Message to AJ Turner

This is an open note from a fan who has watched and/or coached football for thirty years. Now that your illustrious high school career is over, everyone wishes you great success at the next level. Of course you must follow your own dreams and interests but here is some humble advice.

Focus now on becoming the best free safety you possibly can be as that is in my estimation your ticket to success in college and maybe even one day the pros. My rationale:

* You are a superb athlete but if you stay at running back the programs will make you gain upwards of 30 pounds. Not sure that fits your body type.
* College and pro offenses are going to more block first run second running backs with the pass happy approaches. That is not you, does not take advantages of your skills.
* You were incredibly effective as a wing back, lets face it somewhat less effective as an I back. Not too many if any college or pro programs are running the Wing T offense.
* Now on to the idea of focus on being a free safety - to go along with your incredible, natural athletic skills you have a tremendous feel for the game. Great vision, body control, recovery speed, and intelligent athleticism. Plus you have shown that you can lay a hit on a receiver too from the safety position. That is the epitome of a free safety.
* Football is inherently an injury ridden sport but the averages favor a free safety over a running back especially at the next levels.
* By playing free safety you can still take advantage of your other top notch skills - returning kicks and even punts.

Anyway, again follow your dreams. However, please consider my advice and I look forward to great success for you at the college and even the pro levels someday!!

Its called a birthmark asswipe, many people have them. Hell of a lot better than the tire tracks he has left permanently tattoed on Westfield's ass the last four years.

is it the 21-17 "asswhipping" you refer to in the region championship? the one where centreville never established anything on offense? or the 42-41 loss earlier in the season?

Nice, thoughtful letter. I have a better idea. Study hard, use your football name and connections to get some summer internships. Above all, graduate. Use your school, don't let them use you. So hit the books, have fun, stay out of trouble, and you'll be fine.

Looking forward to seeing where you decide to enroll. Go somewhere where you can play a lot.

Anyone know what the (phantom) unsportsmanlike call was agaist Richbourg? We could't figure it out at the game, I came home and watched my recording and didn't see anything but a good 'ol boy ref pull out his flag. What a game changer that was. Hard to believe anything could be called at that moment in that game unless a punch was thrown.

I think OL was the better team, but that call was huge. If they are at the 3, the kicker makes that FG, and who knows maybe Tutt's 80yd catch puts them in the lead instead of tying it up.

Have to admit, the offsides call on OL onside kick was pretty debatable too.

Usually when you can't "see" anything on the replay it means the player said something he shouldn't have to the ref. Also, Richbourg may have gotten his nuts grabbed and wasn't too happy about it. Walked with a little uncomfortable limp after that...

The 6A championship trophy currently resides in VA Beach. You failed to bring the championship home. I consider that a "choke" as well.

Westfield logic clearly.....keep on winning those regular season games and thinking you are a successful program.

Westfield would have lost by 30 to Ocean Lakes

Centreville, the Buffalo Bills of High School Football!! Haddock is an awful coach, that couldn't get it done with a great team. Yeah it's good to play in a state championship, but to lose twice, that is not a great "coach" by any means! His kids couldn't handle the grind of a long season, and that is coaching, year round, not when it is convenient for you!!

Haddock is a joke, and anyone that thinks he is the best coach in the region is absolutely insane. Coaching isn't all about getting great players to perform, it is getting great players to get it done and he didn't do that twice!! Hats off to Ocean Lakes, that was a team that was committed to the cause of winning.

Stop praising a loser, and start realizing he failed!! Let's see how good of a "coach" he is after losing 38 seniors!! Get it together NOVA FANS!!!

Great run Centreville. This has been some of the best football over the last few years any of else have seen. Don't let the trolls bother you, I'm sure the Westfield football players have much respect for you guys. Ocean Lakes was a great team. Great game, fought your hearts out. Best of luck to the ones going to the next level.

And for the Haddock haters. 6 seasons, 3 northern regions titles, 1 state champship. Go to hell lol.

Plus CVille has another state championship in tow....four trips, two titles No other team compares

History of other teams:

Westfield two titles but a lot of REAL REAL REAL Buffalo Bill like work in four straight regional title losses which is putting a big tarnish there.

Robinson three state trips 2 titles but getting to be many years ago

Lake Braddock - 1 state trip, no titles

Oakton - 2 state trips, one title

Chantilly 2 state trips, one title but also a distant memory

SOCO - a lot of pimping but nothing, oh forgot one trip as 5A but loss

Other teams????

Good analysis with state trips and wins. Hard to say any other team in Northern Region has had more top tier success than Centreville. Just look at the numbers. And I agree Westfield has been the Buffalo Bill act not Centreville. Four straight Region losses, come on talk about not getting it done....

From current 6A North teams:

Osbourn - 1 title in 2 trips
Battlefield - 1 title in 1 trip

I'm choosing to think the trolls on both sides are not typical of the fans of either team (CV-WF). For the most part I know the players and coaches have utmost respect for each other.

When Tyler Scanlon enrolled at Paul VI as a freshman in 2012, the two-sport athlete traded his desire to play football at Westfield High for the hope of developing his 6-foot-6 frame into a college-ready basketball prospect. Since then, the versatile forward has garnered offers from Fairfield, Rice and Toledo. But when his teammates departed in the summer, Scanlon elected to return to Westfield.

“Those guys had really become my brothers, so when they left, it became easier for me to go back to Westfield,” said Scanlon, who averaged 6.8 points as a part-time starter for Paul VI last season. “Once one left, the dominos began to tumble. We had won together, and we ended up leaving together.”

Defensive Play of the Year by the 6A North Defensive Player of the Year

The reason why A.J. Turner changed jerseys: the touchdown saving iron grip of James Gibson. The stop on Xavier Nickens-Yzer in the 2OT would be a close second. Army's getting a good one.

The answer is no - of course not. Just shows how hard it is to win a championship. Simmons has done this with a total of 3 lower tier D1 players over those 4 years. Some stats I saw elsewhere below - but if Simmons can keep Westfield in the hunt every year - sooner or later they'll break through. Stone Bridge / Westfield have taken some criticism for being in decline - but it is really more the rise in other programs than anything else (5A Briar Woods, Broad Run, Tuscarora / 6A Centreville, Lake Braddock). And quite frankly that makes it much more interesting.
