New tile in bathroom/shower - best way to go?
Posted by: VEIK ()

I need to retile my bathroom and standing shower, walls and floor
Both are relatively small jobs. No electrical, no walls to move, no real plumbing.

Can anyone recommend a company in Fairfax Co who does this work?

Also, is going a craigslist route just asking for trouble? (unlicensed, insurance, etc)

Go to a tile store and ask if they have any recommendations.

And yes, Craigslist is just asking for trouble.

I've heard DC Drywall is pretty good. :)

I'm sure you can find some cheap labor in front of your local 7-11.

Craigslist: yes, you're asking for trouble.

Local 7-11: um, sure if you like hiring illegals who don't know what the fuck they're doing and the whole time are casing your house to come back a little later that evening.

Serious suggestion: Angie's List. We've used it for years and have NEVER gone wrong when hiring contractors found with them. Maybe others have, but our experience has been a good one. If you're not up for a subscription try Service Magic. I don't recall how much Angie's List is (must be cheap if I can't remember) but using it even just once and not getting a contractor who fucks up your house is worth it. Plus you'll use it for other contractors as well, trust me.

Note: I have no financial arrangement or relation to Angie's List other than being a long time subscriber to the service.

Okay, last suggestion: if you really want to go the easiest way AND have all of the risk on another party check if Home Depot or Lowes offer these services. I know they do carpeting, not sure about bathrooms and tiling. But if they do you'll a) need to buy materials from them and b) expect to pay a bit of a mark-up on the labor. However, if anything is not right or gets fucked up you're dealing with Home Depot to make it right, not some migrante and his Dreamer son.

I hear ya.

Lowes charges about $5/sq foot for tile installation + materials.

is that good? bad? average?

Not sure. But you might also want to check with some of the tile shops around. I know there are two of them off Backlick Road south of Springfield as you approach Lorton. There's probably a bunch in your part of the county, too. They're generally found in those one story industrial park settings. I'd be willing to bet they have relationships or even just referrals with different installation companies.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Small bathroom downstairs just requires removing the vanity and toilet to get around it. Thinking about doing it myself, but at the same time don't want it to turn into a huge mistake if I mess anything up.

If you're up for a challenge and feel confident, you can probably do a small one yourself

I recommend taking Tile-Just Do It class through Fairfax County ACE.

Pretty sure you'd only need a permit if you were moving a bunch of plumbing around, but it doesn't sound like you are. You should be good.
