Fast-Food Workers In 100 Cities To Walk Off The Job
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/02/fast-food-workers-strikes_n_4372384.html

NEW YORK (AP) — Fast-food workers in about 100 cities will walk off the job on Thursday, organizers say, which would mark the largest effort yet in a push for higher pay.

Go here to watch the news video:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/02/fast-food-workers-strikes_n_4372384.html#slide=1822577

The actions are intended to build on a campaign that began about a year ago to call attention to the difficulties of living on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, or about $15,000 a year for a full-time employee.

The protests are part of a movement by labor unions, Democrats and other worker advocacy groups to raise pay in low-wage sectors. Last month, President Barack Obama said he would back a Senate measure to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

Protesters are calling for $15 an hour, although many see the figure as a rallying point rather than a near-term possibility.

It's not clear how large the turnout will be at any given location, or whether the walkouts will be enough to disrupt operations. Similar actions this summer had varying results, with some restaurants unable to serve customers and others seemingly unaffected.

The National Restaurant Association, an industry lobbying group, called the demonstrations a "campaign engineered by national labor groups," and said the vast majority of participants were union protesters rather than workers.

The group added that past demonstrations "have fallen well short of their purported numbers."

Kendall Fells, a New York City-based organizer for Fast Food Forward, said demonstrations are planned for 100 cities, in addition to the 100 cities where workers will strike. He said plans started coming together shortly after the one-day actions in about 60 cities this summer.

"They understand they're not going to win from a one-day strike," Fells said of workers.

Still, organizers face an uphill battle in reshaping an industry that competes aggressively on low prices, a practice that has intensified as companies including McDonald's Corp., Burger King Worldwide Inc. and Yum Brands Inc., which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, face growing competition and slow growth in the weak economy.

Fast-food workers are also seen as difficult to unionize, given the industry's high turnover rates. But the Service Employees International Union, which represents more than 2 million workers in health care, janitorial and other industries, has been providing organizational and financial support to the push for higher pay over the past year.

Berlin Rosen, a political consulting and public relations firm based in New York City, has also been coordinating communications efforts and helping organizers connect with media outlets.

In the meantime, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has promised a vote on the wage hike by the end of the year. But the measure is not expected to gain traction in the House, where Republican leaders oppose it.

Supporters of wage hikes have been successful at the state and local level. Last month, voters in New Jersey approved a hike in the minimum to $8.25 an hour, up from $7.25 an hour. California, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island also raised their minimum wages this year.

SEIU President Mary Kay Henry said she thinks the protests have helped encourage more states and localities to raise their minimum wage this year. She expects the number of cities and participants in the protests to grow next year as the union tries to keep pressure on fast food companies.

"I think we've totally changed the conversation about what these jobs are worth," Henry said. "These are no longer jobs being done by teenagers who need extra money. These are jobs being done by adults that can't find any other work."

While fast food workers tend to be a transient work force, Henry said her union has had success unionizing janitors and nursing home workers, which were also deemed too transient to be organized.

Hananel reported from Washington.

I went on a business trip over the summer and got to see both protesters here in the DC area and the protestors out in California. My analysis? The DC area protesters are very lazy when it comes to protesting, whereas the Californian protestors had alot of energy and better chants. Unfortunately the CA protestors also got in your face. Some chick from Burger King had lost her job for being late several times and thought that wasn't fair. I told her it wasn't "fair" for her boss to have to put up with such a unreliable employee. How about taking some responsibility and getting to work on time? Stupid and Lazy!

Fucking fast food workers! Don't ask me what sauce I want with my cicken nuggets, if you're going to forget to put it in the bag anyway. 90% of the time I have to remind them they forgot (Chik Fil A excluded). Fuck them and their minimum wage crap.

This is very true. I recently went to McDonalds and got 20 chicken nuggets (Coupons just came in the mail). Not only did they give me a hard time about the coupon (cashier didn't know how to process it), but they gave me a hard time when I asked for "Two of each sauces". Now by comparison we usually go to Burger King on Tuesdays (because they have a puppet show, every week in our area), and they always give us more than we asked for with the sauces. Such a huge difference in customer service.

