Thoreau Middle Student Dies
Posted by: Elias ()
Date: March 18, 2012 10:03PM

I just got this email from the principal of Thoreau Middle School via Keep in TOuch. This is so vague; wondering if anyone knows the student's grade at the very least?

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students died
unexpectedly this weekend. This is tragic news for all of us, but
especially for the family of the student.

Tomorrow morning, we will be meeting as a faculty to discuss how we will
support students and staff during this difficult period. We will have our
counselors, psychologist and social worker available to support students and
staff during the day. Likewise, we will have additional Student Services
staff at Thoreau tomorrow.

I know tomorrow will be a very sad and difficult day for all of us. Please
let your child know we are here to support him or her during this difficult
time. If you feel your child needs additional support, please let us know
and we will follow up with him or her at school.

Sincerely,

Gregory S. Hood
Principal

A rather poorly written message by a school Principal.

It was a seventh grade student and he committed suicide over the weekend.

I wouldn't ask the family name for privacy reasons, but as the parent of a 7th grader who attended a Thoreau feeder school - if someone knows, can you share the elementary school the student came from?

I'd say the kid's grade is D for dead

A feeder school? They raise kids to be fed to animals? Fairfax really has changed!

Seriously, some of these postings are shameful. I am a parent of a seventh grade son at Thoreau; we are all devastated by this suicide, but that's nothing in comparison in the way his family must.

I agree that the email was vague, but I think that the principal (who is new) wanted to alert the community that there would be issues to deal with at school today. He did not want to give the boy's name or what had happened. I can understand and appreciate that.

What's horrific is that a young boy killed himself. A family and a community of students and faculty are grieving.

This must be a horrible time for the family and for his friends. I truly feel sorry for them. As someone who has... struggled with similar issues, I can understand the anguish they must feel. All the best to them.

I also commiserate with those who have lost loved ones to tragedy.

My hamster died last week under similar circumstances.

He had so much to live for...yet obviously something was missing...

I imagine the parents of the dead middle schooler feel almost as bad as I.

Damn BEH,

That's a bit harsh brother. While I'm all for a fucked up, warped sense of humor, parent's losing a kid is truly a nightmare, regardless of the circumstances. To compare a middle school child killing himself to a hamster's demise, is disgusting. Character does still count in these instances, that all of us could sadly have to endure one day.

Now on another count, I agree that people on put memorials on the Underground, well sucks to be them. That's asking for "it."

I'm usually not a defender of Principals, yeah "leave the kids alone", this appears to be a hasty letter. Probably typed up quick, but considering the circumstances, it might have had to have been in the backpacks in a hurry. Also, this Principal might have felt horrible, considering knowing this young person/family, etc.

Please know I am with all of you in your anger towards the idiots who think it is even remotely an idea, much less a good or funny idea, to put something so callus as what they place on message boards, specifically when it comes to another human being taking or losing their life.

Having stated that, I ask that you gather your emotions and reflect just how sad those who do this are. These people have absolutely no lives whatsoever. Oh they will comeback on here and say they have everything they need, be it wealth, women, status, etc. Well, that may be. However, if you look at who posts such incredible heinous things and how many times they have posted on FFU, then you begin to understand they really are very sad and lonely people. For example, did you know "Pinhead the Cenobite", “BEH”, and “Gonads & Strife” combined have posted over 9,000 times in just over (2) years?

Let me break it down a bit further and afterwards I believe anyone who was as upset by their posts as I was, will begin to feel very sorry for these three.

Here’s what I came up with:

Screen ID -----Date registered-----Posts-----Avg. per/mo

Gonads & Strife-----1/29/2010-----4885-----195

Pinhead the Cenobite 1/9/2011-----3621-----258

BEH--------------12/30/2011-----789-----263

I found that to be very intriguing, and incredibly sad. Then I did some very basic research on “Gonads & Strife” and “Pinhead the Cenobite”. I then began to laugh out loud. And just for kicks I did the same for “Priapus”. I then thought of a man who has LDS (Littledick Syndrome). Why else would he put “Priapus” as an ID?

Anyone who is in their right mind knows if someone is jumping up and down yelling “Look at me, look at me!” has nothing to see. Oh, we all know they THINK they have something of substance, but what they really have is, well, nothing.

Look up “Gonads & Strife” and “Pinhead the Cenobite”. Read how very strange the articles are. It’s actually very scary to know there are (4) very sick people who love posting on here. If it’s not the inordinate number of posts, it’s the Whacko screen names.

