Why are there no Burger Kings around here?
Posted by: Bounce House ()
Date: December 09, 2008 05:03PM

I live in Vienna and work in Tysons and there are at least a half dozen McDonalds near work or home, but no BK anywhere. Not even in the malls. None in surrounding Oakton, McLean, or Merrifield either. The one in Falls Church is practically in Arlington. Any reason for this? I WANT MY WHOPPER!

Reston and Herndon have them aplenty. I've noticed that the patty is much smaller on the whopper jr. ($1) than it used to be. I was normally the size of the bun, now it's this shriveled up thin hockey puck size.

And Mcd's just got rid of most of their dollar menu - including the double cheeseburger!

Most Mcd's are franchised. And the cost to franchise a Mcd's is not far off the cost to franchise a BK. Since Mcd's has all the advertising around it and other support - potential franchisees may see Mcd's as a better bet.

The management of Mcd's has remained fairly steady over the years, while Burger King, based in Jacksonville, FL, has had some up and downs and has been sold a few times.

Interestingly enough, Mcd's who is a true believer in operations research for the physical distribution and logistics of its inventory (did you know Mcd's sells over 300 different items?), spent millions in the 1960s and 70s researching the best spots to put their company owned restaurants. While Burger King basically put many of their company owned restaurants accross the street from a Mcd's.

There's one off Burke center near the wal mart. No drive thru though.

I also wish we had jack in the box around here, 2 tacos for 99 cents. Hard to go wrong.

Yep, I used to live by that area. Often went to Jack in the Box during the summer days. Wonder if these Jack in the Box franchises will make a come back and compete with Taco Bell? Hmm come to think of it, not very many Taco Bells around here either.

Jack in The boxes are still around on the west coast, just not here.

Or you could open one, seems they're looking for new franchise owners.

Jack in the Box, Carl’s Jr, Horton’s, Del Taco, and Hardees will not open restaurants in regions where they don't advertise on TV. Unless they have some saturation in the market already, for logistical efficiency and TV advertising efficiency, you won’t get a franchise.

And before someone jumps in and says, "well there is a Hardees in ...," those stand alones were grandfathered years ago when consolodation in the fast food business was happening.

Remember Gino's Roy Rogers, Red Barn, Burger Chef? All pretty much gone do to consolidation of the industry.

***Best Barbeque Sauce = Popeye's.

So good, they even charge you for it if you want an extra one (for 20 cents).

***Best fast food meal for late night after partying = Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell.

Tastes much better with exactly 8 packets of hot (not fire) sauce.

Screw Burger King, why aren't there more Roy Rogers!

I am also bummed about the dollar menu going away at McD's. It was so nice to get a coke, small fry and double cheeseburger for $3. You can't beat that.

I did hear on the Junky that if you write WJFK on something then you can get a sub and coke at Subway for a $1.99.

LOL, an ex-girlfriend got me started on this best deal stuff, I still get a call from her every now and then telling me "X has some a great deal on X for a dollar" or today you can get a free "X at X."

I enjoyed the "free surplee poster" who went to a ton of different 7-Eleven's on 7-11 and reported back about his findings.

I don't get the appeal of Burger King. It's nice that they have onion rings, but their fries are shitty and every one that I have gone to has mustard that tastes like it has been watered down with pickle juice (an old fast food cost-saving trick). I would take a Big Mac, Quarter Pounder or Wendy's burger over a Whopper any day.

Actually, a Canadian company purchased most Roy's and converted them to Hardee's. The Hardee's were unsucessfull and most were later sold to MCd's

I remember Ginos and Burger Chef from (eg. Annandale in) the 60s/70s,
and Red Barn (Annandale Road near Route 50).

I think there are still Roy Rogers up north (eg. NJ, MA).
Until a few years ago they dominated the Route 95 plazas.
(Someone above has said that they were bought out by McDonalds,
which accounts for all the McDs at the rest stops now I guess.)

There are a lot of Sonics in the Newport News / Norfolk / VA Beach area.

Perhaps it's only missing from some stores?

I thought the Hardee's were all bought by Carl's Jr.

If you have to eat shitty fast food from a big chain, Wendy's is the best of the worst. Actually, I think their burgers are pretty good. The chain has been pretty directionless, though, since Dave Thomas had his heart attack (like nobody saw that one coming). Unfortunately with specialty chains like Five Guys gaining traction, I think Wendy's is going to got he way of Roy Rogers eventually.

Jack-in-the-Box tacos are the bomb. If you are from Ethiopia.

Awrgh.

They're almost as awful as the ones from Del Taco. Now how many of you FXU posters can say you have eaten (and eaten is a relative term in this context) at a Del Taco?

Actually, if you're going to argue the burger fast food card, I think that Hardees/Carls Jr has them all beat. Their burgers are more expensive, but they usually taste a hell of a lot better.

Unfortunately, the nearest one is all the way down in Stafford.
