They're not "special" in the sense that they're immune to political failures in their government that causes them to either not be paid, not paid a "fair" wage, or not get a pay raise if it's deserved.

The challenge is getting the taxpayers in the community to attend school board meetings and meetings in other areas of government. Once they attend, they need to be asking the right questions and applying real political pressure on their elected officials to streamline government costs. They need to streamline government costs by sorting out the essential from the non-essential. If it's non-essential, then we need to figure out if can be done OUTSIDE of government so we don't need tax revenue to pay for it. If it's essential, then we need to figure out what is working, what is not working, and eliminate or reform what is not working in manner that lowers cost to the taxpayer AND provides better quality.

I seriously believe we can cut costs AND improve the community at the same time.

I don't believe that spending more money always improves quality. And I don't believe that cutting costs always lowers quality.

But since reforming our government requires REAL WORK and CREATIVE THINKING from citizens who might lack that ability, then the best answer the citizens are able to come up with is "Fuck you!"...

So you are saying people are making a rational decision to stay - they have an expected future benefit (a pension) and are avoiding current costs (moving), and in that calculation accept no pay raise. That is a completely rational choice, as is the FCPS decision to not issue raises. I'm sure someone in FCPS has a spreadsheet that shows the cost of raises versus the cost of turnover. And I can pretty much guarantee if FCPS could put forward an analysis that it costs more in turnover to not give people a raise, they would have long ago.

Life is a series of trade offs. Making a living off other people's taxes means you will almost inevitably see pay freezes when economic times are bad. Teachers, cops, etc. either go into that with their eyes open or are willfully ignorant. The alternative is to end up like Detroit, where no one was ever affected by economic realities...until one day they were, and now not only are the jobs gone, so are the pensions, and the citizens too. The entitlement state collapsed into bankruptcy. Want that for Fairfax? Spend money you don't have.

There's an old saying "The best way to stop a bad habit is to never begin it". Spending money we don't have on raises we cannot afford is exactly what has put all of the other municipalities that are bankrupt or near bankrupt in that place.

I started counting up the board representatives and reply after reply like goop and blow me.

"Ryan McElveen still thinks he is in high school."
The biggest nutter on the board. This fruitcake student govt rep and his internalization-this and global citizen-that is cukoo for cocoa puffs. How he got into office we'll never know but we need to make damn sure it never ever ever happens again.

"Kaufax can go back to running her import export business."
Her rambling niceties are pleasant but has there been a board elected rep empty of more substance?

"Velkoff can go back to being a beltway bandit, Moon can go back to the practice of law and Reed never should have been in there in the first place. What's-his-name can look for a full time job impersonating Lincoln."
Velfkoff = Useless.
Reed = Dum as a bocks of rox.
Stork = meh. no opinion, which isn't bad but isn't good either.

Hines from Hunter Mill? Most radical socialist board rep - ever?

Janie Strauss? 20 - twenty - years as rep. 'nuf said.

Kathy Smith. shudder. voted against it, but couldn't figure out motive. most damaging plotter? maybe worst of all?

Schultz said funding for the board would have the reps come after our wallets and jack up our taxes. Breath of fresh air.

Who's left? nothing impressionable comes to mind, but that's not 12 so there's a few more.

blow me tammy kaufax says Ryan McElveen is the resident high school student on the board.

FairfaxSweetFairfax says Ryan McElveen is cukoo for cocoa puffs.

I say it's on. A toss up. Ryan vs. Ted for loony tunes school board member.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws2xihA6stg

start around 1:29 for about 10 minutes if you can stomach wretched representation and Hynes' moment if education is a women's issues adds a special barf factor.

Good for Reed and Schultz to say what a waste of the School Board's time.

Gatehouse staff ensure that family members get bumped to the front of the line for administrative jobs. Cluster Assistant Supt Linda Burke made sure her husband Larry was moved to the head of the line for an elementary school principalship and then hired in a cushy Gatehouse job soon after that. I guess that since Linda knows where all the bodies are buried, she can have anything she wants. So happy that Linda and Larry are extracting $300K annually in salary from FCPS. Just hope they can hold on for a few more years to fully fund their retirement coffers

I was arguing on a different post trying to defend Shultz. She's one of the few voices of sanity on the school board; based on 15+ hours of school board video footage I watched.

Ryan McEelven is a young social idealist who has no understanding of the real world because he's never worked in one. Just take a look at his bio:
"Researcher for The Brookings Institution John Thornton China Center. Master’s of International Affairs, Human Rights, Columbia University; B.A., Anthropology and East Asian Studies, The University of Virginia. Student advocate, advocate of curriculum internationalization and academic freedom, and experienced manager of educational institutions abroad. Speaks Mandarin Chinese (including Sichuan dialect), Spanish and conversational Korean. FCPS graduate (president, Marshall High School Class of 2004). Board service January 2012 to present." (http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/members/at-large2.shtml)

His career so far SCREAMS.. "social idealst", "policy wonk", "academic", and "career politician"...

Don't expect this guy to cut wasteful costs at FCPS and lower school taxes. This type of guy why cry and bitch about every "precious" dime that's cut.
