Woman Dies in Chantilly area Crash

Sully Police District – Fairfax County Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on Route 50 near Sullyfield Circle at around 2 a.m. Friday, October 4.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 39-year-old woman was driving eastbound on Route 50 in the center lane when she lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway to the right and struck a pole. The driver, Erika Alvarado of Lufthansa Circle, Chantilly was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, a 29-year-old man, was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and is in stable condition.

There were no other vehicles involved.

Preliminary investigation reveals that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

The crash is under investigation by Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives. I wonder if she wasn't wearing a seat belt? I thought most of those light poles were made of a cement based product and designed to snap off if hit. If it was a power pole, then it could have been constructed of a thicker aluminum casting, which wouldn't break as readily.
