Lets see some of these concord teams with the same amount of population that south county has

It's probably not as simple as that - with their already tough schedules Centreville/Westfield might not want to drop an easier team off the schedule and add even one more top contender. And I suspect a lot of these games are scheduled a couple years in advance.

Don't read too much into simple population numbers. Yes, SoCo has 2,000 students, whereas CV has 2,300 and WF 2,800. Historically over time, I agree population matters. That is why Westfied is consistenty excellent, along with great coaching and much parental involvement from the youth leagues onwards.

However, TC Williams has 2,900 and they consistently are below average in football.

Is as much about demographics as anything, i.e. the percentage of students whose parents grew up watching/playing American Football will vary widely across the ever-so-diverse Fairfax County landscape.

And to some extent, it's partly luck too. Centreville happens to have 6 seniors who will play college football next year. Next year it may be one and after that who knows. The freshman team hadn't lost in 5 years but is now losing some games.

Remember, Centreville had consecutive 1-9 and 3-7 seasons just a few years ago, with essentially the same population.

Re: scheduling stronger opponents...

I'm pretty sure that's what Soco was trying to do when they scheduled Chantilly... they didn't realize that Chantilly would suck this year.

it's also funny to me that concorde fans will site playing Stone Bridge as a tough game for Westfield or Cville, but won't give South County any credit for beating Stone Bridge in the playoffs a couple years ago

also, I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the DSA's make requests for opponents on the schedule, but they aren't guaranteed. A committee will take those requests and match up teams when they have common interest in playing each other. It's not like the coach just goes out and schedules all the worst teams.

Soco has played Concorde teams every year if you go back in the schedules... Chantilly a few times, Robinson a couple of times, Centreville a couple of times, and Oakton and Westfield further back when they were a newer school. Generally, they play a neighborhood rival - Hayfield, which pretty much everyone does. All other games except for one are district games, which they can't control.

Exactly. we even kept them from scoring a touchdown back then.

SOCO schedule is traditionally very weak. They 'may' have one good game throughout the season and then they roll into the postseason. And I agree, the number of kids at the school means nothing….look at demographics and feeder programs. South County has the SCAA and then they have SYC and maybe one other feeder program. I'll give South County a few more years and then I'm guessing their soccer program will be doing really well. That Route 1 corridor will be producing some fantastic soccer players.

Viva Concord.

Honest question for my Soco believers,

Has the defense improved from last year? I think its safe to say you guys can score, but unless you guys can put up a little bit of a fight on defense when it counts, I dont see how this year is different from last.

Opinions welcomed...

WE got a transfer middle linebacker from new England i believe. He is going to be the cornerstone for this defense. And everyone else got a better. The defense is better than last year's

How about the QB? The kid from last year seem to be the focal point of the offense, is that the case this year?

Re: High School Football 2014

The QB this year is a Junior who played mostly DB last year and as a freshman played QB. The returning RBs, Gerald Huelett and Rob Avery, have been the focal point of the offense this year and for good reason. Both are extremely strong, each bench at least 300 lbs, just to give an idea. They combine for a pretty good one two punch. Huelett is much faster and fleet footed than Avery, who is far and away the power back, he plays mainly F in the triple option attack. Avery returns to the field this Friday after being out the last two games so it will be interesting to see both of them on the field at the same time and the dynamic they bring to the offense. It is, however, hard to ignore the talented receivers on the field as well. #81, a senior and #80 a freshman are both big, fast receivers who can come down with most any kind of throw and are deceptively fast.

This all sounds pretty biased but it is what I've seen from the offense so far this season. I'm sure most anyone else who's been to more than 1 game would agree with most everything here.

Potential to be the best defender in the region? Absolutely. Is he right now? No. Mental mistakes (i.e. not filling his gap properly or taking a poor angle while scraping to the c gap) are keeping him from really being a dominate force on defense every game, all game long.

Cville was up 17-0 against W Springfield with a few mintues left in the 3rd qtr with WS 1st and goal from the 3yd line. Instead of making 17-7 entering the 4th. Cville picked up off a pass and returned it 100 yds for a score and made the game look worse than it was. WS is really going on offense with a lot sophomores and jr's. However Soco had their way with WS even though their a lot better today than they were week 1. Cville/Soco all be a good game. Soco is really good on defense and if they go up like they did last year Cville won't recover

WS may suprise some people in the playoffs this year. They beat LB in all three phases of the game. Who beat westfields which beat Cville. It'll be intersting

You Concorde fans may want to quiet down bc Soco is really good and they are physical which travels well in November. However Cville is really loaded when healthy and the favorites but if they are not healthy Soco will win.

I think Westfield might also have a dog in this fight. They are very balanced on offense, big physical nasty o-line, great special teams, and a solid physical hard hitting defense. They are playing their best ball right now, have improved each week, most importantly they are a team, nit a bunch of individual glory hounds.

