Report: Suicides in Virginia at 13-Year High in 2011
http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/report-suicides-in-virginia-at-13year-high-in-2011_23964675

In 2011, suicides in Virginia were the highest they’ve been in 13 years, according to a report recently released by Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Fairfax County reported 88 deaths that were determined to be suicides, according to the report. Loudoun County reported 37 incidents.

"Deaths due to natural causes, accidental overdoses, homicides, and suicides have fluctuated across time but are currently at their highest levels," the report reads.

The report also indicated that suicides were most frequent for white males between the ages of 45 and 54 years old.

The news station WJLA reported that unemployment, relationship problems, and lack of mental health resources contributed to the deaths.

Other findings from the medical examiner’s office:
•Whites committed suicide 5.2 times that of Hispanics, 4 times that of Asians, and 3.3 times that of blacks
•Men were 3.4 times more likely to commit suicide than women
•The months showing the highest numbers of suicide deaths are April and October, not the winter holiday months.
•Deaths from any cause are most frequent on Mondays. When broken down by manner of death, most natural and suicide deaths occurred on Monday and most accidental deaths occurred on Friday.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a free service that offers support to those with suicidal thoughts: 800-273-talK (8255).

Fairfax County also has a Crisislink Suicide Prevention Hotline: (703) 527-4077.

"The report also indicated that suicides were most frequent for white males between the ages of 45 and 54 years old." Well, that's not surprising at all considering the state of our economy. White men are being systematically targeted. They can't find full-time work (unless they want to give themselves over to the government), take care of their families, fend off the ever-increasing attacks that they are all racists, affirmative action, neo-feminism, and the push to incentivize companies to hire illegal aliens. It's a wonder the rate isn't higher.

Compare the ratio between Loudoun and Fairfax btw:

Via wikipedia for Population Estimates from 2012.. didn't look for the 2011 numbers:

Loudoun: 336,898
Fairfax: 1,118,602

L: 336,898/37 = 9,105.35
F: 1,118,60/88 = 12,711.38

So.. 1 in 9105 people in Loudoun County killed themselves vs 1 in 12,711 in Fairfax County.

Add to the above the ever-decreasing financial security. Pensions are gone the way of the dodo bird, 401k's won't support you with these returns, companies are shedding traditional benefits as fast as they can, taxes and fees are going up at an insane rate. don't even get me started on college costs for the kids.

hell, one big illness is enough to bankrupt your family anymore.

i agree -- it's a wonder the rate isn't higher.

Not surprising since it's been the same forever.

Middle-aged white dudes tend to off themselves at a higher rate for a variety of reasons. A significant one being that they're just better at it than some others who tend to half-ass the attempts and given the favored methods. That is, a gun favored by old white guys works great. Poisoning (mostly prescription drugs) favored by some others, not as well and better chance at being saved.

The strongest correlation among all tends to be with chronic alcohol and other substance abuse which middle-aged white dudes excel at as well.

Add to this that both parents work, kids grow up without their parents - so no real bonding. Few or no family events together. Sounds like the death of the family. Kids also under alot of pressure to succeed and parents' intolerance of any kind of failure.

What are you talking about, Ivy? I'm in that demographic and don't have any of the concerns you raise? The fact is that these tragic situations are most often the result of untreated mental illness, addictions, and domestic situations, not your silly political issues.

Nick..do you work for the government?...if not, you must be one of the lucky ones that still has a job. Are you a medical professional? Where did you get that information? How would you know that someone committed suicide because of "untreated" mental illness? Are you just guessing at that?...addiction is not suicide; it's called an overdose. domestic "situations" are called abuse and most abuse victims don't commit suicide.

Your laptop/tablet on the blink and mom won't buy a new one and tell you to mover out and get a job, losing seven figure paying job, can't find seven figure job, your financial scam coming to an end, getting caught for child porn/fraud, then you just finding out or realize that you are going to be poor as a negro.....Time to take permanent leave.

Always save the last round for yourself.

Has anyone else noticed the increase in suicides? Not just in our area (the kid on 66, the girl jumping out of car, guy jumping off building in Reston, T-Mobile car crash, etc.), but also with celebrities? Another one just offed himself this week. What's going on? Has life really gotten so difficult?

YEA This topic needs more thinking. Mental Health needs family and friend safety net for both young people and old.

Also, medical help support net important in the community

Are "safety net" issues breaking down breaking down in Virginia for people ?

I think this is an issue of people's low tolerance and adaptibility in the wake of high tension and stress. Younger folks worried about peer pressure, pleasing their parents, etc. Older folks worried about income, medical costs, etc. The message should be, things always change. Things are good, then bad, then good again. I've noticed that lots of my peers don't plan for the future. No plan = failure.
