Mike Shanahan was reportedly ready to quit because of Daniel Snyder’s favoritism of Robert Griffin III

The Washington Redskins are an absolute mess right now, with every day bringing a leaked story of discontent to top the previous one.

Here's a pretty wild one: Coach Mike Shanahan reportedly had cleaned out his office before last season's wild-card game against Seattle because he was ready to quit as soon as the season ended. Why was Shanahan ready to go? Because of owner Daniel Snyder's coddling of quarterback Robert Griffin III.

That report comes from ESPN.com. A team spokesman in the story is quoted as saying the report is "ridiculous." Shanahan declined comment when asked by ESPN. ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen discussed the report on the network's pregame show and didn't mention the caveat that the Redskins said it was ridiculous, via Pro Football Talk.


The story says the only reason Shanahan didn't quit is because Griffin hurt his knee in that game, and it would have looked like he was quitting because of the injury. So he stuck around. With the Redskins at 3-9, if this report is accurate, Shanahan is probably regretting that choice.

The report said Snyder's favoritism toward Griffin helped the quarterback feel "bigger than the team," and that Shanahan didn't feel that was conducive to winning. The story said Snyder sent his security team out with Griffin and would send his personal driver to pick up Griffin's then-fiancee and current wife at road games, as examples of Snyder's behavior toward Griffin.

Whether you believe all the details of ESPN's story or not, the fact is that the Redskins drama keeps getting worse and worse. There have been many stories about the relationship between Shanahan and Griffin, the relationship between Griffin and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, and now a story on a rift with Shanahan and Snyder.

Does anyone get along in Washington?

It appears there's a good chance that the entire mess leads to some offseason changes. And we know the quarterback and the owner aren't going anywhere.

Mr. Snyder is going to fire coach Shannahan after the game. He is going to appoint me an interm coach. Hope he follows my suggestion to rename the team to the Washington Robert Griffens.

No, it is going to take several years of an excellent general manager (i.e., not George Allen) who has complete control. Seattle is good because they hit on almost all their draft picks in the last five years. Thinking that a high-profile coach will turn this team around is the Snyder way. How has that worked out?

First, Snyder tried to wring 2 mil out of Jim Zorn by getting him to quit. If you look at Snyder's history, he won't just hand next year's paycheck to Shanahan. He will spend the rest of the season trying to get Shanahan to quit. Remember the Bingo Caller? Don't be surprised if Snyder does hire RGIII's dad as assistant OC.

The story that Snyder is giving special favors to RGIII falls within the Snyder Starfucker storyline. Snyder needs to use Robert Kraft as a role model, not Jerry Jones.
