Why does Goodwill get away with selling counterfeit handbags?
Posted by: RobbieRDobb ()
Date: September 06, 2013 04:34PM

Everytime I go into Goodwill they have at least 3 counterfeit designer items in the display case, sometimes up to 10. They know they are fake, and if they knew it was real they would auction it on their website. These bags and shoes go for up to $40. I live close-by and visit often. Everytime I come in, a new crop of fake designer goods. Obviously fake for the most part. Sometimes a look inside will be needed to confirm. They know it, no excuse. They are making about $2,000 a week selling fake..counterfeit ILLEGAL blackmarket items...

They might get away with taking free merchandise, working disabled people hard for 30 cents an hour and paying their CEO's hundreds of thousands a year, this they should not.

Incidentally, World Goodwill is run by the Lucis trust....

I think they are making even more than that and I believe that is the responsibility of law enforcement. New York is about to pass a law to make purchasing fake handbags a $1,000 fine and even possible jailtime.

Lucis Trust, used to be the Lucifer trust but was renamed for obvious reasons. Yes, they are the ones behind Goodwill and its hardly an American or Christian organization. Its all online.

Now, they are even trying to get your spare change too when you check out.Better to find used items on Ebay.

Wasn't talking about Coach & you actually can find an authentic very used coach for that price there... Coach actually has a very low resale value. I'm talking about all the Gucci, Louis V etc...

No one else in this town would get away with selling Blackmarket items in a store and neither should they.

I suspect that if the problem disturbed you that much you would cease patronage of Goodwill. You do, so they do.

I knew I'd hear that one! I don't cease patronage of Federal Reserve notes either. The fake Louis V bags need to go, its in incredibly bad taste. And ILLEGAL... Gee Whiz. If someone donated bootlegged movies to me and I sold them, I'd be jail... Just lose the fake bags, quit being so damn greedy. Throw the crap away instead of selling it!

Since Goodwill relies on donations from the public, maybe they are not expected to authenticate designer donated items. They have so much inventory it would be impossible to authenticate every pair of shoes, purses, wallets, designer jeans, jewelry, etc.

+1

I can't imagine getting agitated about this. Do you think that the shoppers at Goodwill can differentiate between the value of a Coach bag and a Louis Vuitton? The few that can should be able to spot a fake. The rest just don't care.

In any case, I wouldn't blame the staff at Goodwill.

Yeah, because it's important that we preserve the integrity of the products from a company that sells vinyl bags with some tacky initials on it made some poor schmucks who'd have to work for a year just to make what they charge for one bag which wannabe posers pay way too much money for. lol

Heres a ladie's experience...

The Coach hand bag is brand new and it has the a tag saying Coach made in Italy and its price is $75 which is really high comparing to their handbags which they go for $4 to $10 maximum
And I bought Louis Vuitton brand new for $50 with a tag saying made in France
And the employee there told me they are real
when I went I found out that both are fake and I can't even sell them anywhere
When I went back there the manager refused to return or exchange them
I'm very pissed can I sue goodwill for selling fake replica brand saying that they are real and pricing them really high like if they are authentic?

THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY'RE DOING!

To the poster that thinks shoppers at Goodwill can't differentiate fake from real designer wares.... you're the idiot! You must think only poor people are shopping there. Wrong again. If you visit Goodwills auction site, people are spending hundreds and even thousands on a single auction item... usually Tiffany & Co or Omega and other designer products. When someone spends $50 or $800 on something they believe to be the "real deal", they should expect some accountability on the store's part. Ignorance of the law is not a defense. The store cannot claim "we didn't know". If you don't know you can't sell it. AND you certainly CAN NOT sell it on the auction site listed as it's brand name if it hasn't been authenticated. If they mail out across state lines a fake item, they also break federal laws.
So STOP making excuses for Goodwill, because it's Goodwill.
BTW, Goodwill is NOT a non-profit charity like Salvation Army. This is a FOR profit company that makes 100% profit on everything considered it is all donated.

Some of the Goodwill stores try harder than others. The Toledo OH store seems to have a significantly higher number of fakes than any of the others. The problem is that they are listing them as "Authentic" I was told by a store employee when I complained online via email that they have the Coach handbags authenticated at the local outlet store. I don't believe it. Even sales people would know the difference. Today they sold a fake coach bag for 40.00 that had a signature lining inside a signature bag, mismatched Cs, and an obviously fake tag.
People need to complain and shut this down because it hurts legitimate business.

"..hurts legitimate business." False.

At least 80% of people who buy counterfeit merchandise would NEVER buy the real thing at the much higher price if that's all there was anyway, just like downloaded movies and music. It's a specious argument.

How does ten $40 items a week add up to $2,000 a week?

I don't think Gooodwill should sell counterfeit goods as if they were worth more. I've seen many fake "Seven for all Mankind" jeans - used, for $45.

They are getting these jeans for the same price as other jeans which is FREE.

I just bought a "The North Face" jacket for $40 which i'm taking back tomorrow. It's a fake as well.

Talk about making something out of nothing. Didn't it ever occur to these people that if you want a Vuitton or Hermes handbag, you go to the Vuitton store or the Hermes store? And a handbag is just for throwing all your crap in so you can carry it around. What difference does it make if it is real or not. And bottom line, you are shopping at GOODWILL for christ's sake. You pays your money, you takes your chances. Next these people will want to start taking stuff back to the dollar store.

So you tried to buy a LV bag @ Goodwill for $50 so you could resell it for a profit, and then got caught trying to sell a fake bag and can't unload it.

You are an idiot for trying to buy things from Goodwill so you can resell them for a profit & a bigger idiot for thinking $50 for a LV is priced "high like it's real."