I wonder what the Union Dues would be if they were to actually win. Think about it, they now get minimum wage, are seeking $15.00 an hour but would obviously settle for much less, say about $10.00/11.00 an hour. So then the workers have to pay union udes of say $15.00 or $20.00 a month, what that amounts to is the consumers have to ante up so the workers can pay their union dues.

and, yes "Thinking Out Loud" for me is always dangerous.

I don't understand the desire for raising the national minimum wage. $7.25 does not equal the same amount of buying power in Nebraska as it does in Manhattan, NY, etc. Let the states decide if they need to raise their own mininum wage. Shouldn't be a national issue....

Not one person who advocates a much higher minimum wage has ever run a business or created a job in their lives. Sure, raise the minimum wage to $20/hr and watch unemployment and inflation skyrocket while small businesses go under. Those who are able to keep their entry-level jobs will then enjoy paying $4,000/mo in rent and $20 for a burger. They will not end up any better off. Why are libs such moronic idiots?

A minimum wage job is not supposed to last forever, it is a transitional or supplemental job.

Minimum wage jobs are for geezers who need a little drinking money or pimply face teens still camped out with Mom and Pop.

Fast food work is not supposed to pay a "living wage" if by living wage you mean you can handle a mortgage and car payments on the earnings.

If all you are doing with your life is 40 hours a week at McD's, expect little else than a small rented room and Goodwill duds. Get familiar with the bus routes.

Yeah, fuck yourself, I don't eat fast food and I don't need you.

This entitlement bullshit is killing me. Who cares how much the corporation is making, the workers are still doing a shitty job at mindless work. This isn't a fucking welfare system, it's called capitalism. Why do you think the phrase goes, "do you wanna be flipping burgers for the rest of your life?" Make progress towards a real fucking job. If you don't have the credentials or ability to get one, maybe you shouldn't be living in an area with such a high cost of living. Why the fuck would you come here as an immigrant as opposed to a cheaper area of the country??

Good point actually - robots/computers can do a lot of the mindless jobs people are doing, like taking orders at sheetz for example. If the minimum wage ever gets raised too high, companies will start looking for ways to downsize the number of workers by automating tasks with computers.

So maybe they should ask themselves if $7.25/hr is better than $0....

The way to raise wages is to FIRST increase employment. As workers become harder to recruit, companies have to pay more. That is how pay rises for entry level morons. People with a pulse and a brain (no liberals, obviously), increase their pay by getting an education, showing up on time, working hard, and becoming valuable to their employers. This isn't too hard to figure out, though libs never seem to understand, and prefer instead to demonize business owners and legislate prosperity for those who choose not to work or get an education.

And how do you propose to decrease the labour surplus, exterminate a select number of people? Your typical Republican solution ignores the root of the problem. You're telling people who work full time, in most instances two jobs, who still can't afford to make ends meet to somehow afford the rising cost of a college education, community college included, fit it into their 80 hour work week, not including study time, and "pull themselves up by their bootstraps", nevermind they can't afford boots.

How colourful. Disproving the correlation between a college education and intelligence.

I'd rather give you facts however you're arguments won't be dictated by them. I believe Romney publicly stated that.

Of course you did. You worked a $7.50 job, most likely two of them, made ends meet, afforded college on your own and now you live in Fairfax?

Sad, that grown adults aren't humiliated by working a fast food job. Your only skill is flipping burgers?

JFC you miserable failures

This is cute and all except we are now doing things "Obama's (your) way" and it ain't workin' so well bud. Chronicly high unemployment and a DOA economy.

There will always be haves and have nots, rich and poor. Learn to deal with it.

All of them should go on strike! Profits are massive with franchises like McDonald's and could pay their employees 20 dollars a hour and still make a hefty profit.

Minimum wage was $1.60 per hour when I was a youngster. Grew up on a farm,
joined the Army, went to college on the GI Bill, worked as a minimum
wage security officer, sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door, and worked in a
couple of grimey factories along the way. The factories paid $2.50 per hour. Never once did I demand higher wages for doing shitty work, just tried to climb my way up on my own.

