Northern Virginia Training Center closing?

I wonder where all those retarded people will move to? If it true that the facility will be transfered to George Mason to be used as some sort of research facility?

Parents of disabled adults fighting center's closing
http://www.wusa9.com/news/article/267977/188/Parents-of-disabled-adults-fighting-centers-closing

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Some five thousand people have signed a petition to stop the closing of the Northern Virginia Training Center and other state centers that serve the developmentally disabled.

At the Training Center in Fairfax, several aging parents say the state is bullying them to move their children out with no good options.

Ken Gans is one of them. His 53-year-old son Jeffrey has been a resident at the Northern Virginia Training Center for 40 years.

Jeffrey can't speak. He developed no language skills after being born with several severe disabilities. Jeffrey has the mentality of a six month old baby. The training center's staff bathes him, feeds him and changes his diapers.

Jeffrey's family is fearful of where he will end up is the facility closes as planned in 2015.

Under an agreement with the Department of Justice, the state will close four of its five training centers. The only one left open will be either in Chesapeake or Lynchburg. Most residents are supposed to transition into group homes.

To place all 80 some Fairfax residents would take 25 new group homes, that don't exist now. There are hundreds of people in Northern Virginia and thousands across the state on waiting lists for group homes.

Ken Gans says he won't put Jeffrey in a group home.

"If there's one person on duty, these people can't speak. If he's abused in any kind of bad way, who's going to talk about it? How would you know? You won't," said Gans.

Fairfax County Supervisor John Cook says the county will keep a close watch on what happens.

"We need to make sure that the group homes here in Northern Virginia, specifically in Fairfax, are high quality, so that parents have a good choice, and what we don't want to see is a choice between substandard group home care and an institution out of the county. That would not be acceptable," said Cook.

Gans said, "The fact that his civil rights and his parents are being violated."

While Ken Gans, of McLean, will make the trip to visit his son, other elderly parents may not be able to.

The families hope they can convince Virginia lawmakers to keep the centers open to allow families more time to find adequate care for their loved ones.

I bet one of our local greedy land developers would love to sink their bulldozer blades into that piece of land. They would kick the retard kids out then tear those buildings down to make room for a Hampton inn and Applebees.

WFT, why is DoJ getting involved in this state issue?

Its a travesty that these helpless folks are being sent so far away from their families who could check up on them and make sure they aren't being abused. What a hardship for the families to have to travel to see their loved ones.

Completely agree with homeowner 388 and greedy developers. There aren't very many hotel choices around GMU for parents...

Ok, but how about you visit the kid and see for yourself to make sure things are on the up and up.

Been there - worked there for many years - abuse of residents is rampant - theft of their possessions is an everyday thing - the management protects the abusers and punishes the staff who report the abuse - it's a place full of incompetence mixed with equal parts of abuse and neglect - but the management sure does have nice cars and houses -

That would be a good spot for a cvs and a flower shop. The funeral home across the street would bring in plenty of floral sales. Maybe they can squeeze a hampton inn and a taco bell in there too.

You try making arrangements for a severely handicapped child for 60 or 70 years and see what you do.

QUESTIONS

1) is this private land leased to gov? if so i'm tired of this bullshit story: seize the land

2) obviously if you harmed the disabled those who took offense would get out of their chairs and take it out all of their obama frustrations on you

It's owned by the state so state agencies get first dibs.

It would be cheaper to house them in a minimum security prison. It only cost around $27.62 per prisoner per day. Lets face the facts, these unfortunate souls would not have a clue if they were living at Disney land or the slammer.

At the end of the day it is all the same no matter where they shack up- Feeding time.

NVTC is being closed because the old governor decided it was a bad idea to institutionalize mentally handicapped people. He may of been right but it has left a shortage of available beds in group homes across the state.

You took the above comments so personal you must have a special person in your life. Do they wheel around with a drool bucket and wear adult diapers?

What is your favorite part? Free 24/7 care or the free check each month?

Up until the late 1970s the state of Virginia used to sterlize those residents against their will.
Every now and then two of them reproduce and we get another ward of the state that has to be cared for.

The parents and all family members should have been subject to sterilization in the 70's as well. The genetic pool would have been cleaner.

Sound like someone has a mentally handicapped child and does not want to have a "available bed" in their own home. Do you fight for their rights (on facebook of course) but only visit them once a month when convenient for you?