All around fail, stop trying to find someone to drag down into your fail-hole with you.

And think about this. You donate what you know is a fake LV bag to Goodwill, but on your income tax return you claim a charitable deduction for the price of a real one. That makes it worth it.

I have never seen fake coach in my goodwill stores but neither are the prices on the coach they have anywhere near 40$. they lock all the name brand shoes and purses in glass cases and sell them at prices between 120$-200. I found a pair of harley boots that they wanted 70$ for used on there which is a rip off because I can find better quality used harleys online for around 35-50. and you see the same purses in the glass case every time you go back because no one can afford the prices.

The OP is half-right in terms of Goodwill marking up an upscale purse if they aren't sure it's real. They do sell on Ebay, and if you are in the habit of listing counterfeit stuff as real, you are going to end up holding the bag, both literally and figuratively. Any seller on Ebay has to basically operate like a big box store, if you don't take returns or make refunds when you fuck up, or when the buyer fucks up, you can't play the game. Any buyer on Ebay can charge back via PP or any reason for up to 45 days. So, if Goodwill does indeed sell designer bags online which they have gotten as donations, whoever does the listing for the individual location has done some research. And if they are tossing the fakes into the local stores and asking more than a few dollars, I would question those ethics.

That said, if you think you are going to go to the Goodwill and start buying for resale items which are some of the most counterfeited items around, without knowing what you are doing, you are playing a fool's game . Ebay and other sites have pretty good buying guides that explain in detail the differences between fakes and the real deal. At the very least, if you don't know the stuff inside and out, bring along a smart phone and examine the stuff, take photos, do research on the fly, etc. Don't be in a hurry to splash out good money at a place that you know does not take returns for any reason. My advice, learn about things which aren't so readily counterfeited and stay away from things like LV purses, as most you see on the floor of a Goodwill store have already been vetted and are there for a reason.

Shit on occasion does fall through the cracks. Recently a friend, who shops at a place I can't stand with a passion, Unique, purchased a large mid-century silver plate bowl by a well known designer. 12 bucks. Sold on Ebay for well over a grand. It does still happen. There are no shortcuts for accumlated knowledge when it comes to selling on the secondary market. Today there are tools to let one compile the information faster and have it on hand if isn't already locked down in your brain, but much more importantly, the portability of information assists in the reduction of making costly fuck-ups, like buying counterfeit purses.

This is something that has bothered me for a while now, as I work as a cashier in one. Personally I couldn't care less about the store selling these items, but when I have to ring someone up who's buying a fake bag or other item, all of a sudden it makes me a criminal. It makes any cashier doing so a criminal.

I have communicated with attorneys who specialize in intellectual property law and they have confirmed my suspicions that yes, I could be held responsible for selling these items. (Not likely, they admitted, but still possible.)

That doesn't sit well with me. I need my job, I can't quit or refuse to ring up certain items in the store. I really wish they'd do a sting operation at Goodwill and stop this practice once and for all.

I depend on our customers to tell us if the bags are fake or not since they are highly more knowledgeable on those subjects. Our pricers in the back do their best to weed out fakes but we can't always tell (not our area of expertise). If we learn it is fake, we take the item down and place another one in it's spot. Not a big deal.

Why is it morally the responsibility of a reseller such as Goodwill or Salvation Army to determine the authenticity of supposed designer goods? The law charges the designers, with the assistance of Federal authorities, with the responsibility of preventing counterfeit goods from getting on the market. If the designers fail to do their job, why should they expect resellers who simply take goods already purchased on the open market to do their enforcement for them? If Goodwill is affirmatively representing that the items are in fact the genuine article, then they are culpable. Otherwise, morally at least, a used handbag is a fucking used handbag.

If they learn this after they have bought it on good faith that what they purchased was authentic would you give them store credit or their money back for being out the money? I bought one tonight and thought it was real but when I took it to my friend who owns like 4 of them it became clear. But I'm out $46.00 on it and that stretched me as I resale to bring my mom home from the convalescent home and I have not had much work but I knew I could sell a LV for a very good return. Now, not so much. That's a tank and a half of gas.

The usual person named in anti-GoodWill smear memes is Mark Curran. As Snopes and others have pointed out, this person does not actually exist.

GoodWill is meanwhile operated and managed locally. The top salary paid to anyone at Goodwill of Greater Washington is $225K. The current President and CEO is Catherine Meloy, who is an actual person.

Many people underestimate the importance of handbags in their personal style. Personally, I think that handbags are really essential and I have read the best replica websites reviews by BeleneChandia.com to find fashionable handbags at an affordable price. This site usually helps me to buy good clothes

Many of these items end up at Goodwill legally.

When counterfeit goods are seized the rightful owners of the intellectual property in some countries get to determine what happens to them. If the owner wants the goods destroyed the owner is frequently tagged with the cost of having them destroyed. Since this cost is not minimal owners will sometimes opt for the alternative, which is to have the items donated to charity. In other countries seized counterfeit goods are automatically donated to charity by the government. While the owners of intellectual property may object to this practice it should be remembered that the owner is benefitting from the government keeping them out of normal business chains. Then there is the possibility the items were actually produced or purchased legally by the original owner under laws in place where and when the item was purchased. It happens.

Items purchased from Goodwill and similar stores are under most state laws sold caveat emptor, or buyer beware. Buyers of the items are charged with notice that the items they are purchasing may not be what they appear, or may be flawed in some way. Buyers are supposed to factor this into their decision on whether to purchase the items or how much to pay for it. If you bought something from Goodwill and it turned out to be a fake, then you are SOL. This is true whether you are buying the item for personal use or to stock your own shop for resale.
