Looking for information on who enforces building codes, etc. regarding the number of available toilet facilities that are available for students in a FCPS elementary school. I'm looking at a school with 1100+ students with a capacity of seven toilets per floor per sex. With all the regulations out there regarding school oversight, there must be something about bathroom facilities.

Who needs toilets when you have turf? Maybe Tammy Kaufax will bring a porta potty over and hold a sheet around it or something.

Yeah, that would be great . . . the county says it doesn't have the money to do the plumbing for a modular with bathrooms and water fountains.

Maybe they can piss on the artificial turf.

Piss dissolves the turf, and it is expensive to clean.

Maybe if we got an Olympic size pool they could piss into that.

There is a Fairfax office called code compliance but it is largely for snitching on your neighbors. You could start there though. Don't know how they'd react to be called on a county building.

I'm under the distinct impression that as long as parents keep demanding stuff for sports and activities, that's where money will go first, and of course there's none left for even basic things like bathrooms.

First, review "Guidelines for School Facilities in Virginia's Public Schools", which is a general guide to how the facilities in schools should be set up. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/facility_construction/school_construction/regs_guidelines/guidelines.pdf

Second, review the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building code, which is available at http://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/index.php/va-building-codes/building-and-fire-codes/regulations/uniform-statewide-building-code-usbc.html

Note that the Virginia USBC generally is an amendment to the International Building Code (IBC), so you will need to have a copy of that document, as well. This is not free, so you will have to either buy a copy or use the copy in the City of Fairfax Regional Library.

Chapter 29 of the IBC 2000 states that educational facilities should have one water closet and lavatory for every 50 students. However, you need to refer to the 2009 edition of the IBC for current, correct information.

Once you've reviewed the code and have documentation of the violations, you should contact the Fairfax County Department of Code Compliance at 703-324-1300.

Actually, I'm neither of these. I am, however, vigilant of inequity in education. This might actually be something that Fairfax Coalition of the Silence might find of interest.
