RICHMOND, Va. - Governor Bob McDonnell announced on Thursday that Virginia will have its 6th annual back-to-school sales tax holiday the weekend of August 5. The sales tax exempt holiday will begin at 12:01 p.m. on Friday, August 5, and will end at midnight on Sunday, August 7. Most school supplies and clothing will be sales tax exempt, with the exception of computer supplies, sports and protective equipment, and some accessories.

The purpose of the sales tax exempt period is to relieve some of the economic stress of families preparing to send their students back to school. The back-to-school sales tax holiday this year is predicted to save shoppers an estimated $4.3 million dollars worth in sales tax.

School supplies items that have a selling price of $20 or less, and clothing and footwear at a selling price of $100 or less are sales tax exempt over this holiday. The number of sales tax-free items one can buy are unlimited, as long as the items qualify as tax exempt.

How “clothing” is defined for the purposes of the sales tax holiday excludes sports equipment, footwear, and protective gear that is meant to be used for athletic activity. These are items that are also not considered as everyday wear.

School art supplies, student tools to aid learning in a course, music supplies, and textbooks are included in the definition of “school supplies” for the purpose of the holiday.

Computer supplies and books that may be used for courses or extracurricular reading but are not textbooks are not included in how “school supplies” are defined for the purpose of this sales-tax holiday.

The sales tax holiday applies for all Virginians, not just those preparing their kids for school. All retailers in the state that sell designated tax-exempts supplies must participate in the holiday. School supply items do not need to be bought with the purpose of being used for school in order to quality for the sales tax exemption.

For more information, such as the parameters for returns, discounts and coupons, and a full list of items included in the sales tax holiday, visit www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=SchoolSuppliesAndClothingHoliday .
The website also contains a list of items excluded from the sales tax-free holiday weekend.

I remember a few years ago they capped it at $100.00 per purchase.
