It seems like yard signs are really about who is more disgruntled.
In 2008, we saw so many Obama signs because people were disgruntled about Bush, and projected that onto McCain (it also didn't help that a lot of people were annoyed with the whole palin circus)
This time around, you've got legions of retirees who keep Fox News tuned in and turned up every waking hour in every room of their homes, so they have an outsized impression of doom and gloom. So they are angry at Obama for destroying the economy and being socialist or some other bugaboo.
Another thing I noticed, at least in my neighborhood, is that the only place you see any Obama signs is near the house that has a Romney sign. Sort of like some silly campaign sign arms race.
I know Fox News has an outsized influence. In 2000 my Mother liked McCain (I liked him back then, too) and she went out and got a sign. I was shocked when I visited, to see a political sign in their yard. When my father got home, he took it up and put it in the garage. Not because he was against McCain, but because he believed it was inappropriate to advertise your political views. He retired in 2007 and began watching Fox News all day every day. I went over to visit in July, and his yard was decorated with Romney, Allen and some other republican candidate signs. This was a guy who wouldn't let my mother display her support for McCain in 2000, and now he is frothing mad at Obama and sending money to Romney and doing the whole angry old man thing.
