Protective order in Fairfax advice

Are there procedures for getting a court order to stop a relative from contacting you. Said relative is a drunkard and constantly burns up my phone with messages and texts. Objective is to bum money which isn't going to happen, I refuse to enable a drunken pill head. I have changed my number but said relative gets it from other sources and the calls begin all over. I try to ignore them but relative comes up with messages indicating someone we both know is in the hospital or in some kind of danger. When I check it is just a ploy to get me to call.

I know I cannot get a regular protective order like for stalking as I am not in fear for my life or safety, I just want to be left alone.

The easiest way for now is to block the number, or have it blocked. Then, seek out the protective order.

Blocking his number is going to be far easier than seeking relief through the courts. Plus restraining orders are only effective if the person is willing to respect them or if you are willing to seek enforcement and get a judge willing to slam the person for violating the order.

Protective orders are only issued in husband/ wife type situations or
co- habatational situations

That used to be the case but the law has changed in the last 2 years. Any citizen can get a P. O against any other citizen, regardless of relation. Getting a P. O. is a very tough thing to do. The courts will want a damn good reason seeing as how when you're the person it's against, you can't possess a firearm. They don't give them out for stupid shit like annoying phone calls. You have a responsibility so protect yourself before the law gets involved. Block their number and tell the person to stop; and then press charges if they continue. If you're not willing to press charges then live w/it because you're not serious about making it stop.

I stand corrected never could figure out why the old law was written to only include domestic/living together relationships. Like you say you must fear for safety to get one now. Easier to get criminal warrant.

Get Caller ID and let it ring ring ring ring. Unless he's coming to your house and threatening you, I dont see how you would get a PO.

Stop being a bitch. Contact said relative and tell them you aren't going to give them any money no matter what. Be firm.

Law enforcement has better things to do than play mommy.
