Police charged Dan Hegarty, 39, of 6003 Pratt Street in Alexandria with indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15 in reference to the November 10 incident at Spring Hill Recreation Center. Hegarty turned himself in at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday, November 25 around 5 p.m. He was identified with the assistance from the public after flyers and a composite sketch were distributed. Anyone that may have had similar contact with this suspect is asked to contact police at 703-691-2131.

Police are investigating a report of an 8-year-old McLean boy that was approached and touched by a naked man in the locker room of the Spring Hill Recreation Center at 8:30 p.m. Monday, November 10.

The child had gone to change after swimming, when a man allegedly approached him and touched him in a sexual manner. The child reported the incident to his parents later that evening. The victim was not injured.

The suspect is described as approximately 6 feet tall, slender, in his late 30’s with a tanned or olive-toned complexion.

These sorts of perverts totally confuse me.

First, how does an 8 year old boy turn on anyone, male or female? Or an 8 year old girl, for that matter. How would an 8 year old boy turn on an 8 year old girl, even?

Second, ignoring the fact that it is incomprehensible in the first place, why would a 39 year old man, and a teacher, no less, ACT on such feelings or urges? Even if he gets away with it one time or another, sooner or later the guy is going to get caught, and when he does, he's going to spend some time in prison. Doesn't he know what prisoners do to child molesters? Many don't come out of prison alive.

I hope this was all some sort of misunderstanding (for both the child's and the alleged pervert's sake) and if it wasn't, well, Dan Hegarty is probably going to meet a guy like Christopher Scarver when he gets to prison.

Where does he teach? He doesn't look that weird, just looks gay.

Interesting... I GOOGLE'd "Dan Hegarty Charges Dismissed" and didn't turn up with anything what-so-ever. Personally, if I were the parent of a child who attended the school where this guy is/was employed, I'd like to be able to find some information about why the charges against this guy didn't stick. I was just thinking about that...

Firtly, let me state that I'm not defending anybody... I don't know if Dan Hegarty assaulted that boy, or any boy for that matter, or not. Me personally, I feel that sexual predators don't belong in our society, whether they prey upon adults or children. If an individual is found guilty in a court of law for rape or molestation he or she ought to receive the death penalty. And I don't say that out of anger or anything like that. This is based on numbers, and nothing else. Look up the recidivism rate for sex offenders and you'll understand what I mean.

But that's just me, and I don't take issue with others who believe differently.

Now, to the point... The media, as I'm sure others of you have observed, will jump all over a story about a teacher molesting a student. Take Debra LaFave, for example. TOTAL COVERAGE. Arrest, trial, confession/guilty verdict, the relationship she and her student had, her personal history, and her sentence. Now, take this guy Dan Hegarty... Lots of coverage of the alleged assault, and his arrest... But I can't find a damn thing about the case being dismissed... For the sake of argument (and I'm not saying he WAS innocent, this is just a hypothetical argument) let's say that this guy didn't commit the crime he was accused of, and a court of law let him go... In the public eye, he's a child molester. And believe me, there are plenty of folks out there who feel the same way about child molesters and rapists that I do. Probably living on his block. Probably his next-door neighbors. Its safe to say that he's in pretty serious danger here.

I don't think the media considers these things when they write stories. Unless you happen to be O.J. Simpson, your acquittal just doesn't seem to have a very high order of probability of being published. I guess the reason he got so much coverage was that everybody (except certain members of the jury) knew he was guilty.

Anyway, I just try not to react too much to stuff I read or hear in the news... Unless of course the verdict is guilty at which time I write another series of letters to various senators and congressmen asking them to consider the death penalty for rapists and child molesters.

I submitted a tip to one of the local news stations suggesting that they check and see if the charges were in fact dropped.

Mr. Hegarty was not cleared by any stretch of the imagination. The charges in this case were reduced to avoid the need for the little boy's testimony. Mr. Hegarty entered an Alford plea; the judge in the case made his disgust clear. Transcripts of the disposition/sentencing hrg were created in recent weeks for other purposes, and can be obtained at the courthouse.

He used to teach at my school. He used to go around in Math and give people massages. He was weird. It always seemed like he was standing too close to you.

Mr. Hegarty is the victim here.

While it's appropriate to investigate any kind of impropriety, Mr. Hegarty has worked with children (including my own) for 20 years without a single complaint.

It's unfortunate that so many have the take the safe PC road and I hope that in time Mr. Hegarty's reputation will be completely restored; else, we are worse as a nation.

In a situation like this everyone has an angle and it's important to let action speak louder than words and Mr. Hegarty's actions have proven him a person of impeccable character.

Literally hundreds of parents and kids (now adults themselves) came to his defense. It's too bad that this information is harder to find than the worst fears of someone who doesn't know the situation first hand.
