Why Is There No Sheriff of The City of Fairfax

Is there a Sheriff of the City of Fairfax? I have never heard of one. and thats odd, Falls Church City has a Sheriff, Many other small cities in Va also do such as The City of Fredericksburg Va. Richmond Va has a Sheriff.

Whats up with this anyone know??

I do know that the schools have a odd relationship with FXCO, The city owns the schools and the County staffs them, but the Citry has its own Fire Dept and Police Dept

Anybody need a job? Andy..Barney..

The City has its own police department and the Fairfax County Sheriff has jurisdiction in the City of Fairfax as well. That's how they chose to handle it.

The city charter then must provide for this and understanding some of the deals between the City and County back in the early 60's ie: schools, water, sewer it makes sense.

Every County in the Commonwealth is required to have a Sheriff. It's been in the state constitution since the 1700's. A city that is in a county may choose to elect a sheriff and if they chose not to, the sheriff of the county that surrounds it will have jurisdiction. Some of the examples that you mentioned are sandwiched between two or more counties. I'm not sure if that plays in to it....

A sheriff is a state constitutional officer elected by the people

but > A city that is in a county may choose to elect a sheriff and if they chose not to,

Who is it that 'may choose' to elect a sheriff or not or as said Is it part of the City Charter that this is the way it is.

The Virginia Constitution allows that an incorporated city may share any of the officers required by the constitution, including sheriff, with an adjacent government. The city chose to share the Fairfax County sheriff and pay a contract fee to the county. I do not know the reason that the founders of the city chose to do that but it would seem that it was financial. They do not have to provide court security or serve civil process and most importantly they do not have to run and maintain a jail which is extremely expensive.

Remember that Fairfax City also chose to share school operations with the County as well. Given how closely tied the City and County are, I do sometimes wonder why the City chose to separate from the County in the early 1960s.

I think its good there's not another elected asshole around. The county one is just fine, and as the previous poster said, its all about agreements, ie. Falls Church Sheriffs.

Article 7, Section 4 of the Virginia constitution provides, "There shall be elected by the qualified voters of each county and city a treasurer, a sheriff, an attorney for the Commonwealth, a clerk, who shall be clerk of the court in the office of which deeds are recorded, and a commissioner of revenue."

As a practical matter, the City of Fairfax does not have a Circuit Court or a Jail so there is no real need for a Sheriff's office. Contacting out these duties to the county is smart.

A City of Fairfax anyway? Other then to F up things with the name Fairfax and City, and thats where Fairfax Co needs to be, a City with a elected mayor who is in charge.. All the shit you read here on FXU about the county..Thats because no ones in charge but the heads of each agency. The B.O.S quibbles about everything and thats why things dont get done. The Chair of the board is at large sets the agenda and thats it. Every year FXCO sends millions to Richmond lost because Cities can keep more revenue then Counties. FX Co should become a city with any name at all. Then annex and suck up the City of Fx and rename Fx Co , City of Fairfax or Fairfax City. Population 1150000. One of the largest cities in the US.

Shit or Get off the Pot and stop bitchen about the County, the schools, the police or anything else.

The city chooses to contract some services but also provides many of its own. Frankly it's the best of both worlds with good services provided by the City (police, fire, public works and parks services) but contracts with the county for others generally based on a population formula (i.e. schools). Seems like a model of efficiency to me.
