What is the law on tinted windows in this area? (VA, MD, DC)

New to the area and am curious about the laws regarding tinted windows and exterior car lighting underneath and by the plates. I know in Florida there are restrictions but I couldn't find anything online for VA, MD, or DC.

Expert here for VA

There is a tint law on the books in VA. There is no VA inspection regulations regarding window tint EXCEPT for the windshield. Windshield tint cannot be more than 4 inches below roof line at top of windshield.

Side glass front seats- 50%
Rear glass- 35%

The only Police that enforce this is the State Police. County and local cops dont really care. After getting a couple tickets I did some research and the State Police enforce it as a "safety issue". Not your safety, theirs. The only one they care about is the drivers side door glass. They want to be able to see you when they pull you over (you might be holding a gun).

last time I got busted the fine was $90 and a couple points I think. And yes, they have a little meter they hang on your door glass and it measures the tint percentage (so they say).

DC & MD....no clue

Fairfax PD enforces tint laws, too. Got a ticket for it.

Blah blah blah

- Windshield can be tinted with doctor authorization.
- Tinting vioaltions do not results in points. In fact.. is there even a such thing as a 2 point offense?

Actually, most departments have gone to having officers approach a car on a traffic stop from the passenger side---safer than having the officer just inches away from moving traffic with absolutely no protection from a 2 ton missle....

EVERY branch of law enforcement in the area will stop you for illegal tint. It is one of the most popular pretextual reasons to pull someone over, up there with object dangling from rear view mirror. When they don't find your weed or catch you drunk then you will get a ticket for the tint. See it multiple times a day in court.
So go ahead and do it. Sounds like you are begging for the attention.

LOL. The law clearly states that you're a Grade-A Douchebag for doing either. Congratulations!

No license plate covers/ tint
No limo tint
No tint on ANY LIGHTS.

Or you can be like some of the idiots around here and do all of the above and try your luck. I saw a flat black range rover with flat black wheels, illegal tint, and tinted tail lights and tinted license plate covers on 66 today. The idiot didn't even have his lights on with low visibility due to the rain this morning. When he hit his brakes, you could hardly tell they were on.

Anyone could rear end that idiot on purpose and win in court.

This is coming from someone who used to modify cars, but only mildly. The most I would do is a LIGHT smoke to tail lights - not full on blacked out like some idiots.

If you're in the backseat of your honda balling a chimpanzee the typical fairfax slacker wandering by must be able to record the action with his cell phone.

New laws went into effect monday. Look it up.