For the post above about WS beating LB who beat Westfield who beat Cville, dont read much into that. Westfield was flagged for 17 penalties for close to 150 yards. They also had an INT return for a TD called back on a ridiculous roughing the passer penalty. They beat themselves much more than LB did, no disrespect intended to LB.

Going into last weeks game Robinson fans were saying the same thing, we beat LB who beat Westfield so why even play the game. Westfield won 31-14, would have been 31-7 if Westfield didn't fumble a punt early in the 3rd quarter inside their 25 yard line. Westfield pulled their starters at the start of the 4th quarter.

A couple things about that Centreville/West Spring game. I was impressed by their defense but AJ Turner and Taylor Boose didn't play so Centreville played their 2nd string rb's. Boose returned the next week and put up 180, 200 and 160 yards against Concorde District defenses. The drive you describe happened after a disputed call on at TD. I don't know if it was a bad call or not but Haddock went nuts on the refs and I must have pissed them off because they called about 6 penalties on Centreville on that drive to allow WS to get to the 5 yard line. WS had no other drives of note in that game. I came away respecting their defense but not impressed at all with their offense.

Cville had 3 flags on that drive from WS 23 YL but only 1 counted for 5 yards.

1 flag was a sideline warning, 1 for encroachment (5 yards) and 1 holding (WS declined).

If AJ turner comes back this season, Centreville is a completely different team. He is the workhorse running the ball, he is the ball hawking free safety they are missing to run the style of defense they want to, and if you kick it to him, might as well count it as 6.

If AJ doesn't play this season, I think the playoffs will become very interesting. The fact the Centreville is in this discussion without the VA player of the year last year, should show you how go they are and can be.

I get why everyone is judging Centreville off of the games they have played, but they havent had all the pieces to the puzzle together this season, if and when it happens, I think everyone will see the state champion level team again. Doesn't mean Soco or Westfield cannot beat them, I just remember how bady Centreville dismantled EVERY TEAM last year with AJ turner. He is the key piece. Without him they will contend, win or lose. With him, I don't think anyone knows how good they truly may be...

Your analysis is mostly correct. The LB game was an anomaly - for whatever reason in the second half of that game the officiating decided to make an example out of Westfield and killed every drive they had in the second half.

I dunno know, Westfield's punting game has been atrocious this year and their punt/kickoff returns have been weak. I think they have muffed or fumbled a return almost every game this year.

I do still see Centreville as the team to beat regardless of whether or not they have Turner back. Without Walter at QB though they will not be at the same level as last year.

______________________________________________________________________________

I agree with you about the punting game, but most of it is self inflicted, Scoville is not the punter, their TE is. But they like to run that punt where Scoville rolls out to his right and either runs it or punts it depending on coverage and distance. When the TE punts the ball their pretty spot on in regards to a quality unit.

Westfield's return units have lost a little edge in dynamics, mainly because Pearson is no longer on the team. They have plenty of candidates, they just seem to be muddling around as far as who their top guys are.

Centreville is still the team to beat because they are the defending champions, have tons of talent, and are well coached. But as I stated, Westfield has a ton of talent, maybe not the number of individual stars that Centreville has but a lot of solid ball players, and are also well coached.

Should be some great football the past few weeks, if Centreville gets all their players healthy, Westfield continues to play solid and improve each week the way they have since the LB game, both will be a challenge for whomever they play. No disrespect to anyone else out there but I'm just basing it off having watched a good number of these 6A teams play via Gameday Magazine and looking at their schedules.

Still debating on which game to see tonight:

Tuscarora @ Freedom-SR: would like to watch Noah Reimers play but it will be a total beatdown so not a fun game

South County @ W.T. Woodson: would like to see SoCo in person but it will be a total beatdown so not a fun game

Yorktown @ Chantilly: could be a competitive game, would like to see if Chantilly has improved from the Madison game I was at earlier in the season

Briar Woods @ Park View: told a friend I would watch their son play this year but a 70-0 game just doesn't interest me.

Am I missing a good game out there?

Centreville must have forgotten that west Springfield got behind the entire defense on the second play of the game? Unfortunately the kid dropped an essay pass. Funny how parents like to have selective memory

Centreville fans are starting to get annoying. They were talking huge the whole year and then they fall to westfields and it's excuse after excuse. If they lose to Soco it'll probably be the same old shit.

Soco has the talent to win the state championship. Centreville may be stronger but Soco is more tenacious

Westfield's defense will be just fine, they always seem to make a play or stand when needed. Having watched them the past few years they definitely seem to take more chances than in the past. Maybe their DC figures he can since Westfield's offense has become so balanced and explosive. Love the fact that they've finally discovered they have 3 good receivers who are all over 6'3 and a QB who is better than everyone thought.

Time for my predictions for the top seeds. It is not who I think is better but how I think the numbers will come out. I wanted to see who won the WS/Annandale game because a WS win would give Centreville a boost.

