I'm always amazed that smart TJ kids would opt to go military academies. Why put out all the effort that TJ requires if all you want to do is go into the fucking military? They'll take anybody that's stupid enough to go fight and die for ExxonMobil, et. al.

I wonder if this reflects a new push by W&M toward something more STEM?

The service academies are some of the hardest colleges to get into.

1. No tuition at the US military academies. Graduate with no debt and the graduate is guaranteed a job.

2. The academies, especially the US Naval Academy, has an excellent reputation for providing a quality education (especially in engineering).

3. Right now, the US Air Force is helping to combat fires in Colorado. The US military does a lot more than "fight and die for ExxonMobil." Sometimes, a Marine even holds an umbrella for Dumbo Obama, the stupidest president ever.

Meh...W&M is a nice school. If my kid wants to go there and can't because some slopes from TJ took all the slots then we'll just move temporarily to a region of the state with open slots. Once they gain admission, we move right back into our house in NOVA.

Plenty of soldiers held plenty of umbrellas for Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II. Go back to taking your government handouts and then complaining about taxes.

Who wants to go to college with 65 of your closest high school friends? Who does that? It would just be like grade 13? You are bringing 1/7 of your high school class with you? No thanks.

I think the UMBC kid made a better decision.

Yeah, you have to buy yourself a politician to get an appointment. That can get pricey.

They have 86 going to UVA.

They seem to have a nice little pipeline to Cornell.

I'm surprised to see Bradley on this list.

You know why there's no pictures of Marines holding an umbrella for Reagan, Bush or Bush II? Because they didn't respect those Presidents enough to hold an umbrella for them...

TJ publishes this information. Came from a TJ parent who posted on another board.

Don't know whether any of te other schools do.

Feel sorry for the 10 going to CMU. It's a 70/30 guy to girl ratio. All undergrad courses are plain vanilla and meant to generate income for the grad programs. Subpar dorms compared to Pitt down the street. And for the money you could get two degrees from Pitt.
Tartan pride my ass.

Those numbers are indeed interesting. If you graduate from TJ, you can pretty much call your shot as far as where you want to go to under-grad. I get the bias on Virginia schools because that's the state TJ's in but, there's a shit-ton of higher ranked schools regardless of what you want to study.

There was a similar list published in the Westfield High School newspaper (June - Vol 13, Issue 8), but a brief search of the school website did not turn up something online.

One such list would imply, IMHO, a TJ-specific thang; TWO, however, suggests to THIS parent that it's a FCPS thang so the info for ALL schools should be out there somewhere.

Surfing around FCPS-ish websites I logged into Blackbaord and, from there, into the "Family Connection" set of pages. One of those pages showed acceptances and attendances to colleges by Westfield students but for the years 2008-2012.
So the information is officially out there SOMEWHERE and is compiled on that page for multiple years:

https://connection.naviance.com/family-connection/colleges/acceptance

[you'll have to log into Blackbaord, etc, to get the school-specific info]

Does anyone have any information on the quota system for Northern Virginia students in operation at the VA state universities?

e.g.
whether its formal/informal
how it operates
rough stats
on what legal basis

etc

The umbrella was not held for Obama because of respect, he has done nothing to earn the respect of the Marines. The reason there is no picture of a Marine holding an umbrella for Reagan or the Bushs' is because they respected the Marines enough not to ask. But Obama can't get wet can he?

This distribution is typical of any high school in Fairfax even NoVa if you look at the top 1/3 of the graduating class which is where these kids would have been if they would have stayed at their home school

Sad about the amount of people going to UVA and WM

These kids should be going to better schools if they are really the best of the best

There should be many more at MIT Berkely Cal Tech Princeton etc

I agree 19 to Cornell is idiotic

Not some of.

THE.

Harder to get into than Harvard. You don't need a Congressional appointment to get into Harvard. You don't have to be an athlete to get into Harvard. And the academics are very competitive too.

As to the benefits, "No tuition" summed it up well.

And fighting for your country is an honorable undertaking.

More like where the top 10 to 20% ends up, depending on the school.

Only seems reasonable. W&M is the best in-state school, so it makes sense that the best high school would send a bunch of kids there.

Want your kid to go there? Have him earn it. Just like they do in the real world.

Aren't the Congressmen limited to 6 appointments each? In NOVA and the DC area, I would think that is very very competitive. Wonder if it is all done on merit? You'd think the offspring of large donors and prominent constituents would have an edge?

Yes, they are limited. I suspect donors matter, but I don't know.

Just considering how many retired Admirals and Generals there are around here, you would have to think thier offspring will have an advantage.

And now they have to let in women too - presumably ones not afraid to be sexually assaulted (forgive me, the devil made me say that).

Woodson and Langley perhaps. But LB and Robinson? Madison and Oakton beat those two middle-class dives. LB and Robinson are on par with West Springfield and Centreville and just one step above Westfield penal colony. No offense.

Damn these kids are probably poor or something.
Surprising no kids are going to NVCC. These kids might as well go to NVCC because commuting sucks ass.

100 people from our class are going to NVCC. Can't wait to hear when most of them drop out and work in fastfood restaurants at age 25.
