Beginning this fall, students at Fairfax’s Mount Vernon High School will no longer be allowed to wear jeggings as pants.

But what exactly are jeggings? They are the fashion cousin of leggings, the skin-tight staples of high school hallways everywhere. Jeggings are leggings with a faux-denim appearance that provide kids with the tailored jean look that is in vogue among teenagers. In order to wear leggings or jeggings, students must wear them underneath shorts, dresses or skirts that are at most three inches above the knee.

At Mount Vernon, principal Nardos King has helped to implement a more stringent dresscode. Recently, the school released videos online to help students get a handle on what’s cool to wear at school and at homecoming and on prom night.

Compared to other high schools in the county, Mount Vernon students’ appearances are “noticeably different,” she said. King said that the dresscode helps students focus on what’s important in classrooms and keep the teenagers from being distracted by what their peers are wearing.

King said that Mount Vernon is perhaps the only school that explicitly defines the length of dresses, shorts and skirts permitted in the dresscode. King said that the so-called “three-inch rule” helps parents and teens pick out what is appropriate for school.

In a letter home to parents, King wrote that “A student who violates the dress code will not be allowed to attend class unless the violation is corrected.”

King said that proper attire is something that the Mount Vernon administration takes seriously. “Repeated violations will constitute defiance and will be subject to progressive discipline,” she wrote in the letter.

King said that some students complain that cheerleaders’ skirts and volleyball players’ shorts both break the three inch rule.

“Those are appropriate on the field and on the court but not in the classroom,” King said.

The rule concerning leggings as pants has sparked debate in other school districts. In Montgomery County, a Rockville High School student was forced to wear a baggy oversized t-shirt because she wore leggings and a sweater that broke the dresscode.

“We believe that attention to appearance and a student’s attitude toward self and school are related,” King wrote in the letter to parents. “Proper grooming and appropriateness of attire are a part of learning for all students

I'm so glad I have a teen boy. He wears the same shitty t-shirts and jeans every day. No massive clothing expense, no drama with dress codes.

At least the guy isn't named for the slang word for testicles.

Foreign I can forgive, but odd parents probably cursed this principal forever.

Nardos King is a total failure as a principal.

She needs to spend time and energy fixing the County-leading suspension rate among her charges and the abysmal achievement gap at that school.

Stop cruising the hallways with a ruler measuring the 3 inches above the knee and get into a classroom and teach something.

When is Dan Storch going to do something about obvious trainwreck?

Glad I went before all this PC crap got up and running. No one cared what the students wore as long as they were not high or drunk. Just an over reach by the school system.

For those who have no idea what jeggings are...they are a cross between jeans and leggings. They enhance the ass and show off a camel toe.

Well that pic of that chick is hot!!!! Ok, back to reality, we're going to see illegal immigrant pears, fat sistas, and redneck mommas wearing these jeggings!!!

If I was principal I would be banning these jeggings also. Who wants to see them wearing these?

They can't read or write, but they wear "approved" clothes-all on your tax dollar.

FCPS is in need of a SERIOUS reform.

I think the girls that have the right curves should be allowed to wear these. The fat chicks can stick to baggy pants.

If they ban "jeggings" what is to stop girls from simply wearing regular skin-tight jeans? Normal denim jeans can be as tight as jeggings and actually look painted on.

Wish all public high schools had dress codes, even if not uniforms. Wearing modest clothing helps adolescents focus on academics and helps maintain a respectful environment for teaching and learning.
