Fairfax teen killed in hit-and-run on Interstate 66

A 17-year-old boy died on Interstate 66 in Fairfax Tuesday morning after a hit-and-run.

Drivers alerted police to a pedestrian walking on the shoulder of eastbound I-66 around 4:40 a.m., Virginia State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

As the troopers were headed to the area, callers told dispatch the person had been hit by a car, according to Geller.

Troopers found the victim at milemarker 57, near Va. 50.

Investigators said the teen was struck in the right lane but was found on the shoulder.

"The incident is being investigated as a suicide," Geller said.

Anyone who saw the teen walking on the interstate or witnessed him being struck is asked to call police at 703-803-0026.

One eastbound lane was closed until about 10 a.m. for the investigation.

No and not likely until the parents are notified, because he's a minor.

It would be terrible if it was a Woodson student. Quite a few from Woodson have died recently. Its giving the school attention in the wrong way. You got Nick Stuban who killed himself after being given a cruel punishment for bringing in fake marijuana. Jane Hwang died for crossing the street without looking. Bryan Glenn died in a park in the woods by himself (parents won't tell the public how he died). And around May some kid from Woodson with a learning disability kills himslef after his dad leaves for divorce.

Woodson is being known as a "death factory" around here now. Chris McCandless being the first one.

I wouldn't assume just because he was walking in the right lane it was suicide.

He could have been high or just disoriented.

Police Investigate Route 66 Accident as a Suicide
The 17-year-old victim was from Fairfax, Virginia State Police said.
http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/police-investigate-tuesday-accident-on-route-66-as-a-suicide

As Virginia State Police continue to piece together what led to Tuesday's pedestrian death on Route 66 near Route 50, officials said they are now investigating the death as a suicide.

Virginia State Police (VSP) first received a call around 4:41 a.m. Tuesday about a pedestrian walking on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-66 in Fairfax County.

Initial reports from police indicated the male victim was struck by a car in the right lane as officers were enroute to the scene; officers found the victim dead in the shoulder of the road, police said.

Around 10:54 a.m. Tuesday, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told Patch the accident is now being investigated as a suicide.

The victim has been identified as a 17-year-old boy from Fairfax, Geller said.

The accident snarled traffic for hours, and many commuters and Fairfax City residents have already called state police to help with the investigation, Geller said.

"State police expresses its appreciation to many motorists who called in this morning with information," Geller wrote.

State police have not located the vehicle involved in the accident.

Anyone with information should contact the Virginia State Police at 703-803-0026.

My daughter says that this was a troubled young man, having committed something serious enough to have seen jail time. He is then alleged to have run from home. From this, one may surmise that life was not easy, and that can be a deep hole from which to climb, particularly at that age, when one feels one is all alone in the world.

My heart goes out to his parents and the younger brother he leaves behind.

Yes, candlelight vigils are largely to help those left behind feel better, but what is wrong with that? Are you suggesting that it would be better for them all to sit in their rooms alone?

Aside from that, we are of course not yet certain of the whole reason for his death, so I will not jump to conclusions. There are several possibilities. It may be impossible to prove one way or another, especially if the driver does not come forward.

It really shouldn't matter what was going through his mind at the time, it is sad no matter what, and really, the details are not our business anyway.

It's less than 24 hours into the investigation, so just give it some time. He may have left a note, posted on a blog, or texted someone. Who knows at this point.

The details though do have relevance to us though and the public at large. Knowing what was going on can help others. Additionally, if it was a suicide, doing it in this way in particular had an impact -- albeit probably minor on thousands of people and in particular the driver of a vehicle. For all I know it was an 18 wheeler that had no idea what happened but suicide have impacts beyond just the person and their family. Look at the stories and impact on train drivers/operators of people that jump in front of them/lay on the tracks.

I'm very surprised that the Fairfax police suggested that it was suicide within a few hours. Is it possible that the teen was in a car on 66 with a friend or others and he left the vehicle either on his on or shoved out after an altercation and started walking, possible not in his right mind. Guess our police are too busy with other things, Dunkin Donuts and other heist, than doing a proper investigation. Reminds me of the Tommy Burkett case in 1991 from Chantilly Highlands. Sympathy to the family and friends.

