AT&T outage
Posted by: Take a Stand ()
Date: July 01, 2010 03:15PM

Starting earlier today, I was not able to receive calls on my at&t cell phone. The phone could place and use the data plan, but all inbound calls were going to voice mail.

AT&T reported a wider problem with their cell network affecting most of the Northern VA area.

anyone else having this ?

it seems to be worst during peak hours.

i was having the same problem, turn off your 3g on your phone, its because the 3g runs both data and voice calls on a different frequency. and since 3g is not working thats why your not receiving calls

The phone on my iPhone doesn't work worth shit most days. Data is usually fine. It's the price of living in an area with heavy cellphone use and a shitty network.

They are working on 5 AT&T towers. Big project. It will be ready by early 2011.

AT&T is seriously going to leave Verizon in the dust if the only thing Verizon has is 4G.

Also AT&T is 2X faster than Verizon's 3G network at the moment.

Becuase, you know, outages like this are completly acceptable and normal.

AT&T is ok, but the iPhone is shit for voice. Mine can't hold/find a signal worth a damn. It has been my experience with Verizon, however, that AT&T's data speeds are faster...

I've heard this too and a phone should be a phone first and everything else second. I love the iphone but ATT was a dealbreaker.

Just draw a circle from centerville that almost reaches Burke and you have your 3G outage.

AT&T sucks. I had them until a year and a half ago. I couldn't get a signal for shit inside my own house and half the time anywhere else, either. Add to that the deal with shitty Apple and their iPhanboy and you can have AT&T.

Apple/ATT excuse for the Iphone 4:

Apple has been in the habit of issuing very short press releases that simply and clearly address concerns of the public without much in the way of formalities. Today, in an unusually long and formal message, Apple says it has found the cause of the iPhone 4's poor reception when it is held in a "death grip."

According to the company, it's not a reception issue at all, but a problem with the way iPhones all the way back to the iPhone 3G have calculated signal strength.

In short, they've been exaggerating how many bars you have.

"We were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong," a note from the company said today. "Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."

"To fix this, we are adopting AT&T's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone's bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see," Apple said.

So in the next few weeks, the updated formula will be rolled out in a software update to the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4.

If believe this shit....they don't want recall the 1.5 million iphone 4 they claimn to have sold. But you can return it in 30 days...deduct the restocking fee.

I got laughed at when I told them the bars were inaccurate. I still like the phone though.

I noticed this when I got my 3G. I did hear about the yellow picture issue with the iPhone 4's

Also the new iOS 4.0 update, for 2G,3G&3GS installs incorrectly due to corruption of data. In that case you need to reset then re-install iOS 4.0 and it should fix the problem. You will recognize this problem when you can no longer surf the internet using the 3G network. You will also lose the ability to MMS. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE ON THE FORUMS WHO TRY TO ENTER IN AT&T INFO MANUALLY. That info will be lost every time you plug your phone into iTunes and you will need to re-enter it manually.

If you have a 3G let me know if you wan't multi- tasking + wallpaper.

3G runs perfectly fine with the multi-tasking+wallpaper additions. Steve Job's wasn't happy of the 3G performance with wallpaper which is why you won't get multi tasking and wallpaper on the 3G with the new iOS 4.0.
