Golden Age of Turf in Fairfax: What Can We Expect?
Posted by: Mr. Future ()

Now that the Board of Supervisors have foolishly approved the artificial turf, what next?

After all, the proponents of the project believe the turf is essential. There was a resolution in the report saying that the turf would benefit all County residents.

When do we start to see these benefits and what are they?

Ryan McElveen, Tammy Kaufax, and Patty Reed of the school board though these turf fields were a great idea. Somehow (most likely through the use of a poorly prepared "report") they cajoled the Board of Supervisors into paying for them.

The report extolled, vaguely, the benefits of these fields. I want to know what these benefits are when we might expect to see them, given that this is all being paid for with tax dollars.

And no, I am not retarded. I do, however, wonder about your reading comprehension.

We will see a less obese Fairfax for both children and adults. Thank you Fairfax leaders for providing our citizens with year round athletic opportunities!

How do I become less obese as a result of these fields? I'm not in high school.

The fields are open to all residents, simpleton. Although, in order to get to them, you'd have to leave mom's basement and we all know that ain't happening.

Stay fat, my friend.

Mr. Future (I know you're not really retarded)

Here are a few benefits based on what I've experienced over the last few years of playing on these fields regularly, but feel free to google for a complete list of pros/cons.

- Big upfront investment, but very low maintenance costs
- Games never get cancelled b/c the field is too wet
- Fields do not get destroyed by local people playing on them without permits. This also means park police don't have to monitor and kick these people off b/c they can't do any harm.
- Smooth surface is far superior for all sports
- Less injuries due to more consistent footing. what i mean by this is, on grass fields around here, they are never in good shape and never will be. People are much more susceptible to twisting ankles, knees, etc. when hitting rough spots or holes in the grass, puddles of water, etc.

That's all i can think of off the top of my head. Hope this helps.

Use of the high school fields is restricted to HS sports and user groups that may have contributed bucks toward construction. Theoretically, there might be a process to apply for a permit to use the fields, but the available time for years ahead has already been divvied up by written user agreements before construction is even started on most of these fields. That is the only reason club sports contribute. Open play is not going to happen.

There is ZERO chance that these funds will happen.

No way these boosters are stroking $100k, $200k and $400k checks

ZERO chance

Sure, they might jack up the field usage fee to $8, but that money was to be used for maintenance for the 60 fields we already have.

And for the idiot poster who claims no maintenance and damage--you are clueless.

I am out of here the day I retire. Good riddance, Fairfax tax colony.

You suckers can pay the debt/interest for the next 50 years.

I've called the two nearest schools and was told that use of the fields without permission is trespassing. They said only certain groups had permission to use the fields due to concerns about damage and THE EXPENSE OF MAINTAINING THE FIELDS.

I asked if I could just come to the fields to exercise and I was told no. I asked about the authorized groups and they said they are private clubs in Fairfax and I'd have to join one.

So it seems I am paying twice if I want to use these fields. It also seems even the fields are concerned about the cost of maintenance so I don't see where people get that they are maintenance free.

I work until 9 or 10 each night and like to run after work. I used to drive to the McLean HS track to run because there was enough available light to run most nights. Even that late most times there were other runners and walkers there. It was always open and there were no signs limiting use. Since the school installed artificial turf the fence is padlocked and even the track around the field is no longer available to the public.

And how does this turf benefit me?

So far,

Some user groups paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for turf fields in exchange for priority scheduling for them.

Theses groups raised their fees to cover the cost for the next ten years, which is the life of the agreement and the expected life of the turf.

Other groups are waiting for the new fields to be built, which they can then use for free.

Meanwhile, the county wants to raise the pay-to-play fee from $5.50 to $8.00 per player per season to help pay for the fields.

What can you expect to see?

These early adopters who have to pay their loans will go bankrupt as their players move to other groups who get free space and can charge lower fees.

Boosters providing less money to sports because they have to pay $15,000 per year to a turf replacement fund.

Heat stroke replacing concussions as the safety threat in the news.

Sports less organized than football wondering why the turf fields were not designed to better accommodate their sports.

But there is really nothing you can do. Money and political connections trump everything in this county.

According to the proposal, the Boosters will now shell out $20k=not $15k.

correct?

That extra 45k may not hurt a Westfield or Chantilly, but will impact a Falls Church or Mt Vernon.

The college games I have been to, often have sprinklers and they wet the field down during quarters to cool off the surface. Don't see that happening on high school fields.

Ther is no FREE TIME for turf--clubs are fighting over field use. To say that they are available to the public is a lie.

You should send an email to your BOS rep and ask why you can't use the track?

Denying tax payers the right to use these athletic fields that our tax dollars paid for is pathetic.

I mean just last weekend I want down to the local fire station and they would not let me put on a fire helmet and drive the fire truck around my neighborhood blowing the siren, EVEN THOUGH MY DAMN TAXES PAID FOR ALL THAT STUFF!!!

The nerve.

I will complain just to go on record; I really don't think anything will change. It would be nice to get something for my tax dollars that go to FCPS since I don't have any kids.

I was told today that the local school is building a higher fence to keep people off the turf and also going to add extra security. They said the turf is fragile, can only be played on with a coach's supervision. They said they had concerns about damage by inexperienced players.

And the fields aren't open to the public. She told me I should go to a park because going on school property is trespassing.

I think the taxpayers have been had.

Last night Fairfax County got all their games in. But look who had to reschedule:

Battlefield @ Freedom (Prince William) -- Saturday 8pm
Gar-Field @ Osbourn (Manassas) -- Saturday 730pm
Forest Park @ Stonewall Jackson (Manassas) -- Saturday 730pm

Good luck finding something other than swatting mosquitos to do in your new low-tax shangri-la.

Maybe football played --in the lightning--but field hockey was cancelled.

Must be a bunch of softie, cradle-to-grave, nanny-state liberals in charge of field hockey.

We were told that you can play on these fields no matter what.....rain, sleet, hurricanes, flash floods, tsunamis...

These fields are designed for any kind of weather.

What about you?? These fields are the greatest fucking thing to ever happen to your butthurt fucking life. These fields give you the oppurtunity to go on the internet and anonymously post about how other people are so stupid and about how you are so scary smart, your number one goal in the sad existence you call a life.

Well, the Turf Task Force contains nothing less than a RESOLUTION to the effect that the turf fields would benefit EVERY county resident. Was that hype, the truth, or what?

I have no problem with someone asking the County to make good on a promise.

I bet these fields aren't used by more than 15% of the county population.

And now, you can't even walk around the track.
