or over, who, with lascivious intent, knowingly and intentionally commits any of the following acts with any child under the age of 15 years is guilty of a Class 5 felony:

(1) Expose his or her sexual or genital parts to any child to whom such person is not legally married or propose that any such child expose his or her sexual or genital parts to such person; or

(2) [Repealed.]

(3) Propose that any such child feel or fondle his own sexual or genital parts or the sexual or genital parts of such person or propose that such person feel or fondle the sexual or genital parts of any such child; or

(4) Propose to such child the performance of an act of sexual intercourse or any act constituting an offense under § 18.2-361; or

(5) Entice, allure, persuade, or invite any such child to enter any vehicle, room, house, or other place, for any of the purposes set forth in the preceding subdivisions of this section.

B. Any person 18 years of age or over who, with lascivious intent, knowingly and intentionally receives money, property, or any other remuneration for allowing, encouraging, or enticing any person under the age of 18 years to perform in or be a subject of sexually explicit visual material as defined in § 18.2-374.1 or who knowingly encourages such person to perform in or be a subject of sexually explicit material; shall be guilty of a Class 5 felony.

C. Any person who is convicted of a second or subsequent violation of this section shall be guilty of a Class 4 felony; provided that (i) the offenses were not part of a common act, transaction or scheme; (ii) the accused was at liberty as defined in § 53.1-151 between each conviction; and (iii) it is admitted, or found by the jury or judge before whom the person is tried, that the accused was previously convicted of a violation of this section.

D. Any parent, step-parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent who commits a violation of either this section or clause (v) or (vi) of subsection A of § 18.2-370.1 (i) upon his child, step-child, grandchild, or step-grandchild who is at least 15 but less than 18 years of age is guilty of a Class 5 felony or (ii) upon his child, step-child, grandchild, or step-grandchild less than 15 years of age is guilty of a Class 4 felony.

Yes, report him to the HOA.

I still wouldn't let her play unattended around this man, but honestly yes, it would change if it were the 17/19 situation. If he is a child molester I'd like to contact the school and ask why he is in contact with so many children. He has a teen himself that my daughter likes to invite over, and she has been invited to his house.

Read the code I posted before. If he was convicted of this code section then HE IS A FUCKING CHILD MOLESTER!!!!

If he was 18yo when act was done then he was fucking around with a 14 year old. In my book, that's a child molester.

You're right, that's pretty bad. By my calculations he was 22 when convicted. So I guess I was hopeful that he was just an unfortunate guy, but it appears there is no other explanation than he's a child molester.

That's my point, do you know of any way to find out details, like perhaps whether it was 'consensual' or not? In my opinion, even 14/18 isn't quite right. At any rate he was 22 when convicted so he had to be at least 20/21 at the time.

I know 14 year olds who look and act older than 18 year olds. People develop at different ages, and at different rates.

18 to 14 is wrong, but 45 to 18, Happens all day, every day. Assuming they both are completely consensual. The 45 year old to banging the high school 18 year old seems more fucked up to me.

Adult has sex with someone:
12 and under = rape (felony)
13 or 14 = carnal knowledge (felony)
15 - 17 = contributing to the delinquency of a minor (misdemeanor)

If the adult is in a custodial role then the charge could be custodial indecent liberties which is a felony even if the victim is 15 - 17.

If a juvenile has sex with a juvenile it generally depends on the age difference between the two unless the victim is 12 or under which always equals rape.
