It doesn't matter what Westfield does, they can't beat Centreville. Centreville will destroy Westfield this year again! I just hope they get to play them twice.

As an Oakton fan, I agree with the posters that the conference, the region and the state are Centreville's to lose. Everyone else (and it pains me to say this) will be playing for runner-up status. They are too loaded and too good, and Haddock could take September and October off (hand the reins to some SYA coaches), and the Wildcats would still run the table.

As for my Cougars, they will be better than last year, but will likely be 6-4 heading into the playoffs, and they will lose in the first round. I hope they can keep the point spread against Centreville under 40.

It's hard to say. They lost their top three players from last season (all three D-I talent, but only one ended up going D-1), so I figure they will take a step back this season. They apparently got a highly touted Class of 2018 recruit from PG County at the QB position, but it's hard to know how much playing time he'll get as a freshman. Also helping them is that their schedule (especially OOC) is easier this year, so it's possible that they could finish the season 6-4, better than the last two years, even with less talent. I have heard, however, that they lost a number of talented kids from their class of 2017, who aren't coming back.

By the way, I think 6-4 is their ceiling this year. WCAC football is dominated by the "big four" -- Good Counsel, DeMatha, Gonzaga, and St. John's. It's been years since any other team has made their playoffs, and I don't see any prosect of that changing any time soon.

Looking at O'Connell's schedule I see them going 5-5 with wins over PVI, Ireton, St. Christopher, Fork Union, & Carroll. Worst case is 1-5 in the WCAC but with Carroll being the only win, but who knows how the season will go?

A 5-5 record (which would be the third year in a row they've gone 5-5) would be a good guess. In terms of the specific games you have predicted for them, they have a decent chance of beating MacNamara, though I would slightly favor Mac in that game. On the other hand, I think St. Christopher's would give them a better game than some might think St. Christoper's JV team beat O'Connell's JV team last year, and O' Connell's strength was their departed senior class.

I agree with you that PVI, Ireton, Fork Union, and Carroll are wins, and SJC, DeMatha, Gonzaga, and Good Counsel are losses.

Here is a topic I would love to read debated here. Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) from Lynchburg, associated with Liberty University has sued the VHSL to allow them to play their public school members. If they were to win and set the precedent, what do you think PVI, O'Connell, Flint Hill and others would do? Would it be fair to allow private schools to compete with public schools? Right now I don't think there is even a debate as to the best public school teams would destroy the privates; HOWEVER, you allow them to compete within the VHSL and play for State Championships and I think within a couple of years, the privates would dominate the conferences and be winning it all.

You allow Tom Verbanic at Flint Hill to recruit freely with a 5th year to offer a top player and you see how quickly he builds a national power.

Fair or Unfair?

Does the PIAA have any rules in place, such as no 5th year players allowed or transfer restrictions to keep kids from leaving their local high school team after their 4th year of eligibility to play for a private school that can offer them a 5th year? Do they play up in a conference to make up for the fact that they can recruit players? Are there any restrictions placed on the privates?

Saw some of their scrimmage last week against Hylton and was impressed with the QB, receivers and #44. That young man is the reason they will win a lot of games this season. As far as their O & D lines, very small and not too athletic. Hylton had a solid kid running the ball with their first teamers and a parent told me he was a Freshmen. Oakton will have problems this season with their run game on offense and stopping the run on defense. They will not match up well with a team like Centreville, Braddock or Westfield.

Final Score

Braddock: 28

Hayfield: 0

The rain began in the second half but Braddock was already largely ahead and no team gained an advantage from the rain. Braddock maybe threw the ball 3 times and scored 28 in 20 plays......Hayfield overhyped? Disorganized? not sure, but heard a lot about them being quote on quote "a pleasant surprise" "something to look out for". 5-5 once again i guess.

HF/LB scrimmage started an hour late, was delayed an hour at half and then ended with the mostly reserves in the game. LB scored twice on the first team. First time when they got the ball at about their 20 on a fumble. Second time on a long run by Lee, man that guy can fly. There were offensive penalties on the long run but they weren’t enforced since it was a scrimmage. LB struggled to move the ball other than a long run or two. HF drove the length of the field to the two yard line but couldn’t punch it in. Right before half, HF dropped a TD pass after driving to the LB 20. Not a blowout by any stretch of the imagination. Both teams are legit.

