Campaign Yard Sign Relevance?

Obama/Biden carried the Dranesville District in 2008 56% to 44%. Driving/walking around over the last few weeks, I'd say Romney/Ryan yard signs outnumber Obama/Biden at least 5 to 1, maybe more.

Will be interesting to see how the returns come in, at least in my neck of the woods.

Signs may be able to gague the enthusiasm (or budget) of the various campaigns but that's probably about it.

I think Obummer is cooked in Virginia, hopefully nationally too.

In my neighborhood there is literally a sign battle. I live in a middle income neighborhood. Houses are $300 - $400k. I would have assumed it would be heavily Obama. I was dead wrong. On one street in particular 90% of the homes have a sign in the yard. 15 houses on the street. 12 with signs. 9 for Romney 3 for Obama. Yes I counted. It got to be pretty funny. Everyday on this hill a new sign would appear. Now the owners move the signs. Don't remember this turf war going on ever before.

I'm around the area a lot. Definitely a much higher percentage of Romney/Ryan/Perkins signs however you want to read that.

I can tell you in Great Falls it is Romney/Ryan by like 10 to 1. Georgetown Pike is one long Romney/Ryan sign. The 4'x6' signs seem to be real popular. There is one on the way into the village with a empty chair next to it - pretty funny.

My one observation. There seems to be a lack of Allen signs.

True. I, for one, may either sit that race out or hold my nose begrudgingly and vote for Allen. I have a Romney sign in my yard, but refuse to put an Allen one there.

I think Romney will win VA, but in order for Allen to win, Romney will need to win by at least 4% for there to be strong enough coattails to sweep Allen in as well.

I've seen quite a few. They seem to all pop up in batches for whatever side.

i honestly don't get it. it's not like anybody's mind is going to be changed by these signs. it's like opining here or on facebook -- i'm guilty of it too, but it's kind of pointless.

Actually, it is quite useful. It tells me which of my neighbors are major douchebags and which of them I don't want my children to associate with their children.

Campaign signs are not votes. They may have limited use for helping to determine enthusiasm, but Romney/Ryan had a big sign push, whereas the Obama signs were harder to get and not widely available in local offices like in 2008.

If anything, you might worry that folks on the fence will be overconfident in a win because of the signs and end up not voting. But really, the signs don't vote, unless they have valid ID.

What am I in denial about?

It is not the year 2000 anymore. Obama will still win Fairfax County. Romney will not win the Dranesville District 5 to 1.

And Romney is leading in Virginia at the moment.

Political yard signs have limited usefulness in determining anything.

I don't think the numbers of signs mean anything.

I have tons of neighbors and acquaintances that I know well enough to know if they lean right or left. Very few of the libs I know have signs in their yards. The righties are much more likely to, and the farther right they are, the more and bigger the signs are. One guy in the 'hood even makes his own signs that highlight right wing talking points and/or whatever nonsense Limbaugh/Beck spewed that day. The signs change every day or two. Apparently the signs get vandalaized, so this moron makes another sign that says, "You can vandalize my signs, BUT YOU CAN'T SILENCE ME!!!". What a fucking goofball.

And like the guy up there ^ said, who the hell ever decided who to vote for based on a fucking yard sign? But the wingnuts, in all their zealotry, apparently think if you put up enough signs, the masses will vote for their guy. Idiots.

Agree with cvhk. Romney campaign is giving away yard signs and other swag around here like Halloween candy. I know an Obama supporter who had to go through a friend of a friend to get a yard sign. A switch from 2008 in a real swing state.

Exactly right. Obama made it very difficult to get yard signs this year, hell it took 3 weeks to just get a bumper sticker in the mail. It's not indiciative of the state, because Romney yard signs do outnumber Obama probably close to 10 to 1, Romney ain't winning VA in a landslide it will be close. It would be nice to have made yard signs better available, but the way Obama is dominating this debate makes me feel very confident he will take this election regardless of the billion Romney yard signs printed out.

Ahhh bullshit. Both of my neighbors have them as well as some of my family.

VA's in play. There's no shortage of signs here.

Ok, so the Romney campaign has plenty of yard signs for everyone and the Obama campaign didn't get their order in with Kinko's in time, so what? Just because there is plenty of Romney signs available doesn't mean people are voluntarily going to put them up in their yard. The whole yard sign thing is just a way to broadcast your vote to everyone driving by.

There were a lot more Obama yard signs than McCain signs in my neighborhood in '08 and now I'm seeing a ton more Romney signs. I think Romney's going to easily carry Fairfax county and therefore the state.

Depends how many illegals SEIU can bus to the polls.

Maybe I'll swing by the Safeway parking lot that morning and get a good vid.

It seems like yard signs are really about who is more disgruntled.

In 2008, we saw so many Obama signs because people were disgruntled about Bush, and projected that onto McCain (it also didn't help that a lot of people were annoyed with the whole palin circus)

This time around, you've got legions of retirees who keep Fox News tuned in and turned up every waking hour in every room of their homes, so they have an outsized impression of doom and gloom. So they are angry at Obama for destroying the economy and being socialist or some other bugaboo.

Another thing I noticed, at least in my neighborhood, is that the only place you see any Obama signs is near the house that has a Romney sign. Sort of like some silly campaign sign arms race.

I know Fox News has an outsized influence. In 2000 my Mother liked McCain (I liked him back then, too) and she went out and got a sign. I was shocked when I visited, to see a political sign in their yard. When my father got home, he took it up and put it in the garage. Not because he was against McCain, but because he believed it was inappropriate to advertise your political views. He retired in 2007 and began watching Fox News all day every day. I went over to visit in July, and his yard was decorated with Romney, Allen and some other republican candidate signs. This was a guy who wouldn't let my mother display her support for McCain in 2000, and now he is frothing mad at Obama and sending money to Romney and doing the whole angry old man thing.