This is why I ask those of you who post angry replies their posts stop doing so. I know you are upset and vehemently angry. I am too. Personally I would love the opportunity to meet them if only to say “Hi”. Oh they will come on here and say “I’d meet you anytime and kick blah, blah, blah.” But there really is something very wrong with these people. To date, they have not lived a happy life whatsoever, nor will they; ever.

Just thank whomever you pray to, if you believe in a higher power, that you have someone you love and they in return love you. For these internet idiots have never been loved, nor are they capable of loving another human, not even of the same sex. :-(

Yes, I agree. There should be no mocking of a child's suicide. If the parents do see these comments, how much more will that hurt?

My son is in seventh grade and will go to the funeral. He is sad and questioning why. There are many tears at Thoreau -- kids, teachers, staff, parents. Of course, everyone wonders what they could have done.

If any of you are interested in helping, the family does need help in covering expenses. You can donate to the help the student's family by mailing a check to or dropping off a check at Navy Federal Credit Union, 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180.

Just please think of the family before posting.

Dear Thoreau PTA Board and Friends,

This week has been a very emotional week for students, staff and families. Thoreau is fortunate to have an incredible team of student service professionals to support our children and their teachers through this difficult time.

Many of you have asked how you could help our grieving family. The parents of Dennis have shared that they are in need of financial assistance to help pay for funeral and hospital costs. Our business partner, Navy Federal Credit Union has established a Memorial Fund in his name. Parents and community members wishing to provide financial support may make a donation to the "Dennis Olaneta Saenz Memorial Fund". There are three ways to donate to the fund.

a check made payable to the Dennis Olaneta Saenz Memorial Fund may be dropped
off at Thoreau's main office;

a donation may be deposited to the fund at the NFCU Branch office located at 820 FollinLane, SE, Vienna, VA 22180;

a donation can be mailed directly to NFCU, 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180.

I hope for once this doesn't go where I think it shall. I am very sorry to hear of Danny's life ending, and his parents, and the grief of the community. Anytime a child passes away, regardless of how, it is a tragedy, and I hope some will out of respect withhold deragatory comments. There is nothing, nothing worse than losing a child. And in this manner, its crushing. Please give them some peace, and if you can, make a donation to help them out. They are a family that needs are support, not some dumb politician or someone else who deserves to be torn apart.

I agree to mad Parent. That just recently posted. There is some many suicides and deaths on the rise in fairfax county. This kid at thoreau. The kid from woodson a year or two ago. Fairfax county trys to stay out of the spot light and all and be all mighty. Were spose to be one of the best sçhool systems in the US. I dont see how we will be the more kids kill themselves. Someone really needs to start taking action. And what happen to so called obama's bully plans? To help kids like this thoreau student from beening harrased. This society only cares about themselves. This child had many stresses in life, not just bullying. Sadly, this family fell through the cracks in terms of receiving community support until after the suicide. Three organizations did step up to help with funeral expenses.

This is very sad indeed. Teenage suicide is complex. For people to just blame a suicide on bullying is a knee-jerk reaction and too simple.

Also, why is the boy's name published here? Does he not have a right to privacy? His family? He was only 13, after all. If his family had wanted the name to be published, then they would have done so. To me, it's inappropriate and just serves people's curiosity and no more. If anyone wanted to donate to the fund for the funeral expenses, they could contact the credit union which would have been able to figure out where to direct the funds.

May he rest in peace.

Bullied how and/or why? By whom? Sorry, but the generic 'I was bullied' has become the refuge of a lot of people these days.

Suggestion #1: Pray for and help this family in any way possible as they are in profund grief

#2 That's your right to contact the media if you feel that way. So far, nothing has transpired on that front, so perhaps there's nothing to this story other than the sad death of a young person, while tragic, is not uncommon at this age

#3 Its probably not as black and white as you seem to be accusing the school of blame completely. Is it possible that they were complacent, made mistakes, didn't act, screwed up? Perhaps. But without jumping to conclusions, maybe contacting the media/school officials, other "leaders", instead of just writing on Fairfax U

Well i get that this is a big deal but from experience at thoreau we don't have a bullying problem. I new the poor boy and he wasn't bullied at school. He probably had some other problems outside of school.

P.S. there is no fight club at Thoeau, the media is trying to make something out of nothing.

Do what you love. Know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw it still.

what other information do you have in regards to bullying at this school? Some information as surfaced holding the Administration responsible for neglect despite a bullying problem being reported.