3 Hayfield drives moved the chains well. They were getting a lot of snaps but to be fair all of those drives had holding penalties on 3rd down completions(refs decided not to enforce penalties for whatever reason). LB had a long run that would've been negated by a "block in the back". You can argue the penalty one way or the other but you can't argue that Dejoun Lee(LB Running Back) ran past the entire Hayfield defense.....WOW HE IS FAST. To say either team struggled to move the ball more than the other would be false, it was raining beyond playable conditions for half of the game. Hayfield played sloppy and LB took advantage, discipline beat the non disciplined. Hayfield couldn't punch it in once in the red zone and LB did easily on 3 occasions. I guess that's what seperates 12-1 and 5-5

FWIW, Westfield did not look very good on defense against Dematha on the Friday scrimmage. They only forced a few punts and just did not look very fast and lots of broken tackles. Offense didn't score much gained a good bit of yardage. Evan Gray did not play (hurt?) - Westfield went to the passing game early and often. They've got some very tall new WR (like 6'5" I'm guessing) that showed some great hands.

West Springfield will be above .500 this year. They kicked the crap outta Oakton. Fast D, Good QB and a nice WR, with a shifty RB. I heard Oakton did much better against CD Hylton so not sure what that adds up to but WS will surprise some folks. Got em going 6-4. As far as Centreville beating them 100-0, Centreville could beat most teams in the state 100-0, they're pretty special.

You heard it here first, C-ville is not as special as everyone is saying, they will lose games this year.

You heard it here first, it does not matter who is at QB for SOCO, they will roll over everybody in that district.

SOCO overrated. Saw a mediocre Chantilly team drub them last year. Symms was what made that team go and he's gone. SOCO did not make the WP Top 20. They know.

well, they looked pretty good last night. beat WS 42-13. Could've put up 56 points but sometimes they make greedy decisions and take chances when it's not necessary. They can run the ball better than I've seen in a long time, and from what I've heard, the back up QB's and the starter who is injured aren't very far apart from each other in ability. Both backup QB's looked fine and completed passes

Lake Braddock covered the 20 point spread. I won $100.00.
My bookie is happy that there are college games today because Im sure I'll give all that money back and then some.

How did Soco, LB, and Hayfield look last night? They seem to be the best teams in the area

Either you are a troll or you just have been out of the area the last year. State champion Centreville with 16 returning starters is easily the best in NOVA with Westfield, Lake Braddock, and then maybe SOCO the next in line.

Get it straight please....

A head scratcher from the new Woodson coach...goes for two not once but twice with the same play, stopped both times. One of those kicks would have been enough to win but they lost in OT. And the kicker made a 41 yard FG, so yeah, it was a bonehead call...twice.

I agree the running game looked amazing last night but both quarterbacks looked shaky at best. Interceptions, fumbled snaps, etc... Without #3 and #2 they would've struggled on offense. I heard that the starter that's hurt has a great arm, hopefully he'll be able to play this season. The defense looks much improved from last season. SoCo could have a big year, just have to get past LB and Centreville.

What on earth would make you say Soco, LB and Hayfield seem to be the best teams in the area?

Apparently, yes. In fact, they won last weekend, v. South Lakes.

This was totally on the coaches. Centreville's secondary needed some speed to stop the big plays. Instead of playing their fastest safety, Nickens-Yzer, they left him on the bench. WTF?

To many losses from last year, particularly their star QB, Scott Walter. Probably the most underrated QB in the northern region in a long time.

Overall tackling was poor. Offensive line was average. Defensive secondary was terrible. And Ferrick is simply not Scott Walter. Some poor play calling as well.

On the good side, Richbourg was surprisingly good replacing Boose at times. Tutt looked great on his return, although I don't understand why he let the kicker take him out of bounds. (That's just a stutter step, and then hit the gas. Wasted precious time.) Boose also looked terrific, when got some room to maneuver.

Overall, very disappointing. This is not the 2013 Centreville team. The 2013 team was the best team in the country, period. They would have demolished Gonzaga and beaten the 2013 Booker T. Washington team.

This 2014 team has been living off the 2013 team's reputation. They need to find themselves quick or they won't make it back to the state championship. The rest of the northern region was watching and they are waiting to pounce.

Please. VA football is a joke on the national stage until someone beats a quality out-of-state team.

Hayfield was slow to score and had lousy play calling. Way too many incomplete passes and interceptions. Really too bad since the kids are clearly talented -- maybe the collective ego-mass (new head coach) will figure out how to harness it. SoCo inflicted 4 or 5 injuries on Hayfield and simply out played them with better coaching and probably less talented kids.

South County 37 - Hayfield 31
QB, WR both set school records. The quarterback threw for over 350 yards in his first varsity game. Not sure what expectations HawkEye has for school children. haha.

I saw an awesome pass vs. run game. Perhaps in a rematch Hayfield wins, perhaps not. Either way, both teams have bright futures.
