In my experience looking for a business related job in the NOVA area, I have ran across A LOT of scam companies looking to get me to join their Multi Level Marketing Pyramid scam.

If you are looking for a decent full time job, do not waste your time with these companies.

-Clearmind Events
-Central Payment Solutions
-Impact, Inc
-Intuitive Group
-Primerica

add to the list if you have any to share. educate yourself http://www.quatloos.com/mlm/mlm.htm

Amway - Or, basically any other company that utilizes a "pyramid" scheme.

I have been approached by some of these guys in shopping parking lots around town. I almost feel bad for them. Almost.

Then I think "I must look really gullible, easily approachable, like I need a job, or all of the above". :-(

It wasn't a scam when I was familiar with it. My neighbor made a fortune off of Amway, and we could've made some serious money too, but we simply didn't want to put the effort into it.

TPL, with all due respect, I call bullshit on this one. My family did that fucking program for years when I was growing up. I didn't do shit for them or anyone else that we knew through the program and we knew a lot of people. I met some of the supposed "big players/millionaires" and now that I'm old enough to know better, I realize they were living off of credit and faking it. Your neighbor probably was too. It's all a money shuffling scheme. Try this link if you don't believe me. The stories are all the same.

The only ones that are making money in Amway/Quixtar are the ones at the very top selling the promotional materials and how to books to the new people and wannabe millionaires in the organization.

Whatever happened to the guys who used to sell speakers out of a white van? Anyone remember them? The scam was that they accidentally ordered extras from the factory and would have to eat the cost if they didn't sell them? I was approached by them many times over the years in the early 90's. One guy even told me the speakers were "liquid cooled" so they wouldn't overheat while pumping out all those glorious watts of sound.

i ran into these guys in richmond.

not the same guys, obviously, but the same scam. i was stopped at a light on my way home when a white van pulled up alongside me and the guy offered me a complete 5.1 surround sound install for a hundred and fifty bucks. he said it was a five hundred dollar system, but their original purchaser decided he didn't want them and refused to pay. this was as recently at 2006.

That's actually quite true. I've heard that the Amway higher-ups don't care if their products don't sell. They make a killing selling the motivation books and tapes to those who are trying to sell the Amway crap so much to a point that they don't have to sell any products.

I have never heard of this company, and they may very well have some pretty shady practices, but that last sentence is not unusual for any type of sales/commission type job. Results-based compensation. You can't just screw around with no success for 8 hours a day and get paid - there's Federal Government jobs for that.

Mary Kay is a huge scam. I was "recruited" heavily after I attended a friend's "Make Up Party" , which was cleverly disguised as a fun get-together. Her Sales Manager was also there and got our names and phone numbers. She called me, offered trips, incentives, etc. Ugh. A pyramid scheme, indeed. Google is your friend and there's even an anti-Mary Kay blog that is spot on and details their nefarious ways.

How about Xango or those other companies that have some "miracle" food or drink? Actually, you probably can make money . . . if you can sell a $40 bottle of juice that you could buy in the store for about $10.

Or one of the biggest scams: Prepaid Legal. Individual salespeople can make money by selling those auto-renewing monthly contracts ($25-$40). The scam is what they claim the lawyers provide. For instance: Contract Review. You can't send them a blank contract and ask them to review it prior to your signing; it needs to be filled in. But, hey, once it's filled in and you've signed it, you're likely on the hook and it won't do much good for the Prepaid lawyer (in Virginia, it's out of the Framme Law Firm in Richmond) to tell you you shouldn't have signed it. And what about the 3-day cooling-off period? Prepaid's terms say you may have to wait for up to 3 days (that's working days, not calendar days) for a response/review by a lawyer. In one case, when someone suggested he might take legal action against me, it took 8 calendar days to get a response. (You call on a Wednesday, and the 3-day clock begins running on Thursday. It was, I think, a 3-day weekend. The lawyer calls you back at his/her convenience; if you're not next to your phone, you miss the call, have to call them, and wait for a return call.

Mary Kay isn't a scam, but it is a pushy direct sales business. They count on suckering people into the business with promises of trips, etc. You pay x 100's of $ to get started, another x 100's of $ more for inventory, and they make money.

Now if you really are a sales person, you can make money with it. Six figures and all, but you have to be a pushy salesperson and you have to be able to close deals. Most people can't actually close the deal, whether its selling shit or selling the business to another sucker. But you can make money with it if you can close. Same goes for the other popular home businesses (Party Lite, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, etc)

Most of the suckers end up getting some of their own stuff at a discount for a while and then dropping out and moving on.

Amway and others like them depend on you to go out and sell to
your friends and realtives first. Pretty soon, you run out of
friends and relatives to sell to because they lose interest.
After that, it's up to you to start selling to your co-workers
or going door to door. Good luck.

