Beggars in FXCO - Fairlakes Best Buy area
Posted by: Ccof ()

I'm encountering more and more beggars in FXCO. They seem out of place and I'm always skeptical of their stories. Does anyone here know who any of these people are? What are their stories? The Patch should do a story on them. Interview them and if legit, get them help.

How much would the Lamb Center help them? Is there another place for them to go rather than begging in public?

I don't generally give to these unknown people. There are too many scammers out there. If they are legit, I'd be happy to help them out.

I saw a guy outside the Twinbrook Safeway with a sign stating he'd work hard for food. Another guy was outside of the Walmart/old Food Lion shopping area in Fair Lakes. He seems to be there on a regular basis.

They could go to TLC, Salvation army, or best yet get Sharon to take care of them.

There is often panhandlers at the intersection with Stringfellow, near that Food Lion. I saw one there last night. It was an old white guy.

Are you seeing gypsies? Or just ordinary homeless?

What do you expect when there is no affordable housing in the area and republican criminals don't pay living wages to minorities, expect the needy to ask for money. YOU CAN help them by giving them 20 dollars. Republicans would eat their own babies before reaching into their pocket to help someone else.

Old overweight dude, around 350lbs or so (usually wears a blue jacket)? If that fits the description, that douchebag has been out there panhandling for the last 4-5 years. I've seen him at Starbucks dressed up normal with friends laughing and joking about the fags that continue to give him money to pay rent.

I call the cops every time I see him so they run him off for loitering. I wish they would make it illegal and throw his fat ass in jail.

Assuming it's not gypsies/scammers, everybody I know that works with the homeless says the odds are very high that any money you give a panhandler goes to support a substance abuse problem because there are places they can get help for food and shelter, but not booze. If you really want to help, get an extra hamburger at the drive-through and hand that to them as you drive by, but don't be surprised if it just gets tossed - they're really not looking for food, regardless of what their sign says.

How about the guy with the moped who's always at the county parkway exit to Braddock Rd? Could someone donate some acne medicine for him?

I saw on one of the crime reports, that the police arrested some of them for being aggressive with some people who wouldn't give them money. Turned out they were from somewhere in Maryland. Don't give any of them any money, all of them are frauds.

I take great pride in driving by these pariahs and handing them a brochure from my social service charity. I sometimes explain with great feigned concern on my face that in Fairfax County, there is no need to stand outside and beg for money because we have established networks that will provide food, clothing, shelter, a meal...you just need to call and talk to a staffer. Guess what? I've never been called.

I also hand these brochures out when I'm approached. I was flipped the bird by one such "needy" person.

Truly needy in Fairfax County are very savvy - shockingly so. They know about all available services and aren't afraid to avail themselves. That's what we're here for. The social service community is small with many overlaps - we know names and recognize faces and families.

I say all this to warn you soft hearted and giving people. The best thing you can do is remind these fake beggars to call the Lamb Center, for instance.

We don't use the G-word (gypsies) anymore.

They are now called Roma people are individuals of Romani descent.

Meanwhile, hold fast to your wallet and watch out for bump-and-run thefts.

I believe most studies have shown that Republicans are more generous givers than Democrats.

Here is a quick link I found so I don't have to GTFO:

Let's see- average rent for a 1 bedroom in Fairfax County- $1,100.

1100/30= 36.67 per day. Lets say another 15 a day for food (or eat free at the homeless spots and collect Food Stamps/EBT) and 25/mo (or 84 cents a day) on a prepaid cell and 50/mo (or 1.67/day) electric (lowballing).

Let's say they also have a $30/day drug habit.

So they need to make $70/day panhandling to keep up with an apartment, food, and a basic cell phone- maybe get free bus tokens from TLC for transportation.

All they need to do is get $1-2 from 40 people a day and they have it MADE.

Fuck, makes me want to go out and panhandle instead of work....

Utilities... Though I'm sure you can rough it without...

Say what you will but panhandling sounds like pretty lousy work but I love capitalism so all the power to them...

waiting for an iPhone app called 'beggar open registry'

each time you donate, you enter the amount and snap a photo with their consent.

the app knows your location, so over time we can look at a map view (like Zillow) and zoom in.

facial recognition would be a good feature in order to link donations to and individual beggar.
