There is truth in that. I have to travel for work and the rest of the country is not so well off. The Rust Belt is a disaster, no jobs at all and everyone on some time of entitlement.

4 categories

1. Military. Housing costs are supplemented so that they can afford to pay 2800 bucks for a 50 year old 4 bdrm house on 1/4 acre. Some here long term many just 2-4 years. Due to housing subsidy they actually can live on one salary and often actually raise their own children

2. Highly compensated professionals; also able to pay 2800 bucks a month for housing but usually want more upscale so both parents have to work full time. These extend themselves and let strangers raise their kids through after school care provided by the county. They drive nice cars to feel better about never really being at home.

3. Barely getting by. These folk either have average paying jobs and their kids are raised by strangers (see above) or they have one parent working getting great pay while the other raises their kids. Although they make 6 figure household income these people can barely afford to pay the high cost of housing, drive crappy cars, go on short crappy vacations but they actually know their offspring.

4. Illegal and new immigrants. These people work their asses off, live in group homes, drive death-trap junkers and never leave home for vacation. The group houses they live in are a blight on any neighborhood. Some speak English many do not. Some are able to cope with the back-breaking labor and impossibly high cost of living and some turn to drinking, crime or both.

All share a common trait of being overwhelmed by the demands of living in an area with such high costs.*

*1%'ers of course do what ever they want and feel no stress other than certain drama at the country club or garden club. The find the notion of being stressed about money to be the fault of anyone not lucky or born into vast wealth. 'Work harder' is the solution in their minds though few if any would survive a year outside of their bubble.

We do have good schools - enjoy :)

Only a burger-flipping, WalMart greeting, pizza delivering, floor mopping, high school-educated loser who could never dream of being in a country club would write this. You have to get educated and work hard at a well-paying job so that you can maybe have some diversion on the weekend. You just sound jealous.

Average FFX CO resident is an overly entitled helicopter parent. They want all sorts of extras in the schools, such as multimillion dollar playing fields and paid band trips to the Rose Parade.

They want all of this paid for by tax money. They don't care if the kids learn anything or not, the parents are reliving their miserable childhoods.

The politicians are wasteful, supporting not only silly things like the artificial turf but also a ridiculous streetcar leading right into the Culmore barrio.

The police operate without oversight. Civilians have been shot to death, and police officers have killed teachers (reckless driving), been spies for terrorists, committed nonconsensual sodomy, and falsified their time records.

Stalin's Russia populated by dopey yuppies-that's Fairfax.

Of course. Not a country club member myself, I find golf to be rather pointless. But if that's what floats your boat, go for it. Spending the afternoon doing yard work - another activity of your average Fairfax County resident.

That’s very interesting observation . Fairfax county is the only place in USA I lived in since I moved from another country. I would say, the folks here are not that simple. Yet, I managed to find good friends and meet nice people. Pardon my naivety, but I always thought that Fairfax County residents aren’t that different from average Americans. …I guess, I have nothing to compare the mentality of Fairfax people with.

forgot to mention...We are so called "barely getting by" family, with my husband making six figures income and me mostly raising the kids(working and attending the school in between). And I do not give a crap what other people think of us or how do they view us. As long as we can afford staying in the area with a good public school, pay for sport and music classes for our kids, and live in a nice by my own standards neighborhood, I am OK to drive a sorta inexpensive car and to not to go on a luxury vacation.

Could someone please wrap some numbers around the barely getting by category? I'm trying to figure out if we fall in it. Dual income, 4 bdr house, 1/4 acre, $2800 per month, 06 Honda and 08 Ford. I think those are considered crappy cars around here. What would our household income need to be in order to exit the barely getting by category and move into the highly compensated category? Or can we not get there by virtue of our crappy cars? Either way, we're still paying someone else to raise our kids.

Edit: our last vacation was to Disney World, stayed on the resort, if that helps. It was short (a week) but I don't think it'd be considered crappy. Probably still doesn't get us out of the barely getting by category.

Sonny,

We need more info in order to judge you on the Fairfax socioeconomic scale. Do you have a 401K with over 100K in it? Do you have any 529's for your kids? What are your future vacation plans? Do you have credit card debt? Are you making monthly payments on your cars? Do you buy your kids' school supplies through the PTSA or do you stand in the lines at Staples? Do you use coupons at the grocery store? Which grocery store do you use? Do you have a maid service at your house? Do you use the SACC program (and pay full freight)? Do your kids go to summer camps? Which camps?

why moving from the "barely getting by" category to a highest level is so much important to you? A so-called barely getting by" community in Fairfax mostly consists of programmers, engineers, accountants, or mid level health professionals...many of those folks are immigrants, but not all. Most my neighbors are Americans, some are really wealthy...and they are OK to share the neighborhood with us "a barely getting bys".Then, people of the highly compensated category are mostly lawyers, doctors, executives, politicians or owners of successful business. If you are none of the above, how can you get to a privileged category of highly compensated.

