Why is Sully station so close to Fair Oaks station?

I figured just over 7 miles and fair oaks station seems a far piece from mcLean station

why so many police cars in the parking lot? do officers use alternating cars each day they go out on patrol?

noticed the police academy out there in chantilly. didn't they use to have a firing range and school out on popes head road?

Did you notice the vehicles making illegal left turns into and out of the academy?

They really should change the road markings outside it - "failure to keep right" is the reckless driving charge for crossing those solid double lines.

Perhaps - just south of Dulles airport there's a BIG "firing range", among other things.

Zoom in to see the splendor:

Was thinking the police stations should be placed equi distances apart
to allow for adequate coverage especially in case of a big emergency

McLean station is sure a long ways from the Fair Oaks station

why are there so many police cars sitting in the parking lot? has the county spent too much money on cars?

wouldn't it have made more sense financially to have the police academy out on popes head road than build in a expensive part of the county where another office building could have been built and contribute to the tax base of the county?

Yep, and they search cars going into and out of there and have guard booths. Wonder what that is.

I assumed it was a training facility for county/state cops with some spill-over to feds. Maybe the other way around. Or maybe just feds.

If you view the same spot with local.live.com and zoom into birds-eye view you can see a number of folks shooting or listening to a lecture of some sort near the end of what appears to be "the rifle range"; lots of big black SUVs. Near the driving course are numerous hard-to-identify marked cars that MIGHT be county cops or some sort of feds.

It's the range, obstacle course and defensive driving course for fcpd. As a graduate of the citizens police academy we got to shoot and drive on graduation day.

Jack,

Police stations do not need to be exactly the same distance apart. The officers generally do not respond from there. Each officer is assigned an area and they patrol that area.

There are an excess of crusiers at each station at any given time. This is because they have three separate shifts and overlap on the coverage. This means a car that is out during the daytime is probably sitting idle at night. Generally speaking, two police officers share a cruiser. So that car moves daily but proably only during one of the assigned shift of each day.

Sully District was added a few years ago to support Clifton and Centreville which are far from Fair Oaks.

Don't forget that between Fair Oaks and McLean there is the Reston district near Reston Town Center.

The police academy moved several years ago to accomodate the growth of the department. The driving and shooting courses are located off Stonecroft Blvd along Dulles property. Very nice facility. Yes, Feds do train there as well as other agencies but it is a FCPD run facility and their officers have preference.

The old facility on Popes Head Road belongs to the Police Association and the old range was being used by K-9 for some of there training but the site is no longer suitable for recruit training.

Thanks for the info.

The Dulles site has a dog-training area of some sort:

You think all the taxes you pay go straight to the police department? It's up to the County/State government where the tax money goes. The training facilities that FCPD has is probably the best in the country if not world.

There never has to be logic. Look at the distances between McLean HS and Langley or Madison and Oakton.
