You know the Dulles Greenway.

No, I think some Australian company owns it.

No, its a shady company in Australia. Those fuckers would raise the rates to 12.00 if given the chance. I try to avoid the road as much as I can.

Its the very definition of "highway robbery".

Greenway run by private company, rates are double per mile than that run by defacto government portion

The private industry a market solution!

^Right on!^ Private industry is ALWAYS more efficient than the gubbermint.

I'm confident that the Greenway owners wouldn't screw me. I'll gladly pay whatever they think their "product" is worth!

Good investment granted how often tolls are increased. I don't recall how the original transaction went down, but they would have been better served by selling shares to the general public.

It's fucking ridiculous that there is basically one toll rate, $5 or whatever it is, no matter how far you go. Whether you go one exit or the whole length from IAD to Leesburg, you pay the astronomical toll. I rarely go the whole length, but I do so maybe twice a year. There have been times where it would be so convenient to go an exit or two, but that's not happening. There's no reason they can't put up some gantries at the exit ramps and do distance-based tolling for EZPass holders.

The Greenway is a bargain!

Every time I drive on it, I thank God that our corrupt and inept government is not running it!

You will notice, if you drive the Greenway, that the roadway is smooth since it has been repaved recently and has few, if any potholes. The speed limit is 65, and you will typically be able to drive at that speed becuase the road has three lanes and traffic is rarely heavy. If it snows, the road is plowed immediatley.

No other roads that go from Dulles to Leesburg have these features. I would say that makes it more efficient then the other roads which are maintained by the state.

Nobody is forcing you to drive the Greenway and pay the toll. If you think the benefits are not worth the price, you do not have to drive on the road. The state even provides a nearly paralell road, Route 7, which you can take if you do not wish to take the Greenway. So why does the high price bother you so much?

If the toll road was $50 to use, all of you cheerleading losers would use it?

At what point do your views take a back seat to common sense?

The answer is never for these corporate fellating cunts. Ideology doesn't require common sense nor a sense of self awareness. These are the same dumbshits with the tea party license plates that drive to their government financed contracting jobs or even to their government jobs without the least bit of irony. Because the toll road isn't something they use so why can't the Aussies fuck commuters over. The old fuck you- I got mine mindset.

I only use it once a year if that, so I pay whatever it costs for convenience. If I needed to use it daily, I would be very unhappy with the cost. The alternate route really sucks. Who pays for snow removal, maintenance, etc of the road?

Same here, I rarely take it to work and I live right next to the Greenway. It would cut my time in half to work, but I most of the time take Route 7 instead. Here is the rub, there is a double dicking with not only some private Aussies company highway robbing, but also the Airport authority nailing you on both ends with tolls and an airport police who spend all day pretending they are state troopers and writing tickets to generate revenue. Actually thats not double dicking but all three holes filled. And here comes the one guy to jack off over the whole scene as the state does indeed maintain the Greenway as they have a maintenance yard right next to the Greenway in Ashburn and you'll see state trucks lined up like the rockettes along the Greenway to plow during snowstorms. State troopers still patrol it like a state road. So no, its not some wonderful example of how private enterprise is so awesome, Randroids. This is an example of a corporate entity fucking over the state taxpayer because our government be it Federal, state, or local is hopelessly corrupt and/or incompetent. The state built it with tax money and then basically sold the rights to collect tolls on it to some corporate probably for hookers and blow for the governor while still maintaining it for them. I'm sure the Aussies have to pay some sort of annual "maintenance fee"," but I doubt it covers the full costs to the state. When you look at that road from Leesburg all the way down to I-66 is one gigantic money suck.

Either you quoted me by mistake or you can't fucking read.

I'll say it again. I'll gladly pay whatever the Greenway owners want to charge.

What is funny is the anti-tax, so called Republicans who like to use the Greenway as a populist punching bag. Guys like Frank Wolf who were around when it was built and probably thought it was a great idea to use a "market" solution rather than government. Beat up the road for being expensive, offer no solutions. Then go support HOT Lanes.

I drive the entire distance of the toll road 5 days a week, and can either take 28 for a couple miles to get to Ashburn, or I pay $5 +/- to take the Greenway for 2 exits. For me, I cannot justify spending 5 dollars to cut 5 minutes of time off my morning commute. I am already spending $40 a week minimum in gas money, plus $2 for the 'regular tolls' each way and each day, which may not sound like a lot but does add up over time. Taking the Greenway only makes sense if you have to travel out to Leesburg. Time does equal money, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't equal THAT much money.

So if they one day decide to jack the tolls up to $18, you'll pay?

Boy, you Libertarians are about as dumb as you are crazy.

Why is anyone bitching about the price? It's a private road. Just because it's there and it's a road doesn't give everyone the right to it. No one is being fleeced, there are other 'no toll' alternatives. The landowners sold or leased their land for it to be built. It's an alternative to the public road system. It's a convenience that costs money and those who can afford it can use it. Those who cannot afford it can take rts 7 and 28. If the owners want to jack the price up to $20 and people will pay, they should go for it. You don't think you have a right to take a vehicle because you see it in a parking lot, why should this be different?

What I don't like is the low 65 mph speed limit and the cops enforcing it on that road. Traffic laws should not apply there, just like on a race track. I'm not saying there should be anarchy or no limit. The road can have rules and if you are caught breaking them, you can be fined or banned from the road, like any other private activity.

How is that ironic? Isn't that ultimately the definition of a Libertarian? Pay as you go.

It's ironic because, by definition, a toll is a tax and Libertarians are against ALL forms of taxes.

Taxes are pay as you go. Inheritance taxes of course, but also sales and excise taxes collected at the point of sale. Then there's income and payroll taxes for things that don't have a point of sale. Those just get regularly deducted from your paycheck.

Libertarians? Those are actually just cuckoo people. A society directly implies taxes, just as a golf (or any other) club directly implies membership fees. An organizing and/or governing body cannot function without funding. People who believe otherwise have all the sense of a three-year old.

Libertarians, like 99% of Liberal Democrats, do not known the meaning of reality.

It very likely is run more efficiently. You just don't directly see the true cost of other roads that you drive. If it didn't provide some value beyond the cost that makes it worth doing, then it wouldn't be there or you'd be paying for the cost otherwise. What profit they may make is independent of how efficiently it's built and operated from your standpoint. They have to run it efficiently from their own; otherwise, there isn't the profit to make it worthwhile.

VDOT didn't want to help build the airport road to Dulles back in the 50's so the Federal Govt built it alone by creating a road with no exits. VDOT finally realized their mistake and built the Toll Road in the 70's. Fast forward 60 years and the tax revenue alone would of paid for that road 200 times...

VDOT didn't want to build the Greenway in the 80's. In comes private industry who had to sell it to an Austrian company. After Loundon boomed now VDOT wants to buy it from the Australian firm.

Don't you just love Gooberment?