The teams in the 5-10 grouping (approx 31 points) are bunched together and 1 win or loss by an oppenent could jump or drop them several spots. Since Division 5 losses don't hurt you if they are in your district and I am not sure who is in each district I will not go into detail but the teams I have in this group are LB, Battlefield/Patiot loser, WS, W&L, Hayfield & maybe Yorktown. Surprisingly I have Robinson below this group.

4th Seed

Battlefield/Patriot winner 33.1 points
Projected opponent records: 46-54

Pretty sure about his one. Since they play all district opponents it should not change

3rd Seed

South County 34.2 points
Projected opponents record: 42-58
If LB beats SC they could have 33.3 points and be the 3rd seed but it would be very close

2nd Seed

Westfield 35.3 points
Projected opponents record: 57-42

If LB beats SC it would increase to 35.4 points but I just don't see a way it could be higher since some of their non common opponents with Centreville play each other and one will win and one will lose.

1st Seed Centreville 35.44, 35.67 or 35.89 points
Projected opponents record: 54-36

W&L has potentially tough games with Wakefield and Yorktown. If they lost them both and LB beat SC Centreville would edge out Westfield 35.44 to 35.40 per my calculations. More likely W&L would win one or both of those games and Centreville's power points would be 35.67 or 35.89.

I have no idea who is going to win since SC has not been tested and Centreville's seemingly constant injury issues (what's the deal with AJ Turner?). Since there seems to be a large gap between the top three teams and the next level being the the number 1 seed and avoiding the other 2 until the finals is a clear advantage.

I am no Cville or Westfield fan but if SOCO just played some tougher games they would not worry about seeding. Rules are rules so compete in way to take advantage and get good seed....VHSL is telling you by means of rules to schedule tougher opponents

Sure it would. Its based on a mathematical rating. If that's how it turns out, that's how it turns out.

cville getting a better seed than a team with a better record and had already beaten them would not be fair

I totally agree. It will be great to see more 6A vs 5A teams. One of the interesting points is that Cville and Westfield both now have 2 5A games in their schedule, and South County has 1, and Lake Braddock is nowhere to be found.

South County will still have a district game against 5A Lee.

Well ... they have

South County beat Centreville and Westfield (WF in playoffs) in 2009. They also played both teams pretty close in other games around that time. Soco also beat Robinson several years back, and have beaten Chantilly at least a couple of times.

Before you cry that these games were 5 years ago, I point out that many of the Concorde glories that keep being touted were as far back as these games, if not earlier.

What a little fucking whiner you are! Jeez Dude, Man up and just root for South County without whining about every comment that gets posted. South County will lose to either Centreville or Westfield in the playoffs. They play a soft schedule, they run the score up on people, these are the facts. They have an above average team and with their schedule that makes them undefeated.

In 2009, they caught Centreville (3-7) and Westfield (6-4) in rare down seasons. You made your point, but a counterpoint could be that SoCo has never made it past the second round in 6A playoffs.

Not trying to whine... the sentiment from the Concorde crowd is "South County needs to be able to beat the big boys/they never schedule anyone tough". I was simply stating a fact that they have beaten Concorde teams before and they schedule them every year.

Robinson just lost two in a row and 7-0 to a bad oakton team. WS just beat up a solid Annandale team who kept it close against LB. WS also blew out oakton in scrimmage earlier this year 35-10.

Patriot has had a soft schedule in the old cardinal district

The top 3 teams are a level above everyone else

Soco may beat up on LB. Their dline is way too small and Soco wears you out with their uptempo. They got up on WS 14-0 on WS with 9:30 left in the 1st qtr. It was reasonable the rest of the way.

Sucks for Westfields. They have to go through Soco and Centreville twice to get out if the region.

In the entire history of the National District I don't think Hayfield has lost to any other school except Yorktown and W-L. So historically speaking the odds are in Hayfield's favor. Falls Church thinks they can win big though, especially because this is the last year they will play Hayfield. The two schools will never meet again. Rots of ruck.

Robinson beat Lake Braddock. They have been without their starting QB the last two weeks. Lake Braddock has wins over Stone Bridge and Westfield and been struggling with injuries also.

Going by VHSL power points its:

1. Westfield
2. Centreville
3. South County
4. Lake Braddock
4. Patriot
6. Battlefield
7. West Springfield
8. Hayfield
9. Robinson
10. Yorktown

Robinson v. Chantilly, Lake Braddock v. South County, Hayfield v. Falls Church this week will shake up the rankings.

Game of the year is Patriot vs Battlefield the last week of the season. Both teams will be 8-1 going in to find out the district winner and big playoff implications on the line. 2 of the best quarterback/receiver duos in the state going at it. Battlefield's defense is superior but it should be one for the ages

No. South County/Lake Braddock is more important than that game. It will influence the higher seeds more. but the game of the year already happened b/t Cville and Westfields

Common sense would dictate when teams are tied in power points it would come down to teams both have played and if that doesn't work then strength of schedule. At least that's what makes the most sense to me