When you aren't born into a family that can afford to send you to college and you're brainwashed into believing that working a minimum wage job can and will provide you an avenue to betterment you remain in that type of job holding onto the hope that it will. Combined with the fact that jobs previously available to the high school educated are now exclusively for the college educated it's quite easy to get pigeonholed into the low income occupations.

I like this, tying wages to profits. So if the company has an unprofitable quarter or year, then they don't have to pay the employee. Both company and employees share in the company's success. It would be interesting to see how long that would last.

Sounds a lot like the depression era. And we all know what caused that.

You didn't have to because an average wage enough to live on. One could work fast food and afford to make ends meet.

That's a rubbish argument and is nothing more than a thinly veiled corporate defense.

Wages should be tied to profits. Or do you find justification in companies reporting record profits, paying increasing CEO salaries and retirements and expanding globally all while their employees, the people that actually do the work, can't afford to put a roof over their head or food in their stomachs? And if the company does go out of business they award themselves golden parachutes and their employees, again the ones that do the work, get laid off?

Please, you fucking sheep loser. Start a fuckin business then. God damn. Any moron could advertise on craigslist to pick up dog shit, walk dogs, babysit, you name it and make more money in less time than min. wage.

Hint: when the majority thinks college is a necessity, the truth is it's not.

keep waiting for your promising white-collar careers, and paying back the overpriced college tuition debt, when the corporate world and middle class is being eroded.

think outside the box, work hard and adapt and you will succeed. Or follow the other sheep in line to get slaughtered.

People like gerry have no idea what goes into running a profitable business, key word profitable. Dividends to shareholders, taxes, future investments, wages, utilities, insurance etc. He thinks you make a burger you sell a burger, 100% profit. Retard.

And one will start the business with what, money barrowed from ones parents? Now your solution is everyone should simply start a business. Do you think every business will succeed? The fact is the system has limited quality occupations to the college educated and has limited college educations to those who have been born into families that can afford it, whether it be community or a four year. The jobs that once paid enough to afford college have not increased accordingly and are thus creating a plutocracy. The wealthy in office are bribed by the wealthy in the corporate sector who also propagandise elections thus swaying elections.

No way. Bring home for minimum wage then was about $40.00 per week if you worked 40 hours. We also didn't have to stand in line with illegals for jobs. Keep trying.

Minimum wage jobs are NOT an indentured servitude. If they had skills, they could move to higher paying jobs. The choice is up to them. Increasing minimum wage enables them to do less. Not a sermon just a thought!

I'm going to presume the decade you were referring to was the 1970's? Minimum wage was worth considerably more then than it is now. To address your "illegals" reference, "illegal" workers don't effect wages or job availability, unless the company you're applying to is breaking the law. They do, however, pay taxes that they will never receive.

Only retards like gerry and obama believe people working at a fast food place should be able to afford three kids, two cars, college and a home in the burbs. All this on their salary alone.

You're assuming they don't. Increasing minimum wage enables them to put a roof over their head, food in their stomachs, rise above the need for public assistance and perhaps afford to go to college and learn a trade or get a degree and achieve their potential. As I said before, it's hard to pull oneself up by ones bootstraps when you can't afford boots.

How about shelter and food for starters?

There are always going to be people whose highest realistic expectation is fast food worker or checker at Walmart - whether through a lack of opportunity or lack of intellect or situational constraints. Not everyone can or should go to college, and not everyone has the capability to learn a trade. These people should still be able to earn a living wage.

And for those who complain that your burger costs may go up - you're paying one way or the other. Most of these minimum wage workers qualify for some form of Government assistance - your tax dollars. I'd rather see them paid more through honest work than subsidized through Government vouchers.

Food stamps and section 8 have been around for years. Not enough then get a second job, thats what I did when I graduated college.

You're suggesting they reside in the McDonalds? I'd also like to make you aware that these fast food chains do not feed you, you must purchase your food. In fact if there is food leftover you are required to throw it away, you cannot take it home with you.