Lgk12, I do understand, child made a couple of bad mistakes, he's a kid. Time for the judicial system, police to take note of how they are handling such cases. I too have teenagers/young adults...been there and done that. Time for reform of how we prosecute the teens. You back a child into a corner they will fold instead of carrying on with their lives. And no, with jail time he did not ruin his life, he did not have the support he needed, so very sad. I feel so very sorry for the family. Too many young lives lost in Fairfax, for what?

Senior Christian Bylund was fatally struck by a car on the side of Route 66 at around 4:45 a.m. on the morning of August 13. According to Virginia State Police, a pedestrian, now identified as Bylund, was walking along the shoulder of the highway before being hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The death is currently being investigated by police as a suicide.

Bylund participated in junior varsity lacrosse and wrestling as a Charger.

A candlelight vigil will be held on August 18 at 9:30 p.m. at Chantilly in memory of Christian.

Christian will be missed.

I do find it strange that they say he killed himself. He was found dead on the side of the road. He did not walk into the middle of the road. Where is the person who hit him? How did he get onto I-66?

It is also not common for the police to come right out and say a teen committed suicide for fear of others kids getting ideas to off themselves.

I knew him pretty well.
Im pretty sure something along the lines of this happened:

He commited a serious offense or was on drugs (which he did) or a mix of both. He then ran away from home and walked toward the highway. Hesitated on the right lane of 66 (police at this point were on route) then clipped the side of a trailer and was thrown into the emergency lane ~50ft away. From the pictures you can see 3 yellow blankets scattered covering him so I assume he was killed immediately. He was not bullied but didn't make good choices at school or out, he would skip and his grades weren't good. He was NOT depressed or at least didnt act like it and socialized a ton (to much according to our science teacher). Some recent event triggered this and I am 95% sure it was a suicide

This is the first time that someone I knew closely has died, I cannot stop thinking about it I wish someone on that road would have just stopped and pinned him on the ground police were only minutes away... Its sad he probably wasnt the best person to be hanging out with but I enjoyed being around him in class.

Yeah, apparently someone who actually goes to the school posted it in the online school newspaper. Really dumb thing to do, he should have waited for all the facts to come out or for the police to release the information first.

Don't get me wrong, understanding suicides (regardless of if this is one or not), is important. And yes, lots of people are affected. The only point I am making is that there are some people here who are ignorant or trolling and just insulting ways that people cope.

Just as a general statement about depression:
Better treatment and support is something we should always strive for. It is like a good teacher of mine once said "We strive for perfection knowing that we will never acheive it". We should always try to improve health care - mental, psychological and otherwise. It is terrible that preventable deaths happen, but it is a reminder of the importance of educating and supporting other people.

Everyone wants to play the blame game. Forget who announced his death first but to immediately described it as suicide, one would think that a lot of people reconized this child was in immediate danger to himself. It's too late for Chris and his family but there will be more. Whether he did commit suicide or put himself in harms way, without thinking of the consequences, no one will ever know.
When a child faces serious consequences from a misdeed, everyone should be on high alert, these are the kids that are most vulnerable. For the school, police and court systems, this should be a wakeup call...they don't call them kids for nothing. For the drivers that morning calling in for a stranger on the highway, good for you. Would have been much better if someone would have taken the time to stop and offered help or a ride, if he refused...just stayed with him. I too encountered this with my teenagers years ago, family fight and they take off, finding them wandering down FFX Pkwy, this was my greatest fear. My only hope as a society, that corporal punishment be abolished for our kids before another family/community has to face the consequences. As they say, It takes a village to raise a child. Only "We the people" can save our children.

Fastest reporting on an accident on I-66 in history.

Did he exit another car?

He did not shoot himself in the head. Thank god for that.

He was run over and they do not yet have the drivers ID who hit him.

Why the quick judgement?

Even if he texted a email that he wanted to kill himself maybe he was walking on I-66 to get help. Walking to Fairfax Hospital?

Confused?

