Keep your mouth shut and smile and nod for the first year. Be there on time every day and do anything you are told.

On day 366 you can relax.

Not joking.

Leave your motivation at home.

We don't need any new guys making us look bad.

I recommend that you immediately find a job in the 510 series and don't get pigeon holed as a 511, especially if you're IG.

Good job on getting in....now sit back and expect a career of hanging out in the cafeteria, surfing the net, reading the newspaper and chatting with co workers on who's vegitable garden is best. Oh, and don't worry the Govt paychecks roll in every two weeks. This is the best when we get shut down....we still get paid....I LOVE CLUB FED

Welcome! I love my job, I go to work stoned to make things more interesting, it gets boring otherwise. The Pay is fair considering the work load, a lot of my friends make more then me, but they are much more stressed out.

You've just become a cog in a machine. Look at the people who have been there 5, 10, 20, 30 years and that will be you as you grow older. If you ever want to get into private industry, no one will want you because of the government worker stigma.

When they put up those motivational posters praising gays, women and minorities just nod politely in agreement. Keep your mouth shut and you will do just fine.

Keep your head down until the probation period is over. After that it is smooth sailing. You will have tenure like employment. Unless you just dont show up for work at all or you are given more than a year in jail you will not be fired.

Same goes on their promotions even though you're way more qualified.

Strange thing though is the probationary period is for two years...maybe because it's a recent grad program?

Still, sounds like smooth sailing after the probationary period.

When you set up your TSP, do an absolute minumum of the matching 5% level, more if you can handle it. Set it up with the Roth option so you pay the taxes up front. Throw it in the C or S fund and don't look at your statements for thirty years. C fund is up 9% since inception which beats inflation. S fund will probably have greater returns, but its data only goes back a decade.

OPM regs, you are tenure after three years, but you have merit system protection at the end of the regular shift ending the last work day prior to your start date your first year.
