Bank Robbery Suspect Killed During Confrontation
A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed during a confrontation with police on Wednesday, December 10. Officers were initially called to the BB&T Bank, located at 6220 Old Dominion Drive in Mclean, at 11:21 a.m. for a reported bank robbery.

Responding officers were alerted to a crash at Old Dominion Drive and Valley Wood Road. A man matching the description of the bank robbery suspect fled the crash site on foot. Officers confronted that man in the 5300 block of North 36th Street, just over the Arlington County line. The suspect produced a handgun and failed to obey the officers’ commands. Three officers fired at the suspect, striking him in the upper body. He died at the scene.

Bank robbery has been a very stupid and risky and desperate thing for a long time. It is only happening more in the last 2 years because the economy really is in the toilet, and the people at the bottom of the barrel are getting more desperate.

Remember how in the recession during 91/92, how Vienna had all kinds of gas station robberies?

I forget the exact statistics, but when I was a bank teller, the secret service came and told us that we should never hesitate to hand over money to bank robbers, because the arrest rate was something like 85% or even 90 or 95% and the conviction rate was close to 90%, so it wasn't worth risking our lives.

Even if I'm a little off on the statistics, Bank robbery is a stupid idea. Banks have video cameras, and people trained to make ID of suspicious patrons, and we had bait money that triggered the alarms, and toe-kick alarm triggers, and discrete buttons under desks and even key strokes on our keyboards that could trigger the alarms, and high-quality color still cameras (for some reason, they always show the B&W video footage and never release the Kodak camera's high quality stills, I guess those only appear in court or something)

Bank robbers have very little chance of avoiding capture and conviction.

Actually, the number is less. 59% of bank robberies were solved in 2006. They make is sound like more because around 85% end up in jail, because they were caught for something else. Bank robberies are solved more than just about any other crime though.

Still a stupid crime. MAYBE get a couple of grand, guaranteed to get at least the next few years in prison.

Looks like the cops didnt waste any ammo. Good shooting! Obviously
effective training. No costly incarceration or trial. No future
robberies for this a$$hole either. My thanks to the FCPD!

59% of bank robberies are solved - I can believe that stat. But if you look at the actual circumstances the majority of the bank robberies are solved after the criminal robs his second, third, fourth etc bank.

I am not encouraging anything, but if you rob one bank with a well executed plan and never do it again - the odds of not getting caught are in your favor.

If you pull a gun on a cop, that's almost a guaranteed "suicide by cop" sentence.

Police put their lives on the line every day and regularly see horrific things you and I will never see in our entire lifetimes. For an officer to hesitate just a couple seconds can make the difference between being shot or shooting an assailant.

There is much wisdom to the old adage, I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

But how often is ONCE enough for a bank robber - or any thief?

"MCLEAN, Va. - Police say the person who robbed a McLean bank on Wednesday was a teenager from Arlington.

Investigators say the 19-year-old suspect, Hailu Brook, went to Yorktown High School.

Police say that around noon on Wednesday, Fairfax Police were called to the BB&T Bank on Old Dominion Drive in McLean for a bank robbery. Officers were alerted to a crash at Old Dominion Drive and Valley Wood Road, not far away in Arlington. According to police, the suspect ran from the scene when police caught up with him, and when he showed a gun, officers opened fire, killing him."

Why is a 19 year old still in high school??
