part of the problem has to do with with the modern day mentality of the younger teachers. many went to the "top three" va colleges, couldn't hack it in any major, resorted to teaching, then become employed in the system and reinforce the inbred county mentality where one should be worshipped if one attended college at the "top three". these young teachers are so full of themselves and they are miserable teachers. they are arrogant and believe it or not, some are outright dumb. they think they are entitled to judge students and they think they are capable of guiding our students when they have spent zero/nada/no time in industry. they persuade students to take curriculums that do not match a student's interest or post high school program of study. so, continue to promote the cloning mentality and watch the percentage drop further. this is not to take away from the MANY dedicated qualified teaachers who work so hard.

You can't really fall into teaching and just leave with a degree at this point. For example, at JMU you now get an undergrad in your specific field followed by a masters in education. Basically, these kids are getting at least 3 years worth of content knowledge followed by a masters in education - if anything these kids that are fresh out of school are actually more prepared than education majors coming out as recently as 10 years ago.

or you can graduate with liberal arts and get a teaching certificate when no other job offers appear. even with the masters, they can't shut up and stop talking about themselves and their glory days. i listened to one teacher talk about herself and all her family members that went to vt for over an hour. she never came up for air.