A young man died whether it was by choice or not you should either sympathies for his family or shut the hell up. Don't comment these disgusting things on here. It doesn't matter if he was a good kid or not it matters that he had his whole life ahead of him and by mistake it was taken from him in an instant.so all these disturbing comments are not needed. Like i said i didn't really know him i just went to the same school but I'm so so sure that he will be truly missed by his friends and family. And candle light vigils may be stupid in SOME PEOPLES eyes, but sometimes it gives people hope and it shows love to the ones who truly need it. And i ask for you ass holes to show some fucking respect and stay off the comments. My heart goes out to his family and friend i am so sorry for your loss. I am so sick of seeing all these posts coming from people with inferiority complexes. A young man died, and that's the ONLY thing that matters. Any other posts about him "deserving" it or being "wormfood" are absolutely disgusting. I don't know where you get off making fun of a boy who felt so trapped by his predicament that he only saw one way out, but you need a fucking wake up call. This has nothing to do with prayer or God so I don't know why that has been repeatedly brought up, just let his family and friends have time to mourn the loss of someone they cared about. Honestly it's not asking much and if you want to be shown the same amount of respect when you lose someone you care about, then you may want to think twice before posting something offensive. Candlelight vigils may be "lame" in your eyes, but they are important for loved ones to find closure in such a horrific time, so how about you stop being a major dick and not worry about it. Is it affecting you in anyway? No, so shut the fuck up and find something else to spend your time doing.

Officials: Death of Fairfax Teen on Route 66 Was Suicide
Authorities say they still have not located the car and driver who hit the 17-year-old boy Tuesday.
http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/officials-death-of-fairfax-teen-on-route-66-was-suicide

Virginia State Police said late Wednesday that their investigation into the death of a 17-year-old Fairfax boy who was walking Tuesday along Route 66 in Fairfax and was killed by a car has been officially classified as a suicide.

Corinne Geller, spokeswoman for the state police, said an inter-agency investigation at the scene of Tuesday’s accident led to the conclusion.

“Through the course of the investigation and with the assistance of Fairfax County Police, the trooper was able to conclude suicide as the cause of [Tuesday's] incident,” Geller said.

Geller would not comment on specific findings that led to the suicide conclusion.

Geller said the one piece of the puzzle that remains missing is the car that struck the boy.

“We have not located the vehicle the young man collided with,” Geller told Patch.

The accident happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning, on Route 66 near Route 50 in the Fair Lakes area of Fairfax County.

Authorities received a call at 4:41 a.m. reporting a young man walking alongside the right lanes of Route 66.

While officers were en route to his location, they received a report that the boy had been struck by a passing vehicle. The vehicle that struck him left the scene.

The victim was later identified only as a 17-year-old Fairfax resident.

Traffic was snarled for hours, as the two right lanes of Route 66 were blocked until 10 a.m. as officials conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.

That is a serious shame, 17 is so young. He would have been over whatever in a year or so, no problem is this bad and young people should have more optimism.

The only thing that is the end of the world is the end of the world. Temporary problems are not solved by throwing it all away.

In my opinion this website is extremely repulsive. So many people just talking trash about one another, having no remorse or proof of the allegations being made. This site is filled with people who have nothing better to do than hurt other from behind a computer screen. Why this should be a website about helping others and passing information around a community not a war zone where people put other people on trial and say horrible things about people. This is no better than cyber bullying except the anonymous names prevent you form having to reveal who they are. This is like a middle school where people do nothing but start rumors about others to hurt peoples feelings.

I hope that you read this message and think, about your future activity and really only present information that is factual and helpful to others in the northern Virginia area. Put yourself in the person your about to hurt before you post your message.

I think the emphasis of this story has moved to an appropriate topic:

Is that car ok?
How is doing?
We must find this car...it could be hurt!

There are dozens of cameras pointed at the interstate systems around here. It'll be a matter of time until a make/model comes out. Or not...Who gives a shit?

The only thing that matters now is that kid is dead. And good thing he decided to off himself properly so no one has to pay any extreme healthcare costs anddrain the system.

No, it seems to have been a troubled young man who was at
odds with both himself and society, having had at least one
and maybe more run ins with the law and was in the habit
of making bad choices. Odds are that he was a heartbreak to
his family and caused unneeded problems and drama there.
He was on a path to self destruction. So he took one option
and offed himself. OK, that's a choice, too.

But why the fuck did he have to do it in such a way as to
negatively impact tens if not hundreds of thousands of others?
He made bad choices and got himself into a bad place in life.
So he loses any compassion. Compound it by making a public
spectacle of his own death. That just confirms he was an
asshole to the end. If his family and friends loved him so
much, why weren't they there for him? He was left to walk
along the highway at rush hour?

Even his schoolmates seem to recognize that he was trouble,
characterizing him as "a dick". Now his family can get on
TV and say "He was a good boy who just took up with a bad
crowd", or "He liked to make people laugh".

Odds are that within five years he would have been dead from
drug abuse or we'd be reading about him as part of the next
heroin ring in FFX.

Darwin took him out, that's all. The circle of life.