Many of these people do have second jobs, some more than that. I presume you were fully self sufficient when you put yourself through college with these two jobs?

I certainly did. Worked full time job during the day M-F. Went to NVCC at night. No I didnt get to go to a "real college" see I was paying my own way. Worked part time gig on weekends. Drove beater of a car which I could repair on my own. Lived in home shared with four other people. Did life suck, damn right it did. Only because I was a young man at the time could I keep going. But living like that gave me the motivation to do something better with my life.

Now that I am doing well I am supposed to feel sorry for people who dont pay attention in school, have kids at age 16 and expect me to cover lifes expenses for them.

Looks like the nut bag wacko repuklicans have gone crazy on this topic! Dream on about the 20 dollar big mac if they were to pay workers more. All McDonald franchise owners are millionaires over and over. But for gods sake while they live in a huge mansion it would ruin them to pay living wages. Sad thing about it is Owners of such establishments are the 1% AND 99% of posters on this forum are not. Enjoy slavery repuklicants, you deserve it!

Yeah, a whopping $2 for a couple of burgers, damn that's gonna break the bank. They probably spent $6 for a pack of smokes.

And I'm sure that was some time ago, the environment has changed. You're attempting to justify your apathy and sense of superiority by painting everyone who struggles as lazy, unintelligent, etc., even when the facts prove otherwise.

Fuck'em.... McDonalds is not a career job, unless you own one or manage a few. You have no right to earn $15 an hour for flipping a fucking burger. You don't like it? Get another fucking job, or shoot for the management position.

One has to be in contact with the workplace, or do you suggest carrier pigeon? Consumerism is also an escape, much like alcohol or drugs. It's what this countries economy is built on.

Then pay them enough to ascend beyond the job, afford college and acquire that education you're constantly telling them to acquire. I'm sure you'd say the same thing about garbage men but I'd hedge my bets that your job is considerably less important than theirs. To close out my response I'll point out, again, that many of these people hold two or more jobs.

If the price is so miniscule then why not the billion dollar company swallow it? If the price is so miniscule why not allow the workers to take home the left over food as opposed to binning it?

McDonalds nor any other business operates to see to it that you get a fair shake in life. If you have to work more than one job the problem is the person looking back at you in the mirror. Stop having kids when you are 16, put down the pipe, pay attention in school and make a good impression at work. Good things will happen to you.

No, their interest is exploiting you to further line the pockets of those at the top, those that do no work and haven't since their parents put them through an ivy league education. You're also back to making this assumption that everyone struggling is a teen parent, crackhead or doesn't put the effort in. The least you could do is read my previous posts and construct a new point.

..I knew it was a shitty job, It gave me the drive to do better. And I did.

Man you are drinking obamas class warfare kool aid by the gallon. I can smell loser on you over the internet. In the past people would look at a rich person and say if he can get there so can I. Under obama people see a rich person and say he has enough money he owes me part of it.

The infamous loan, because everyone can get approved in the Republican fantasy. Even with state assistance community college isn't cheap.

When it's detrimental to the poor, working class, students, etc. it's "sound economics", when it's detrimental to those that have it all and have continue to acquire more through shady practice it's "class warfare". In the past people looked at the rich and said that because it was remotely possible, it hasn't been possible for decades.

Then how do you explain the Hispanics and Asians who come here with nothing and make it happen? I personally know several who run restaurants and dry cleaners.

While you are throwing around blame look at Obama. His allowing millions of illegals into the country widens the pool of possible job applicants. A corporation has no need to pay a competitive salary when they have so many competing for entry level jobs.

Those several don't reflect the majority. Your reasoning is comparable to knowing one youth that aspires to be a rapper, works hard at, makes it and therefore means every hardworking rapper can make it. Insert any occupation, one or a dozen doesn't reflect a majority.

You also seem to be convinced I'm some sort of Obama worshipper, I am not. No they don't have a need when there's surplus labour. On that note are you suggesting corporations run what is essentially slave labour and will inevitably result in an economic collapse due to the lack of demand for the product they manufacture?