Last August, I was approached by a couple of guys in a black
van in the parking lot of Bloom at the corner of Jermantown
Road and Rt. 29 so that scam is still around. They didn't like
the way I was looking at them so they took off in a hurry and
were too quick for me to get their liscense number.

My neighbor once got into a mess with a company by assembling
products at home. She worked her ass off and lost money. The
same neighbor then started with another scam by "reading books
at home and reviewing them". Same story, not a dime.

If it sounds too easy it's bullshit. If you want some extra money
get a real part-time job and avoid all the hassles of being
ripped off.

GSI in Woburn, MA is one of these "smart circle" scams - it seems to have evolved or at least transferred some people, as well, starting as Elite Promotions Group in Alabama, moving to Impact Events in Texas, and now GSI in Massachusetts. Kyndl Bickers and Caleb Sims are currently at GSI and have been at Impact Events.

MKR, I have an interview scheduled tomorrow with GSI. Could you tell me more of your experience with them? I got a bad feeling about the company as soon as I got their email, then phone call, then spoke with one of them on the phone who was snippy with me when asking questions about the company because their website and video are truely uninformative. Hope to hear from you. Cheers.

A girlfriend of mine makes LEGIT loot with Mary Kay. She has been doing it for 7 or 8 years as her primary and only job. I didnt believe it but then I saw her tax return when she pitched my wife. 6 figures several times over. Good for her!

I went on an interview years ago with a company that claimed they did sports marketing. Perliminary research turned up nothing to prove otherwise. So I get on the 'interview' and this cocksucker tries to get me to go out with one of his 'executives' to 'visit clients'. I dug for info and they were trying to get me to walk around shopping centers and sell oil discount cards. Laughable. I dont know how the dimwitted make it through life.

Edit: Here it is

I forgot the name of the company (I think it was something like Capitol Marketing) but they work for Quill the office supply company. These people recruit the shadiest people if fairfax it seems. They sell office supplies door to door which basically means you are either getting the cops called on you for soliciting or getting bitched at by business owners all day. My first day was the most surreal experience ever. I walked into their shitty offices located, on rt50 at the Arlington Two building, and saw 2 gangsta niggas, an asian hiptser, a hot ass Russian bitch, a FOB African, 2 white guys (a fat funny one and a Dwight Schrute wannabe douchebag that took his job way to seriously and actually believed in the promised "six figures after your first year"...named Matt that went to Gonzaga) and the boss was this guido from NYC. I quit on the 3rd day......should have got the Russian bitch's number first.

caleb SIMS SCAM. SCAM CALEB SIMS. SIMS SCAM. CALEB SIMS SCAM.

DO NOT WORK WITH SCAM CALEB SIMS. Caleb Sims is highly involved with the Cosmetics division as well. He is a puppet for Scott Williams. Both Scott Williams and Caleb Sims are professional con artists and Caleb is learning from the best. Both Scott Williams and Caleb Sims are extremely narcissistic and compulsive liars. I would like to explicitly state that matter who you are you will be selling make up door to door and to people in parking lots and on the streets for over a year, over 12 hour days and 6 days a week. YOU MAKE LESS THAN 3 DOLLARS A SALE! 90% of everyone you talk to will refuse to even talk to you let alone buy. The makeup is toxic, made in china and contains parabens. DO NOT BUY MAKEOVER ESSENTIALS. DO NOT WORK WITH CALEB SIMS. YOU MAKE LESS THAN 3 dollars a sale! THEY CONTAIN PARABENS and link to cancer. Look this up and research yourself if you do not believe. EVEN IF YOU COMPLETE THE MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM, HE WILL STILL FORCE YOU TO SELL MAKE UP DOOR TO DOOR! Less than 1 percent of the people make it to assistant management and even fewer of those actually get their own office. YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE WINNING THE LOTTERY THAN GETTING RICH AS A MANAGER IN HIS BUISNESS. EVEN MANAGERS WHO MAKE IT SIGN DOCUMENTS GIVING SMART CIRCLE ACCESS TO THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS and FUNDS. THE MONEY IS NOT YOURS. IF YOU TRY TO QUIT THEY TAKE IT. THEY DECIDE WHEN YOU CAN RETIRE and when you have to stop lying to people.
Caleb Sims targets fresh college graduates, young people, or anyone who has not worked for a real reputable company, with real benefits, a 401k, vacation time, etc. HE OFFERS NONE OF THIS. YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR AND SIGN WAVERS AGREEING NOT TO SUE! YOU GIVE UP YOUR RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL! READ THE PAPERWORK HE TRIES TO MAKE YOU SIGN!! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A COMPANY THAT HAS TO DO THIS??? He goes after people who display a weakness, most commonly those who show a LOW SELF ESTEEM. These are the easiest people to exploit. Whether these individuals are unintelligent, have a low confidence or are unable to get another job due to a criminal background, he soon finds out their weakness from the beginning so he can use it to his advantage in the relationship he builds with the individual. Next he will go at great lengths to make the individual feel like they are weak or unable to do anything right. If you are not an owner you are a pawn to him, just another way to make money. He will claim that he does not make any money off of people who work for him in “the field“ and that he could care less about the $50 dollars a day they make him. Caleb Sims will say the true money is in promotions and that he wants to work with people to promote them out so that they can both make money together. This is a bold faced lie. He keeps people in the field as long as he possibly can. EVEN IF YOU COMPLETE THE MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM, HE WILL STILL FORCE YOU TO SELL MAKE UP DOOR TO DOOR UNTIL HE THINKS YOU ARE READY!! HE WILL HAVE HIS ASSISTANT MANAGERS DO ALL THE WORK FOR HIM SO HE LITERALLY DOES NOTHING BUT KEEP THE LIE GOING TO COLLECT MONEY.
He cares more about that $50 dollars a day than he makes off people in the field than he does about the actual person who is making him the money. This is proven easily if someone asks for a day off after a family member dies, or if they are sick. He will be little them and degrade them and call them weak for not working. He will tell them they will never make it. He also keeps people around by encouraging them to go out and spend money on the many "team nights" so that they do not have any money saved they will need to rely on selling more for him.

