FC Police, Job Question
Posted by: Arthur ()
Date: March 08, 2006 09:14PM

I was wondering if anyone knew how competitive the Fairfax County Police is? I'm looking to become a police officer and I want to know how hard it is to get into their department. I looked into other places too, but FCPD looks to be one of the nicer ones. Any help would be nice.

Arthur-

You have no idea what you are in for on this board. Wait until the nuts start crawling out of the woodwork. Lord.

Oh, alright. Well haters need not apply. But I am also looking into the police of Arlington, Alexandria, and Prince William (maybe even DC or Baltimore)...if anyone would rather comment on those instead that's fine. It's just that I live in Fairfax County, so I'm looking into them first. Thanks.

There one of the hardest Departments to get into from what I've heard. My cousin applied with them twice and got denied and he's a Marine. He works as Police Officer in the town of Vienna.

They are balls hard to get into, a full thorough background check, polygraphs, physical requirements to meet, written tests, etc. They don't let just any random fuck in.

try the Ffx sheriff's department, they are a little less stringent.

You have to know people to get hired by FFX county. I have a friend who applied with FFX County who was in the Marines for 7 years, a college degree, never done a drug in his life or got into trouble, and he was disqualified. Get to know people in the department before you apply. Very hard department to get into.

Go ahead and apply. It is a good depertment. But if you really want to make the money and have a good retirement go to FFX Fire Department. Everyone loves firemen, even the guys who cut the checks. But when you apply have your ducks in a row. when they give you a form to fill out, make a copy and fill that our first. Then copy over the info into the one you are going to turn in. Neat counts. Dress for interviews. Be honest. One lie and you are out. However, if you did something wrong in your wild wonderful youth, just tell them about it. As long as it wasn't a pattern, you will still be considered. Be ready to wait. It takes 4 to 6 months to process, maybe longer. Applicant investigaors are SLOW. Apply to a couple of departments. If they like you, they may speed your app up and tell you to drop the others. Or one of the others may do the same. Good Luck.

I'd recommend becoming a vigilante in the county.

Just go out and catch criminals and solve crimes on your own. If you beat the police to it often enough, they're bound to realize you would be invaluable to them and OFFER you a job.

Make sure you carry the right firepower, and all the other police essentials like a taser and a knightstick. Make sure to use them often.

You'll need a mystery solving license however.

Echoing what others have posted I have heard it is extremely hard to get in. I know a guy who planned to move to New York City to be a cop there just to build up his resume to apply in Fairfax County... from what he told me that isn't an unusual way to go.

RESton and someguy are killing me. The only positive is that the Fairfax County budget proposal includes about 40 added positions for the police department, so at least you know they're going to be hiring.

see, he blew it with getting a college degree because being an inexperienced fucking retard with a superiority complex seems to be one of those unsaid requirements. :)

You need to be black, Hispanic and/or female. If you are a white man in your 20s, tough shit. Apply in Farquier where they hate black and Hispanic people.

My grandfather once told me that if could do it all over again, he would be a cop, if for no reason other than the stories he'd get out of it. I tell you, after four years on the street and after experiencing a multitude of rediculous retail and paperpushing jobs to compare it to, it would take alot to get me to quit. There's the flexible work hours, good benefits, interesting training, vast numbers of options for advancement and of course, the old cliché "helping people"thing. Then there's that whole brotherhood thing, the working outdoors bit, the possibility of excitment everyday, and just the shear diversity of the job itself. You never know if one day you're coming into work and will end up catching a homicide suspect, if you'll do nothing all day, or if you'll be shot by some maniac who believes anarchy is the only option.

Other than that last part (and of course the cop-haters and doughnut jokes) what is there to dislike about the job?

I think that "brotherhood" thing is part of the problem. If Serpico taught me anything, ratting on your fellow officers gets you killed. It may not be that bad in real life, but I'm sure there's plenty of turning a blind eye and stonewalling investigations into officer misconduct.

OK, I haven't seen Serpico, but I think something bad happening to him for turning on his fellow officers is the gist.

i agree VERY much. i mean, the whole complete deniability bit is intrinsically evil. you dont see sysadmins banding together and swear that production never went down. it's fucking evil i tell you, evil.

High rates of alcoholism, spousal abuse, divorce, depression, and suicide factor into your decision? How about thankless stress and lack of judicial and public support? I imagine it could get a good man so unbalanced that he might want to shoot the next kid who dines and dashes at the local IHOP, if only given some type of excuse... I forgot that the moonlight security gig is not an option due to shitty pay, somewhere along the line of an 8th grade shop teacher.

Go Border Patrol and at least score some bread and benefits while losing the battle. They'll be hiring...

"Other than that last part (and of course the cop-haters and doughnut jokes) what is there to dislike about the job?"

- Shitty pay
- Getting stuck with needles
- Cuffing stinky-ass whores and vagrants
- Stress
- A thankless society
- Getting shot at
- Going to the same house over and over again and watching the same kids/wives getting smacked around by the same assholes
- Having to hang around with other cops

Need I say more?

Yup Yup hahahah, except for the one cop who pulled my friend over and bragged to us about having a degree from Penn State..when we asked what in, he refused to tell us, and we proceeded to question the need for a college degree to write traffic tickets

u are an idiot, how are background checks and a polygraph not related to integrity??? A polygraph is a lie detector test, truthfulness is INTEGRITY! The background investigation is to make sure you are of good CHARACTER and have ethicial standards! You people need to loose this hatred for cops, its retarted!

Don't forget the ol' "check on the elderly neighbor that hasn't been seen in a while." The concerned neighbor also stated that the hallway smelled like trash for the last two weeks.

*shit. I went to the wrong police post. whatever.
