purse stolen at Giant
Posted by: warning for you ()

My purse was stolen (from the cart) while shopping at the Cardinal Forest Giant in West Springfield, I didn't realize this until I went to check out. The police were called, however they called me back about an hour later (didn't show up). I have been told that I am to ask the store to look at the security tapes. Does this sound like a reasonable procedure? Does anyone have experience with this?

The police asked you to check with the store to see the tapes? Uh no, normal procedure would be for them to come out, do a report, and then ask the loss prevention manager to pull the tape, get a screen capture of the perp, print it out, and include in the report.

Sounds reasonable to me, dont just sit back and expect the cops to do everything as I doubt they really give a shit unless you are smoking hot, I would do as much as you can to help them. Plus they store policy might be that they will not release tapes to law enforcement without a supeona (sp), but a customer they might help.

Why were you not watching your purse? This kind of stuff happens all the time.

Watch your purse while shopping..

Lock your doors...including your car doors...

Do not leave your cell phone on bar, restaurant table, counter and then walk away...same with your wallet...

Do not walk down the dark street or parking lot looking at your cell phone..

These are just a few minor things people should do to keep from being a victim.

As usual Mr GFR blames the victim.

LOVING the ppl who read this, and get all dickhard thinking about the race of the perp

@OP - you already got yr answer. Cops will have store review tape. Giant will have security ppl check it out once they get report from police.

@xcxcxc-I dont think he was BLAMING the victim as much as just trying to help make sure this dont happen again to her.

That's interesting. I'll tell you what, go look up any statistic on the ethnic background of crack users, (or "crackheads", as you put it). I'm sure that no one will be surprised to discover that 95% of crack dealers and users are Negros. But again, no real surprise there.

Shopping at Giant is the same as being robbed. Their prices are so high, I can't even afford to walk in the door. Everything there is cheaper somewhere else.

Make sure you get a copy of the police report, some credit card company's fraud protection require it.

Good news! Giant called this morning and they found my purse. I feel a bit chagrined about thinking it was stolen. It appears that everything is in it. The manager came in this morning (different manager from yesterday) and found it when she opened the safe. She was unhappy that yesterday's staff did not call me (they found it yesterday and my phone number was in there on my checks). I must have set the purse down somewhere. I can't really blame this on anyone but me, but I have had several big life changes in the past month and so I'm sure I'm entitled to forget something. So, faith restored. Not everyone is a druggie or thug out there. I am thankful to whomever turned it in.

My purse was stolen from a cart at the Giant in Springfiel Plaza---ON CHRISTMAS EVE...

I also called the FCPD-total waste of time-they NEVER returned my call.

I called them back 3-4 times to follow up and they did nothing.

I actually went to local merchants asking for their security video as my credit card had been used 4-5 times and the merchant told me to have the cops come with a memory stick and get the image.

The cops nevered bothered even though I did all the legwork even getting the exact time my card was used.

NOTHING. Expect the same from these cops. They are lazy.

It is so easy for someone to steal a purse sitting in a cart when you are distracted reading labels and shopping. I keep my purse on my shoulder at all times.

Well then I take back everything I said about Mr. GFR. So how in the world did you lose your purse at Giant then? That was pretty stupid. Duh...Where's my purse??? A black person must have taken it. Did you leave it in the bathroom?

For some of us, it's pretty easy. I've always been extraordinarily absentminded (would probably be called ADD today). I once inadvertently left my purse in a car hitch hiking around Europe. Fortunately, my traveling companion ran and got it back at a stoplight. I once left my purse in a phone booth (got it back, minus the money). I've left my keys in several places (including the locked car). Despite double and triple checking, I still lose things all the time. It's a problem.

Naw....I blame the criminals but criminals are criminals. They rob and take your shit. That's what criminals do.

You, as a dumb ass can choose to be a victim if you want to.

This probably isn't relevant, but one time in middle school I stole condoms from Giant. The police never came after me. Take it for what it's worth.

Happened to my wife, in a Giant. She noticed it within a minute or two and went to the front exit to try to catch them on the way out. Told the store manager, then called police and me. By the time the police arrived 20 minutes later I had called the credit card companies and found the credit cards were already used at nearby stores to purchase gift cards. Gave the police the locations and times. The police told me to check trash cans near the stores where the cards were used. Sure enough, found the purse right outside one of the stores in a trash can. Only things missing were cash and the credit cards. A few days later the police reviewed surveillance tapes and called to tell me that they had a suspect who was known to them. They made the arrest, told us when the court date was, and we did not need to appear as they had enough evidence to send the two involved to jail.

All in all, I was very happy with how Fairfax County police handled the matter.