No, the Feds sued Virginia, claiming we were "warehousing" our neediest, when they belonged in group homes. NVTC is closing as part of the settlement with the feds.

The Training center will close in about 6 months. Why does GMU automatically get that property?? That is some prime real estate owned by the commonwealth right there. We could really use a couple hotels and a CVS plus starbucks and Mcdonalds in that spot. A mattress store would be nice too.

The state already owns that land. One building is going to be renovated and used for a larger and better state police barracks. The other buildings are being assessed by GMU and the thought is that most of them will be torn down.

That is one seriously valuable piece of land right there. It probably makes sense to give it to GMU though as they can put it to good use. I say give the state police some of the land to expand their barracks then give the rest to GMU.

It was listed for sale outright; but offers were supposed to be in by 9/1. Wonder what happened. http://looplink.divaris.com/xNet/Looplink/Profile/Profile.aspx?stid=/broker/divaris&LID=19261453&LL=true&UOMListing=&UOMMoneyCurrency=&RentPer=PY&SRID=5832139414

GMU has enough land IMHO; it's turned the Braddock Corridor into a traffic nightmare when school is in session. Maybe GMU should use some of its currently unutilized land at Braddock/Shirley Gate if it wants to expand even more.

Yeah, its hard to believe but just 40 years ago the state of Virginia strapped people down on a operating table and cut into them to destroy their reproductive ability all against their will. If conservatives had their way they would love to do the same to gays, blacks and Muslims today.

That corridor is a shit show at 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM which has more to do with rush hour than school. It looks like they are going to expand the intersection along Route 123.

And the correct answer is ...
a DMV.

"Fair Oaks Mall DMV Moving

Also, the DMV plans to relocate its Fair Oaks Mall location to the former site of the Northern Virginia Training Center, on Braddock Road, in May 2017. “While we have not finalized the number of customer service windows, the new facility will be nearly twice the size of our current Fair Oaks Mall office,” Brubaker said. “The new location will allow us to give road tests, something that isn’t possible at the current Fair Oaks office.”

That is perfect. The main building can be retro-fitted and they already have a good sized parking lot there. That leaves 8 other buildings though, maybe the state police will take one of them.

Great!!!

I do like the "bus hub" idea...a bus is sorely needed that can go from new braddock road and 28 coming all the way down braddock (a straight shot) past GMU to that 495 interchange, give or take. That would alleviate a lot of the traffic on braddock! Those little buses would work to start out and gauge interest. Make these buses run 7 days a week though for more flexibility.

The county is renting single-family homes in quiet neighborhoods to house them in groups. Apparently they have an exemption from zoning laws restricting the number of unrelated people under one roof.

Just follow the Apollo transport vans to find them.

They really need to build that Hampton inn and a Olive Garden on that site.

On pages 34 and 35, it shows a proposed Park & Ride at the former site.

Bet these kids parents have a 3 car garage full of Maserati, Tesla and a nice little Alpha Romeo for commuting in; A brand new custom built McMansion with all the bells and whistles in the Hunt country (or at least the Vienna hills); a maid to clean up after them and the rest of their normal posh living kids on their automatic ticket into Harvard and Yale--yet they don't want to spend any of their opulent piles of money putting their disabled kid into a decent private institution. Looks like their karma is returning to be hitting them in the face at the most inopportune time.....time to suck up responsibility and pay for your kid's welfare instead of your personal self-aggrandizement...

I worked there in the 80s. One time someone came in the middle of the night and tied a severely handicapped child to a lamp-post and then hauled ass. The state police tried to find out who did it but they never had any luck. People do fucked up things.

It's awful that scofflaws would haul ass and break the speed limit. You're right, people do fucked up things.

They used to have bake sales there. I would buy some baked goods and then throw them away. Kids baking them were also picking their noses.

I emailed the DMV, asking about the Fair Oaks Mall location moving and then opening up on the former Northern Virginia Training Center site. They told me this:

***

Hello,

We are not yet sure on an opening date for the new location. As of right now, construction will not start until late 2018/ early 2019. We do not have all of the details yet but it would probably be at the earliest mid to late 2019.

Thank you for visiting www.dmvnow.com.

Up until 1977 the commonwealth of Virginia used to surgically sterilize the retarded people there against their will. They got tired of retards having retarded babies.
