Report: Silver Line Clears Safety Hurdle, Test Likely for Weekend of Jan. 25
Software glitch involving Automatic Train Control system resolved, MWAA to begin testing.

While an opening date still has not been set, the Metrorail Silver Line is progressing towards full service.

According to NBC Washington, the line "cleared a major safety glitch" with the Automatic Train Control system, which was cited in December as a reason for a delay past a February opening date, which itself was a delay from the originally forecasted December 2013 opening.

Per NBC Washington:

"At a meeting of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board Wednesday, [ Jan. 15,] project leaders said a software glitch with the line's automatic control system has been fixed.

"I can report today that our most recent testing of the automatic train control system was successful," said Airports Authority Chief Jack Potter."

At their meeting Wednesday, MWAA also announced that there will be testing along the Silver Line to simulate regular service.

Per the Washington Post, "Potter said officials will conduct a “simulated service” exercise in which Silver Line trains will run at the same time weekend Metro service is being run. The test will likely be run the weekend of Jan. 25."

Once construction of Phase One is complete, MWAA will hand the system over to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, who will conduct their own safety testing, which is expected to last about 90 days.

The 11.5-mile Silver Line Phase One branches off from the Orange Line in Falls Church, and includes four stops in Tysons Corner before terminating at Wiehle Avenue.

Phase Two, which will include stops near Reston Town Center, Herndon, Sterling, Dulles Airport and Ashburn, is expected to be complete by 2018.

MWAA recently set up a question line for residents interested in Phase Two information.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has resolved a computer software glitch on the Silver Line.

MWAA Sets Up Silver Line Phase 2 Hotline for Question, Concerns

With work under way on the extension of rail to Ashburn, residents have access to project staff.

While it may lack the tech-savvy of modern forms of communication, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has launched a hotline for anyone who may have a question about Metro’s Silver Line Phase 2 project. A toll-free phone line has been set up at 1-844-385-RAIL (7245).

MWAA has been tasked with overseeing construction of the entire Silver Line project; Phase 2 will extend the project’s first phase from Wiehle Avenue in Reston through Dulles International Airport and on to Ashburn. The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, the part of MWAA created to oversee the project, established the hotline.

Contracts were signed with Capital Rail Constructors last year and preliminary work has begun. Residents should start seeing more activity in the coming months as the five-year project gets underway. Residents may also have general questions about the project or concerns about work they are seeing.

The hotline will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An operator will answer the call, take a message and pass it along to the construction communications manager and certain staff members with the contractor. The communications manager will investigate the issue and respond.

The hotline is NOT an emergency line and should not be used as such. For emergencies, dial 911.

If the test is successful on Jan. 25th and the WMATA handover happens the following Monday, it won't be operational until mid-May. Assuming all WMATA testing goes smoothly.

Funny how they can't do it this weekend. I guess all the workers need the holiday weekend off.

All Metro employees are black, they can't work King Day weekend. That's like making whites work July 4th.

that's funny, I know some other people worried that they'll be overwhelmed by inner-city poor folk taking the metro and wreaking havoc and crime upon the neighborhoods around the new Metro. I don't buy it. There is no notably higher crime around Vienna or other stations on the Orange line. Besides, DC is far less poor now than it used to be.

Mark Rcca isn't really providing a good observation. According to the census data posted, Washington, DC has 18.5% of the population that lives below the poverty level. This is in comparison to 14.9% as an average for the U.S.

I have a feeling that the crime will be pretty rampant in the Tyson's area when the metro finally opens up.