Forgot---do your kids have their own cell phones? Do you have full cable? Do you have high spend internet? How old is your furniture? Do you have granite countertops and stainless steel appliances?

If you don't have all these things, you're definitely struggling.

I didn't see a category between barely getting by and highly compensated. I thought it was one or the other.

I feel happy and fortunate to live here. Lots of history, great parks and trails, arts, dining, awesome shopping and a thriving farmers market and local food community.

The tone of this thread is so sad. Please don't judge the character of FFX county or surrounding areas by the cynics that monopolize this website.

You first should start with browsing the school for your kids. Cost of housing is tighten to the school rates. The better the school, the expensive the houses near by. The mortgage pay is your primary expense. Then add local Taxes, cost of food(2000$ if you shop in Weigmans),cost of kids camps and classes, cost of gasoline, cost of utilities...and on and on.Common, make a math...it's so easy. And good luck! You'd love this county for sure!

Living in a rented room in a house with 8 other people or still with their parents, working a $10/hour part time job @ the local restaurant/coffee shop after earning a bachelors degree at JMU/GMU/VCU in underwater basket weaving or some non-STEM BS (or simply flunked out), wasting their parent's money. Driving a POS car from the 90's in 2018 or still catching the bus/begging for rides.

They stay posting about niggers/chinks/sand niggers/ spics on FfxU all day since they are mad their black/asian/middle eastern/hispanic neighbors go to work everyday and drive a nicer car then they do and they see them go on vacations and bringing in bags from trendy stores too and they are mad their mom is yelling at them to go cut the grass and take out the trash but they won't even do THAT. Their room is a pigsty they sleep on the bare mattress no sheets and won't wash their ass. Then wonder why a real girl doesn't want to date them.

Trader Joe's parking lots suck everywhere, not just Fairfax County. And backing into (not "in to") spaces is considered safer than heading in. The "driving poorly" I'll buy.

When you're at home and life is getting so hungry,
There's a meat you know,
Ground round.

You're in a hurry, but there's no need to scurry
It will help to know
Ground round.

Just mix it with some mac and cheese and you will look so witty
Add some Campbell's beef stock and your eatin' really nifty
"How can you lose?"

There is no way you can err.
Some of the recipes double, and go in the fridge, cook slow

Cook brown
All meals taste great for sure
Ground round.
Use any place that your
Ground's sound
Won't taste like leather of shoe

Just use some ground, recipe books abound, it's true
I've got all that prose
Writ down.

Simmer it slow
They won't make faces and so you
Know they won't yell gross
No frowns

Just put some meatloaf in a pan and heat it super-nova
Then enhance it with some brew, just don't get a hang-ovah
Bin-ging again

Delight in the better fare,
You can always use some truffles, it will add some flair, e'en tho

Ground round
You can use some egg white
Ground round
Make it an eye delight
Ground round
Welcome and eat the chow now.

And you may find a cookbook on the shelf to guide and help you,
Someone who cooks just like you and you can use their menu,
Meals for a song.

So then we can have a square
We can put meat with our noodles, forget all those airs
you know.

Ground round
Instant meal waiting for
Some brown
"Don't wait a minute more"
Chomp down
There's tacos waiting for you,
All brown
It will be great with your
Add ons
Then you can get some more
Wolf down
"Everything's waiting for you."

Sounds like me, except the modest home is $800k, I drive an SUV but have two other cars, and I vacation in shithole states.

As the revival of this thread has quickly shown, the typical Fairfax County resident who posts at FFXU is a worthless, lying, bottom-of-the-barrel dickhead.

If I pull in front of you, and you were speeding, DO NOT ENGAGE ME IN ROAD RAGE!
let it go.
I was in Del Ray Alexandria, AND CARS ARE ALLOWED TO PARK WAAAAYYYYYY TOOOOOO CLOSE to the stop sign intersections!
Add to this that the driver is going 10-15 OVER the posted speed limit of 25!
I hate Del Ray bc of how narrow the streets are !

Everyone knows living in Fairfax totally sucks, but somehow it's always justified by saying "but the schools are great."

How the fuck are the schools great when English isn't the main language anymore and it's all spics, muslums, and transplants from NY/NJ?