Almost every person in his offices live packed together in what they call “merch houses” and work together as well. A lot of these people are emotionally unstable individuals who need to be constantly watched and guided, because they are unable to live in society dependently and function normally. Caleb Sims has the “ability” (though moral individuals would call this a lack of conscience) to look these people in the face, smile confidently and lie to them. He dangle’s the carrot” and convinces these unstable people that he is there for them and that he wants to help them go to the next level. His actions are never to help the individual but to benefit himself. He displays numerous anti social personality traits from degrees of grandeur, to narcissism and compulsively lies to everyone in his life. He does not feel bad either. He encourages the members in the office to go out and drink often so they forget about what they are doing with their lives. While Caleb Sims may come off as a genuine person he is not. I have seen him betray and lie to even his closest friends. Anyone educated will easily discover the true nature of his character. Caleb Sims has a very a short temper and is extremely selfish. He does not care about anyone who does not immediately is making him money by selling make up products for his business. This is not just my opinion; everything I have said is undeniable and very easily provable. He will hire anyone to sell make up for him; whether they have a criminal background, are convicted felons or sex offenders. There is no background check what so ever you don't even have to be a legal citizen. It is a 100% undisputed and undeniable fact that convicted violent felons work in his offices. I will admit that these are not most of the people who work in his office. Most of the people are good people. Caleb Sims has mastered a way to keep people working in his business. It is not as complicated as you might think and I will explain how the business works as I myself made it as an "owner.” No I did not quit because I was weak or could not do it, and I was not fired either. I quit because I was not proud of myself as an individual with the work I was doing. Nothing about lying to people is fulfilling, and you cannot put a price tag on your morality and sanity. There is literally no way a good person can be good at that business. It is impossible to sell the makeup products without lying to people, and it is impossible to bring people in to work in the business without lying to people. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT WANT THE CHEAP MAKE UP FROM CHINA. They will tell you this is part of sales and it is a numbers game and that you are weak for not playing your “Law of averages” and finding buyers and that you don’t know how to hunt and take no’s. The truth is that if you are able to sell the makeup successfully, despite its obvious negatives, YOU ARE SO MUCH MORE VALUABLE WORKING A REAL SALES JOB WITH A BASE SALARY, COMPANY BENEFITS AND WORK FOR REAL CLIENTS AND WITH REAL PEOPLE WHO SEEK YOUR SERVICES, NOT ATTEMPTING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE TO BUY CHEAP CANCER CAUSING MAKE UP. AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO LIE AND HURT PEOPLE IN THE PROCESS.

Looks like the Intuitive Group has been closed since September '13.

The owner, Matt Sileno, did make an attempt at crowdfunding his "dream" of having his own BBQ restaurant......

I recently left my position as President/CEO of a sales and marketing firm because It was not fulfilling and something was missing. I soon realized that what was missing was the fact that I had not been going after my dream! This start up capital will help me get the restaurant going with all of the basic necessities needed. It would be great to share this journey with any of you who find it in your hearts to help fund my passion.

What about Primerica is a scam? I know little about them, but thought they were a legit financial services company (as much as any financial services company can be legit these days...)
