My son works for a new restaurant in Fairfax City, he came home the other night with cash instead of a paycheck. When I asked him about it, he told me the owner of the store will give "cash advances". This isn't in the work handbook and my son is 17.

How and who do I report this to since it is a Franchise? It's a chain-restaurant so I'm sure there is someone higher than the actual store owner.

Why make such a crazy comment? The business is obligated to withhold taxes -- state and federal. Additionally, the employer has to pay their share into Social Security for the employee, and the employee has to pay their share, too.

If people work for just cash all their life, they really won't contribute into Social Security and then they'll never be able to retire.

* I'm not making any claims about the future of Social Security, nor am I implying that the Social Security benefit will be enough for most people to live off of after retirement. I'm just simply indicating what the polices are for today and now.

Back in the day we used to get paid in dope, saves on taxes and the boss gets the volume discount.

If this kid is coming home with cash he's slinging on the side.

I agree with you Que.......what an asshole..............be happy your kid is working so he can buy his weed. Not like its a career.

If it is a cash "advance" it might be perfectly fine. Since there is usually a delay in getting a paycheck, the employer might give a cash advance soon after the hours are actually worked but when the printed paycheck comes there will be a deduction from the net amount for amount already given in cash. Withholding, etc should still be shown as deducted/withheld from the gross pay on the paystub.

Did you ever think that just maybe your kid ISN'T really working at this so called restaurant but just tells you he is and really the cash he is being paid is from dealing drugs? Hmmmmmmm makes you think right. Is his cash all small bills?

He's probably making more money getting paid in cash, if he isn't really dealing. As far as not contributing to Social Security--so? Doubtful he'll ever see a dime of that anyway.
